[less ▲]

Coding and non-coding RNAs have diagnostic and prognostic importance in Parkinson’s diseases (PD). We studied circulating small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) in 7, 003 samples from two longitudinal PD cohorts (Parkinson’s Progression Marker Initiative (PPMI) and Luxembourg Parkinson’s Study (NCER-PD)) and modelled their influence on the transcriptome. First, we sequenced sncRNAs in 5, 450 blood samples of 1, 614 individuals in PPMI. The majority of 323 billion reads (59 million reads per sample) mapped to miRNAs. Other covered RNA classes include piRNAs, rRNAs, snoRNAs, tRNAs, scaRNAs, and snRNAs. De-regulated miRNAs were associated with the disease and disease progression and occur in two distinct waves in the third and seventh decade of live. Originating mostly from a characteristic set of immune cells they resemble a systemic inflammation response and mitochondrial dysfunction, two hallmarks of PD. By profiling 1, 553 samples from 1, 024 individuals in the NCER-PD cohort using an independent technology, we validate relevant findings from the sequencing study. Finally, network analysis of sncRNAs and transcriptome sequencing of the original cohort identified regulatory modules emerging in progressing PD patients.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest. We define a model of international trade with two countries, two vertically differentiated goods, and heterogenous consumers concerning their willingness to pay for quality. Trade generates two sources of pollution: the production of domestic and traded goods, and their transportation between countries. Consumers in both countries manifest home bias which translates into ethnocentric preferences: (i) consumer perceive the quality of the domestic good amplified; and (ii) consumers thrive additional satisfaction when consuming a domestic good rather than a foreign one since only the former can satisfy their sense of place. By contrast, they suffer a psychological penalty when consuming a foreign product. We investigate the role of trade costs and ethnocentric attitude in shaping the equilibrium configuration of the international duopoly. Finally, we uncover the environmental damage from production and from transport in presence of ethnocentrism. [less ▲]

BACKGROUND: After the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of coronavirus disease to be a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020, the first SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected in Luxembourg on February 29, 2020. Representative population-based data, including asymptomatic individuals for assessing the viral spread and immune response were, however, lacking worldwide. METHODS: Using a panel-based method, we implemented a representative sample of the Luxembourgish population based on age, gender and residency for testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection and antibody status in order to define prevalence irrespective of clinical symptoms. Participants were contacted via email to fill an online questionnaire before biosampling at local laboratories. All participants provided information related to clinical symptoms, epidemiology, socioeconomic and psychological assessments and underwent biosampling, rRT-PCR testing and serology for SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: We included a total of 1862 individuals in our representative sample of the general Luxembourgish population. Of these, 5 individuals had a current positive result for infection with SARS-CoV-2 based on rRT-PCR. Four of these individuals were oligosymptomatic and one was asymptomatic. Overall we found a positive IgG antibody status in 35 individuals (1.97%), of which 11 reported to be tested positive by rRT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 previously and showed in addition their IgG positive status also a positive status for IgA. Our data indicate a prevalence of 0.3% for active SARS-CoV-2 infection and an infection rate of 2.15% in the Luxembourgish population between 18 and 79 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: Luxembourgish residents show a low rate of acute infections after 7 weeks of confinement and present with an antibody profile indicative of a more recent immune response to SARS-CoV-2. All infected individuals were oligo- or asymptomatic. Bi-weekly follow-up visits over the next 2 months will inform about the viral spread by a- and oligosymptomatic carriers and the individual changes in the immune profile.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest.Clinical TrialNCT04379297Funding StatementThe CON-VINCE Study is funded by the Research Fund Luxembourg (FNR; CON-VINCE) and the André Losch Foundation (Luxembourg).Author DeclarationsAll relevant ethical guidelines have been followed; any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained and details of the IRB/oversight body are included in the manuscript.YesAll necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms have been archived.YesI understand that all clinical trials and any other prospective interventional studies must be registered with an ICMJE-approved registry, such as ClinicalTrials.gov. Contact tracing is an important instrument for national health services to fight epidemics. As part of the COVID-19 situation, many proposals have been made for scaling up contract tracing capacities with the help of smartphone applications, an important but highly critical endeavor due to the privacy risks involved in such solutions. Extending our previously expressed concern, we clearly articulate in this article, the functional and non-functional requirements that any solution has to meet, when striving to serve, not mere collections of individuals, but the whole of a nation, as required in face of such potentially dangerous epidemics. We present a critical information infrastructure, PriLock, a fully-open preliminary architecture proposal and design draft for privacy preserving contact tracing, which we believe can be constructed in a way to fulfill the former requirements. Our architecture leverages the existing regulated mobile communication infrastructure and builds upon the concept of "checks and balances", requiring a majority of independent players to agree to effect any operation on it, thus preventing abuse of the highly sensitive information that must be collected and processed for efficient contact tracing. This is enforced with a largely decentralised layout and highly resilient state-of-the-art technology, which we explain in the paper, finishing by giving a security, dependability and resilience analysis, showing how it meets the defined requirements, even while the infrastructure is under attack. Moments of crisis like the current one sparked by Covid-19, engage social, economic, cultural and political institutions of a society and stress-test their resourcefulness, while individual and collective food supplies become primary concerns. Where does even the wealthiest of EU member States stand when it comes to food sovereignty and specific vulnerabilities, what needs to change and which food policies are needed to facilitate a sustainable food system – both locally and internationally? Combining qualitative, empirical research methods to textual and statistical analysis, as well as transformative research, I focus on key areas of Luxembourg’s food system presenting challenges – specific ones and structural ones intertwined with issues in other countries – and discuss current and planned pathways of optimisation. I will start out with an analysis of agricultural and commercial specificities of a food system with low self-sufficiency rates, linked to meat and dairy specialisations, but also to market accessibility and market structure issues, leading to heavy imports. I will then shed light on pathways currently put into practice by the State, by economic actors, by educational actors and by social movements and coalitions of the willing, advocating ecological, ethical and qualitative production methods. Finally, I will show how the first Food Policy Council at national level that Luxembourg is currently founding is favoring a deliberate shift towards a multi-stakeholder-lead effective food policy. Today, leveraging the enormous modular power, diversity and flexibility of manycore systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) requires careful orchestration of complex resources, a task left to low-level software, e.g. hypervisors. In current architectures, this software forms a single point of failure and worthwhile target for attacks: once compromised, adversaries gain access to all information and full control over the platform and the environment it controls. This paper proposes Midir, an enhanced manycore architecture, effecting a paradigm shift from SoCs to distributed SoCs. Midir changes the way platform resources are controlled, by retrofitting tile-based fault containment through well known mechanisms, while securing low-overhead quorum-based consensus on all critical operations, in particular privilege management and, thus, management of containment domains. Allowing versatile redundancy management, Midir promotes resilience for all software levels, including at low level. We explain this architecture, its associated algorithms and hardware mechanisms and show, for the example of a Byzantine fault tolerant microhypervisor, that it outperforms the highly efficient MinBFT by one order of magnitude. In the frame of the BMC-EU project (Basic motor competencies in Europe), a teacher training toolkit consisting of a teacher training concept with an accompanying user manual (BMC-EU intellectual output 4) was developed in order to support the implementation of the modular support toolkit on the basis of the concept of basic motor competences (BMC-EU intellectual output 3; Scheuer & Heck, 2020). The aim of this support toolkit is to be implemented mainly at the level of regular physical education lessons to initiate adaptations regarding the content and methods in physical education instruction. The teacher training toolkit contains materials to implement teacher trainings structured in a theoretical and a practical part. In a first step, teachers are familiarized with the MOBAK concept, measurement, test procedure, data procession and evaluation as well as with the interpretation of test results. In a second part, they learn how to get from the diagnosis of the students’ basic motor competencies and the strengths and weaknesses identified in the assessment to concrete interventions by using the MOBAK support framework and the accompanying supportive handouts in form of a modular support toolkit, ready to be implemented in concrete educational situations to support students with additional needs in basic motor competencies. As the teacher training toolkit aims to support and facilitate the implementation of the Modular support toolkit for teachers (Scheuer & Heck, 2020) based on the MOBAK concept and measurement (Herrmann, 2018), reference to the support toolkit and the MOBAK Test manual is given throughout this document [less ▲]

Patient-derived cancer models are essential tools for studying tumor biology and preclinical interventions. Here, we show that glioma patient-derived orthotopic xenografts (PDOXs) enable long-term propagation of patient tumors and represent clinically relevant patient avatars. We created a large collection of PDOXs from primary and recurrent gliomas with and without mutations in IDH1, which retained histopathological, genetic, epigenetic and transcriptomic features of patient tumors with no mouse-specific clonal evolution. Longitudinal PDOX models recapitulate the limited genetic evolution of gliomas observed in patient tumors following treatment. PDOX-derived standardized tumor organoid cultures enabled assessment of drug responses, which were validated in mice. PDOXs showed clinically relevant responses to Temozolomide and to targeted treatments such as EGFR and CDK4/6 inhibitors in (epi)genetically defined groups, according to MGMT promoter and EGFR/CDK status respectively. Dianhydrogalactitol, a bifunctional alkylating agent, showed promising potential against glioblastoma. Our study underlines the clinical relevance of glioma PDOX models for translational research and personalized treatment studies. [less ▲]

In the frame of the BMC-EU project (Basic motor competencies in Europe), a support framework and a modular support toolkit on the basis of the concept of basic motor competences and the results of the data collection in phase 1 of the project was developed as part of intellectual output 3. The aim of this toolkit is to be implemented mainly at the level of regular physical education lessons to initiate adaptations regarding the content and methods in physical education instruction. In a first step, the support framework was developed for getting from the diagnosis of the students’ basic motor competencies and the strengths and weaknesses identified in the assessment to concrete interventions. Based on this framework, supportive handouts in form of a modular support toolkit were developed, ready to be implemented in concrete educational situations to support students with additional needs in basic motor competencies. The modular support toolkit includes guidelines for the interpretation of MOBAK (Motorische Basiskompetenzen; German for basic motor competencies) test results, the MOBAK support framework, a glossary, as well as the modular support toolkit with materials for physical education teachers in the form of MOBAK task description cards and MOBAK activity cards based on principles of variation and on a competence-oriented approach. Bitcoin is the oldest and most widely established cryptocurrency network with the highest market capitalization among all cryptocurrencies. Although bitcoin (with lowercase b) is increasingly viewed as a digital asset belonging to a new asset class, the Bitcoin network (with uppercase B) is a decentralized financial market infrastructure (dFMI) that clears and settles transactions in its native asset without relying on the conventional financial market infrastructures (FMIs). To be a reliable asset class as well as a dFMI, however, Bitcoin needs to have robust governance arrangements; whether such arrangements are built into the protocol (i.e., on-chain governance mechanisms) or relegated to the participants in the Bitcoin network (i.e., off-chain governance mechanisms), or are composed of a combination of both mechanisms (i.e., a hybrid form of governance). This paper studies Bitcoin governance with a focus on its alleged shortcomings. In so doing, after defining Bitcoin governance and its objectives, the paper puts forward an idiosyncratic governance model whose main objective is to preserve and maximize the main value proposition of Bitcoin, i.e., its censorship-resistant property, which allows participants to transact in an environment with minimum social trust. Therefore, Bitcoin governance, including the processes through which Bitcoin governance crises have been resolved and the standards against which the Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) are examined, should be analyzed in light of the prevailing narrative of Bitcoin as a censorship-resistant store of value and payment infrastructure. Within such a special governance model, this paper seeks to identify the potential shortcomings in Bitcoin governance by reference to the major governance crises that posed serious threats to Bitcoin in the last decade. It concludes that the existing governance arrangements in the Bitcoin network have been largely successful in dealing with Bitcoin’s major crises that would have otherwise become existential threats to the Bitcoin network. As cities grow and spatially expand, agricultural land is converted into residential land. In many developing countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, this process is accompanied by a change in land tenure, whereby plots held under traditional customary arrangements are sold to new urban residents, possibly with formal property rights. This paper studies joint land-use and land-tenure conversion in an urban economics model in which intermediaries purchase agricultural land from customary owners and attempt to transform it into residential plots with statutory property rights. The spatial equilibrium includes a mix of land uses and rights where statutory and non-statutory residential plots coexist with customary land that is mainly used for agriculture. Because customary ownership is subject to uncertainty (because of tenure insecurity), the conversion process includes a potential information asymmetry between customary owners and intermediaries. The analysis shows that a market failure may emerge whereby some customary owners prefer to continue farming their land rather than participate in the urban residential land market, which results in a city that is too small. Empirical analysis using Malian data validates the key features of the model captured by land price gradients, as well as the ranking and the variance of land prices, and is suggestive of the presence of information asymmetry. We investigate the terms arising in an identity for hyperbolic surfaces proved by Luo and Tan, namely showing that they vary monotonically in terms of lengths and that they verify certain convexity properties. Using these properties, we deduce two results. As a first application, we show how to deduce a theorem of Thurston which states, in particular for closed hyperbolic surfaces, that if a simple length spectrum "dominates" another, then in fact the two surfaces are isometric. As a second application, we show how to find upper bounds on the number of pairs of pants of bounded length that only depend on the boundary length and the topology of the surface. [less ▲]

We approach the study of totally real immersions of smooth manifolds into holomorphic Riemannian space forms of constant sectional curvature -1. We introduce a notion of first and second fundamental form, we prove that they satisfy a similar version of the classic Gauss-Codazzi equations, and conversely that solutions of Gauss-Codazzi equations are immersion data of some equivariant map. This study has some interesting geometric consequences: 1) it provides a formalism to study immersions of surfaces into SL(2,C) and into the space of geodesics of H^3; 2) it generalizes the classical theory of immersions into non-zero curvature space forms, leading to a model for the transitioning of hypersurfaces among H^n, AdS^n, dS^n and S^n; 3) we prove that a holomorphic family of immersion data corresponds to a holomorphic family of immersions, providing an effective way to construct holomorphic maps into the SO(n,C)-character variety. In particular we will point out a simpler proof of the holomorphicity of the complex landslide; 4) we see how, under certain hypothesis, complex metrics on a surface (i.e. complex bilinear forms of its complexified tangent bundle) of constant curvature -1 correspond to pairs of projective surfaces with the same holonomy. Applying Bers Double Uniformization Theorem to this construction we prove a Uniformization Theorem for complex metrics on a surface. [less ▲]

We consider a symmetric matrix-valued Gaussian process $Y^{(n)}=(Y^{(n)}(t);t\ge0)$ and its empirical spectral measure process $\mu^{(n)}=(\mu_{t}^{(n)};t\ge0)$. Under some mild conditions on the covariance function of $Y^{(n)}$, we find an explicit expression for the limit distribution of $$Z_F^{(n)} := \left( \big(Z_{f_1}^{(n)}(t),\ldots,Z_{f_r}^{(n)}(t)\big) ; t\ge0\right),$$ where $F=(f_1,\dots, f_r)$, for $r\ge 1$, with each component belonging to a large class of test functions, and $$ Z_{f}^{(n)}(t) := n\int_{\R}f(x)\mu_{t}^{(n)}(\ud x)-n\E\left[\int_{\R}f(x)\mu_{t}^{(n)}(\ud x)\right].$$ More precisely, we establish the stable convergence of $Z_F^{(n)}$ and determine its limiting distribution. An upper bound for the total variation distance of the law of $Z_{f}^{(n)}(t)$ to its limiting distribution, for a test function $f$ and $t\geq0$ fixed, is also given. [less ▲]

This paper introduces tasks into the neoclassical production sector. Competitive firms choose the profit-maximizing amounts of factor-specific tasks that determine their factor demands and output supplies. We show that the effect of factor-augmenting technical change on relative and absolute factor prices can be decomposed into a productivity effect and a task-demand effect of opposite sign. These effects appear since the novel task-based approach distinguishes between the demands for tasks and the demands for factors. This perspective provides a new intuition for the emergence of relative and absolute factor biases and the role of the elasticity of substitution. [less ▲]

This paper studies the provision of urban green areas in cities when residents havepreferences for the size of and access to those areas. At the optimum, the number ofurban green spaces is a non-monotone function of distance to the city centre, whilethe sizes and distances to other urban green areas increase as one moves to the urbanfringe. This paper empirically investigates those properties for the 300 largest Europeancities by using the GMES Urban Atlas database (European Environmental Agency). The empirical analysis confirms the non-monotone relationship between the numberof urban green spaces and the distance to the city centre. The distance between twoparks also increases as one moves toward the urban fringe. Finally, richer cities areassociated with a denser network of urban green areas. [less ▲]

We show that declining hours of work per worker in conjunction with a growing work force may give rise to growth cycles. This is accomplished in an overlapping generations model where individuals are endowed with Boppart-Krusell preferences (Boppart and Krusell (2020)), i. e., the wage elasticity of their supply of hours worked is negative. On the supply side, economic growth is due to the expansion of consumption-good varieties through endogenous research. We show that a sufficiently negative equilibrium elasticity of the individual supply of hours worked to an expansion in the set of consumption-good varieties opens up the possibility of growth cycles where the economy fluctuates between two regimes, one with and the other without an active research sector. We identify period-2 and period-3 cycles, conclude with Li and Yorke (1975) that cycles of any periodicity exists, and generalize our findings to period-n cycles. We show that the possibility of cycles occurs under empirically plausible conditions. Throughout, we emphasize that the economics of cycles is linked to the intergenerational trade of shares and their pricing in the asset market. [less ▲]

An alternative or supplementary approach named as physical layer security has been proposed to afford an extra security layer on top of the conventional cryptography technique. In this paper, an overview of secrecy performance investigations over the classic Alice-Bob-Eve wiretap fading channels is conducted. On the basis of the classic wiretap channel model, we have comprehensively listed and thereafter compared the existing works on physical layer secrecy analysis considering the small-scale, large-scale, composite, and cascaded fading channel models. Exact secrecy metrics expressions, including secrecy outage probability (SOP), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ), average secrecy capacity (ASC), and secrecy bounds, including the lower bound of SOP and ergodic secrecy capacity, are presented. In order to encompass the aforementioned four kinds of fading channel models with a more \textit{generic} and \textit{flexible} distribution, the mixture gamma (MG), mixture of Gaussian (MoG), and Fox's $H$-function distributions are three useful candidates to largely include the above-mentioned four kinds of fading channel models. It is shown that they are flexible and general when assisting the secrecy analysis to obtain closed-form expressions. Their advantages and limitations are also highlighted. Conclusively, these three approaches are proven to provide a unified secrecy analysis framework and can cover all types of independent wiretap fading channel models. Apart from those, revisiting the existing secrecy enhancement techniques based on our system configuration, the on-off transmission scheme, jamming approach (including artificial noise (AN) & artificial fast fading (AFF)), antenna selection, and security region are presented. In the Greater Region SaarLorLux, which consists of Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Wallonia, the beginnings of beer date back to the Roman occupation. At first, beer was brewed mainly in monasteries. The oldest evidence of a monastic brewery is found in Lorraine, dating from 771 BC, and in Luxembourg only from around 1300. In both regions, religious institutions were the main type of brewery until the industrialization. The first evidence of a municipal brewery dates back to the 12th century; in the beginning, these breweries did not compete with the monasteries. In Wallonia, too, monastic breweries developed until the French occupation, and hence secularisation, brought the business to a halt from 1794. Today, most of the remaining breweries in the Greater Region are part of international groups. There are still a few independent breweries, such as in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, where one of Germany's largest brewing groups, the Karlsberg Group, dominates the industry. In addition to these national companies, since the 1980s, microbreweries have begun to emerge with an exclusively local scope. They ensure that local brewing techniques are not lost. [less ▲]

A unified matrix formulation is presented for the analysis of intersymbol and intercarrier interference in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed formulation relies on six parameters and allows studying various schemes, including those with windowing in the transmitter and/or in the receiver (called windowed OFDM systems), which may add cyclic suffix and/or cyclic prefix (CP), besides the conventional CP-OFDM. The proposed framework encompasses seven different OFDM systems. It considers the overlap-and-add procedure performed in the transmitter of windowed OFDM systems, being jointly formulated with the channel convolution. The intersymbol and intercarrier interference, caused when the order of the channel impulse response is higher than the number of CP samples, is characterized. A new equivalent channel matrix that is useful for calculating both the received signal and the interference power is defined and characterized. Unlike previous works, this new channel matrix has no restrictions on the length of the channel impulse response, which means that the study is not constrained to the particular case of two or three data blocks interfering in the received signal. Theoretical expressions for the powers of three different kinds of interference are derived. These expressions allow calculating the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, useful for computing the data rate of each OFDM system. The proposed formulation is applied to realistic examples, showing its effectiveness through comparisons based on numerical performance assessments of the considered OFDM systems. [less ▲]

The current COVID-19 outbreak represents a most serious challenge for societies worldwide. It isendangering the health of millions of people, and resulting in severe socioeconomic challenges dueto lock-down measures. Governments worldwide aim to devise exit strategies to revive the economywhile keeping the pandemic under control. The problem is that the effects of distinct measures arenot well quantified. This paper compares several suppression approaches and potential exit strategiesusing a new extended epidemic SEIR model. It concludes that while rapid and strong lock-down isan effective pandemic suppression measure, a combination of other strategies such as social distanc-ing, active protection and removal can achieve similar suppression synergistically. This quantitativeunderstanding will support the establishment of mid- and long-term interventions. Finally, the paperprovides an online tool that allows researchers and decision makers to interactively simulate diversescenarios with our model. [less ▲]

For a finite-type surface S, we study a preferred basis for the commutative algebra C[XSL3(C)(S)] of regular functions on the SL3(C)-character variety, introduced by Sikora and Westbury. These basis elements come from the trace functions associated to certain tri-valent graphs embedded in the surface S. We show that this basis can be naturally indexed by positive integer coordinates, defined by Knutson-Tao rhombus inequalities. These coordinates are related, by the geometric theory of Fock and Goncharov, to the tropical points at infinity of the dual version of the character variety. [less ▲]

With stunning green landscapes, exemplary public transport, and picturesque walkable cities, Switzerland often occupies the public imaginary of a place that has tackled sustainable development. This research, however, looks under the hood and finds that this development path supports not only modes of capital accumulation, but also certain less sustainable patterns of development and governance. This paper examines this apparent paradox by looking at the role of sustainable development as a master-signifier in Swiss urban development processes. Empirical observations were made in the Glatt Valley of Switzerland, where governing officials of small municipalities are confronted with coordinating urban development under growth pressure within cantonal and federal policy frameworks that claim sustainable development. It can be seen that sustainable development is an empty master-signifier that policy makers engage to justify the quilting of a certain hegemonic discourses of power that reflect in further uneven urban development. By reproducing business as usual market-led urban growth, fragmentation is maintained as are social spatial disparities are entrenched. [less ▲]

For more than a century, scientists have been collecting behavioral data--an increasing fraction of which is now being publicly shared so other researchers can reuse them to replicate, integrate or extend past results. Although behavioral data is fundamental to many scientific fields, there is currently no widely adopted standard for formatting, naming, organizing, describing or sharing such data. This lack of standardization is a major bottleneck for scientific progress. Not only does it prevent the effective reuse of data, it also affects how behavioral data in general are processed, as non-standard data calls for custom-made data analysis code and prevents the development of efficient tools. To address this problem, we develop the Behaverse Data Model (BDM), a standard for structuring behavioral data. Here we focus on major concepts in behavioral data, leaving further details and developments to the project's website (https://behaverse.github.io/data-model/). [less ▲]

Urban green areas cover more than 6% of urban land in Europe. This paper quan-tifies the impact of urban green areas on city structures for more than 300 Europeancities. It discusses the economic effects of the local amenity produced by green urbanareas using an urban economics model with various set of preferences. It estimatesthose models using data on detailed residential land uses, green urban areas and popu-lation density. It finally assesses the economic effects of reducing urban green areas incounterfactual exercises where cities are closed and open to migration and green urbanland is converted to residential plots or not. By this strategy, the economic assess-ment accounts for the general equilibrium effects through endogenous land prices andresidential space and location choices. It shows that the gross benefits of urban greenareas are substantial. A uniform removal of half of the urban green areas is equivalentto 6-9% reduction of household annual income. However, the conversion of those areasto residential plots brings a net gain of approximately 4% [less ▲]

Parkinson’s disease (PD) etiology is associated with genetic and environmental factors that lead to a loss of dopaminergic neurons. However, the functional interpretation of PD-associated risk variants and how other midbrain cells contribute to this neurodegenerative process are poorly understood. Here, we profiled >41,000 single-nuclei transcriptomes of postmortem midbrain tissue from 6 idiopathic PD (IPD) patients and 5 matched controls. We show that PD-risk variants are associated with glia- and neuron-specific gene expression patterns. Furthermore, Microglia and astrocytes presented IPD-specific cell proliferation and dysregulation of genes related to unfolded protein response and cytokine signalling. IPD-microglia revealed a specific pro-inflammatory trajectory. Finally, we discovered a neuronal cell cluster exclusively present in IPD midbrains characterized by CADPS2 overexpression and a high proportion of cycling cells. We conclude that elevated CADPS2 expression is specific to dysfunctional dopaminergic neurons, which have lost their dopaminergic identity and unsuccessful attempt to re-enter the cell cycle. How does population aging affect economic growth and factor shares in times of increasingly automatable production processes? The present paper addresses this question in a new macroeconomic model of automation where competitive firms perform tasks to produce output. Tasks require labor and machines as inputs. New machines embody superior technological knowledge and substitute for labor in the performance of tasks. The incentive to automate is stronger if wages are higher. Automation is shown to boost the aggregate demand for labor if and only if the incentives to automate are strong enough and to reduce the labor share. These predictions obtain even though automation is labor-augmenting in the reduced-form production function. Population aging due to a higher longevity or a decline in fertility may strengthen or weaken the incentives to automate. Irrespective of its source, population aging is predicted to increase the growth rate of per-capita GDP in the short and in the long run. The short-run effect of higher longevity on the labor share is positive whereas the effect of a declining fertility is negative. In the long run, population aging reduces the labor share. [less ▲]

Let G be a commutative connected algebraic group over a number field K, let A be a finitely generated and torsion-free subgroup of G(K) of rank r>0 and, for n>1, let K(n^{−1}A) be the smallest extension of K inside an algebraic closure K¯ over which all the points P∈G(K¯) such that nP∈A are defined. We denote by s the unique non-negative integer such that G(K¯)[n]≅(Z/nZ)s for all n≥1. We prove that, under certain conditions, the ratio between nrs and the degree [K(n^{−1}A):K(G[n])] is bounded independently of n>1 by a constant that depends only on the ℓ-adic Galois representations associated with G and on some arithmetic properties of A as a subgroup of G(K) modulo torsion. In particular we extend the main theorems of [13] about elliptic curves to the case of arbitrary rank [less ▲]

This paper develops a static model of endogenous task-based technical progress to study how factor scarcity induces technological progress and changes in factor prices. The equilibrium technology is multi-dimensional and not strongly factor-saving in the sense of Acemoglu (2010). Nevertheless, labor scarcity induces labor productivity growth. There is a weak but no strong absolute equilibrium bias. This model provides a plausible interpretation of the famous contention of Hicks (1932) about the role of factor prices and factor endowments for induced innovations. It may serve as a micro-foundation for canonical macro-economic models. Moreover, it accommodates features like endogenous factor supplies and a binding minimum wage. [less ▲]

A large number of criminal offences, not only cybercrime, is currently committed in a way that leaves digital traces which can serve as evidence. This data is in possession of service providers, often located abroad. The current model of cross-border gathering of evidence, based on mutual legal assistance, is considered too cumbersome and lengthy for the digital world. Similar reservations are made as regards the European Investigation Order. In response the EU Commission proposed the so-called e-evidence initiative. Based on mutual recognition, the new European Production Order would allow law enforcement in one Member State to request Internet service providers in another Member State to provide requested data in principle without involvement of the authorities of the latter state. This new system is a legal revolution at various levels, including its significant impact on the service providers offering services in the EU, redefining their duties towards law enforcement and influencing the relationship with their customers. This article examines the paradigm shift caused by that instrument and its consequences. [less ▲]

Coronavirus and climate change are not two different crises. They represent two sides of the same significant turmoil relating to the progressive degradation of our environmental and health ecosystems. Against this backdrop, and in light of, not only, the cyclical time of pandemics, but also of the predictable occurrence of a new pandemic associated with the worsening of the climate crisis, what should EU law do to prevent and better manage the occurrence of such risks? To answer this question, the core claim of this paper is that the EU should implement a common, coordinated, and consistent risk management strategy [less ▲]

This study provides evidence for the US that the secular decline in the labor share is not only explained by technical change or globalization, but also by the dynamics of factor taxation, automation capital, and population growth. First, we empirically find indications of co-integration for the 1974-2008 period. Permanent effects on factor shares emanate from relative factor taxation. The latter also have a lasting effect on the use of robots. Variance decompositions reveal that taxing contributes to changes in the two income shares and in automation capital. Second, we analyse and calibrate a neoclassical growth model extended to include factor taxation, automation capital, and capital adjustment costs. The model is able to replicate the dynamics of the observed functional income distribution in the US during the 1965-2015 period. Counterfactual experiments suggest that the fall in the labor share would have been significantly smaller if labor and capital income tax rates had remained at their respective level of the 1960s.
