[more ▼] We study the ever more integrated and ever more unbalanced trade relationships between European countries. To better capture the complexity of economic networks, we propose two global measures that assess the trade integration and the trade imbalances of the European countries. These measures are the network (or indirect) counterparts to traditional (or direct) measures such as the trade-to-GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and trade deficit-to-GDP ratios. Our indirect tools account for the European inter-country trade structure and follow (i) a decomposition of the global trade flow into elementary flows that highlight the long-range dependencies between exporting and importing economies and (ii) the commute-time distance for trade integration, which measures the impact of a perturbation in the economy of a country on another country, possibly through intermediate partners by domino effect. Our application addresses the impact of the launch of the Euro. We find that the indirect imbalance measures better identify the countries ultimately bearing deficits and surpluses, by neutralizing the impact of trade transit countries, such as the Netherlands. Among others, we find that ultimate surpluses of Germany are quite concentrated in only three partners. We also show that for some countries, the direct and indirect measures of trade integration diverge, thereby revealing that these countries (e.g. Greece and Portugal) trade to a smaller extent with countries considered as central in the European Union network. We study the special case of toric Sasaki-Einstein manifolds known as Y p,q manifolds. We use the localisation technique to compute the full perturbative part of the partition function. The full equivariant result is expressed in terms of certain special function which appears to be a curious generalisation of the triple sine function. As an application of our general result we study the large N behaviour for the case of single hypermultiplet in adjoint representation and we derive the N 3-behaviour in this case. [more ▼] Systemic approaches to the study of a biological cell or tissue rely increasingly on the use of context-specific metabolic network models. The reconstruction of such a model from high-throughput data can routinely involve large numbers of tests under different conditions and extensive parameter tuning, which calls for fast algorithms. We present FASTCORE, a generic algorithm for reconstructing context-specific metabolic network models from global genome-wide metabolic network models such as Recon X. FASTCORE takes as input a core set of reactions that are known to be active in the context of interest (e.g., cell or tissue), and it searches for a flux consistent subnetwork of the global network that contains all reactions from the core set and a minimal set of additional reactions. Our key observation is that a minimal consistent reconstruction can be defined via a set of sparse modes of the global network, and FASTCORE iteratively computes such a set via a series of linear programs. Experiments on liver data demonstrate speedups of several orders of magnitude, and significantly more compact reconstructions, over a chief rival method. Given its simplicity and its excellent performance, FASTCORE can form the backbone of many future metabolic network reconstruction algorithms. [more ▼] The digital research corpus ‘A rereading of the Werner Report of 8 October 1970 in the light of the Pierre Werner family archives’ showcases the results of the first stage of the ‘Pierre Werner and Europe’ research project (2011-2013). Based on a thorough exploration of the Werner family archives, which have been opened for the first time for research purposes, and also on other relevant archives — both Luxembourgish and international, public and private — containing multimedia material in several languages, this corpus throws light on the alchemy of the Werner Report and the mindset in which it was developed. Previously unpublished documents have helped clarify the varied, nuanced role of Pierre Werner and his personal contribution to the development and adoption of the stage-by-stage plan, on a theoretical, methodological and political level, in the context of his European achievements as a whole. The research corpus contains a comprehensive, varied selection of primary sources and related resources, as well as a detailed analytical study, which provides a new interpretation of various little-known, original sources. This corpus offers a ‘rereading’, a fresh look at the Werner Report, retracing the context and historical background in which the report was drafted and examining the work of the Werner Committee, and highlighting the impact of the Werner Plan on the path towards Economic and Monetary Union. In the interests of clarity, the study is accompanied by a list of references cited by section, as well as a list of key figures with brief biographical details, a comprehensive bibliography and a chronology. [more ▼] We study the effect of a declining labor force on the incentives to engage in labor-saving technical change and ask how this effect is influenced by institutional characteristics of the pension scheme. When labor is scarcer it becomes more expensive and innovation investments that increase labor productivity are more profitable. We incorporate this channel in a new dynamic general equilibrium model with endogenous economic growth and heterogeneous overlapping generations. We calibrate the model for the US economy and obtain the following results. First, the effect of a decline in population growth on labor productivity growth is positive and quantitatively significant. In our benchmark, it is predicted to increase from an average annual growth rate of 1.74% over 1990-2000 to 2.41% in 2100. Second, institutional characteristics of the pension system matter both for the growth performance and for individual welfare. Third, the assessment of pension reform proposals may depend on whether economic growth is endogenous or exogenous. [more ▼] Does population aging and the associated increase in the old-age dependency ratio affect economic growth ? The answer is given in a novel analytical framework that allows for population aging to affect endogenous capital- and labor-saving technical change. The short-run analysis reveals that population aging induces more labor- and less capital-saving technical change as it increases the relative scarcity of labor with respect to capital. Due to external contemporaneous knowledge spill-overs across innovating firms induced technical change has a first-order effect on current aggregate income. In the long-run capitalsaving technical progress vanishes, and the economy’s growth rate reflects only labor-saving technical change. However, the mere possibility of capital-saving technical change is shown to imply that the economy’s steady-state growth rate becomes independent of its age structure: neither a higher life-expectancy nor a decline in fertility affects economic growth in the long run. [more ▼] Uzawa’s steady-state growth theorem (Uzawa (1961)) is generalized to a neoclassical economy that uses current output, e. g., to create technical progress or to manufacture intermediates. The difference between aggregate final-good production and these resources is referred to as net output. The new generalized steady-state growth theorem holds since net output exhibits constant returns to scale in capital and labor. This insight provides an understanding for why technical change is labor-augmenting in steady state even if capital-augmenting technical change is feasible. By example, this point is made for three recent growth models that allow for endogenous capital- and labor-augmenting technical change, namely, Irmen (2013), Acemoglu (2003), and Acemoglu (2009), Chapter 15. The reduced form of these models is shown to be consistent with the generalized steady-state growth theorem. In order to construct such a bicategory, we first define a 2-category (Red Atl) whose objects are reduced orbifold atlases (on paracompact, second countable, Hausdorff topological spaces). The definition of morphisms is obtained as a slight modification of a definition by A. Pohl, while the definition of 2-morphisms and compositions of them is new in this setup. Using the bicalculus of fractions described by D. Pronk, we are able to construct from such a 2-category the bicategory (Red Orb). We prove that it is equivalent to the bicategory of reduced orbifolds described in terms of proper, effective, étale Lie groupoids by D. Pronk and I. [more ▼] This paper examines the home market effect in the framework of heterogeneous firms. The paper finds that not only trade costs but also fixed trade costs cause the home market effect and the reverse home market effect can occur as the fixed trade costs are very low. In addition, the agnitude of the home market effect varies with industry characteristics. Industries with low trade costs, high fixed production costs, low fixed export costs, and high productivity dispersion tend to be more concentrated in large countries. Finally, the negative impact of trade barriers on the home market effect is dampened by the elasticity of substitution which is contrary with the result of the homogeneous firm model. An empirical model is built to test these predictions for developed countries. The empirical results are consistent with the predictions of the theoretical model. [more ▼] This paper provides an ethnographic understanding of harmony as language policy in China. We ground this understanding in a historical analysis of ‘harmony’ as a distinct traditional Chinese ideal that gradually finds its new expressions through policy in contemporary China. Based on this, we will focus particularly on language practices surrounding ‘harmony’ that are emerging from the Internet, a discursive space and site of policing that is highly diverse while also heavily contested with respect to policing processes, and notably so in the context of the PRC for its stringent measurement of censorship and sensitization of language use. From this perspective of the Internet, we will show empirically that although the state is arguably the strongest stakeholder in implementing the policy of harmony – or, better, harmonization – in the case of China, the actual processes of harmonization through policing online develop in detailed, multidirectional and unpredictable rather than abstract, linear or monofocal ways. The outcomes of such processes are, paradoxically, alternative ideologies of harmony as well as nonnormative use of language. The general implications to language policy will also be discussed. We exploit two waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) for 50+. Contrary to previous studies, we find a higher frequency of parents dividing equally their transfers. We argue that altruistic parents are also concerned with norms of equal division, and hence don’t fully offset child income differences. The parents start to give larger transfers to poorer children if the child income inequality becomes unbearable from the parent’s view. We find econometric evidence suggesting this behaviour under different specifications and strategies. Furthermore, contextual variables like the gini coefficient and pension expenditures help to explain country differences with respect to the division of inter-vivos transfers. The lower frequency of equal division found in studies with American data may respond to the higher inequality and relatively lower pension expenditures in US. [more ▼] We examine zero-form charges in Vasiliev's four-dimensional bosonic higher spin gravities. These are classical observables given by integrals over noncommutative twistor space of adjoint combinations of the zero-form master fields, including insertions of delta functions in the deformed oscillators serving as gauge invariant regulators. The regularized charges admit perturbative expansions in terms of multi-linear functionals in the Weyl zero-form, which are Bose symmetric and higher spin invariant by construction, and that can be interpreted as basic building blocks for higher spin gravity amplitudes. We compute two- and three-point functions by attaching external legs given by unfolded bulk-to-boundary propagators, and identify the result with the two- and three-current correlation functions in theories of free conformal scalars and fermions in three dimensions. Modulo assumptions on the structure of the sub-leading corrections, and relying on the generalized Hamiltonian off-shell formulation, we are thus led to propose an expression for the free energy as a sum of suitably normalized zero-form charges [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 140 (0 UL) Feynman integrals and periods in configuration spacesCeyhan, Ozgur ; E-print/Working paper (2012) Detailed reference viewed: 204 (4 UL) Growth-Friendly Dictatorships; Litina, Anastasia ; E-print/Working paper (2012) In this paper we show that in highly unequal societies, different societal groups may support a rent-seeking dicator serving their interests better than the median voter in a democratic regime ... Importantly, it is the stakes of dictator in the economy, in the form of capital ownership, that drives the support of individuals. In particular, in highly societies ruled by a capital-rich dictator endowed with the power to tax and appropriate at will, the elites support dictatorial policies that generate higher growth rates than the ones obtained under democracy. Such support arises despite the total absence of checks and balances on the dictator. [more ▼] The present paper studies the effect of the choice of product quality on trade and location of firms. We build a quality-augmented model where consumers have preferences for the quality of a set of differentiated varieties. Firms do not only develop and sell manufacturing varieties in a monopolistic competitive market but also determine the quality level of their varieties by investing in research and de- velopment. We explore the price and quality equilibrium properties when firms are immobile. We then consider a footloose capital model where capital is allocated to the manufacturing firms in the region offering the highest return. We show that the larger region produces varieties of higher quality and that the quality gap increases with larger asymmetries in region sizes and with larger trade costs. Finally, the home market effect is mitigated when firms choose their product quality. We show that the CDM contributes to an efficient funding of clean technology investments in least developed countries. However, the CDM is not neutral on the global level of carbon emissions as it entices countries to raise their emission caps. The CDM may also make inappropriate the inclusion of any country that takes no emission abatement commitment. It can even make inefficient a country's decision to commit to an emission target. [more ▼] In this paper we study the role of private debt financing in disciplining a state owned firm operating for a government that incurs a cost of public financing. We show that debt contracts allow the government to avoid socially costly subsidies by letting unprofitable state- owned firms default. Debt is never used when the firm and government share the same information about the firm. By contrast, when the state-owned firm has private information, the government has an incentive to use debt to reduce the firm's information rents. We identify the conditions under which a positive debt level benefits governments. They depend on the cost of public funds, the interbank funding rate, the share of foreign investors, the level and uncertainty of the firm's cost. [more ▼] In this paper we tackle the ANOVA problem for directional data (with particular emphasis on geological data) by having recourse to the Le Cam methodology usually reserved for linear multivariate analysis. We construct locally and asymptotically most stringent parametric tests for ANOVA for directional data within the class of rotationally symmetric distributions. We turn these parametric tests into semi-parametric ones by (i) using a studentization argument (which leads to what we call pseudo-FvML tests) and by (ii) resorting to the invariance principle (which leads to efficient rank-based tests). Within each construction the semi-parametric tests inherit optimality under a given distribution (the FvML distribution in the first case, any rotationally symmetric distribution in the second) from their parametric antecedents and also improve on the latter by being valid under the whole class of rotationally symmetric distributions. Asymptotic relative efficiencies are calculated and the finite-sample behaviour of the proposed tests is investigated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation. We conclude by applying our findings on a real-data example involving geological data. [more ▼] This paper analyzes the impact of foreign investments on a small country's economy in the context of international competition. To that end, we model tax and infrastructure competition within a differential game framework between two unequally sized countries. The model accounts for the widely recognized characteristic that small states are more flexible in their political decision making than larger countries. However, we also acknowledge that small size is associated with limited institutional capacity in the provision of public goods. The model shows that the long-term outcome of international competition crucially depends on the degree of capital mobility. In particular, we show that flexibility mitigates against - but does not eliminate - the likelihood of collapse in a small economy. Finally, we note that the beneficial effect of flexibility in a small state increases with its inefficiency in providing public infrastructure and with the degree of international openness. We present a general equilibrium model in which destination based consumption taxes finance public goods, while regulation of entry determines the number of firms in the markets. We find (i) no strategic interaction in commodity taxes; (ii) regulation leads to lower commodity tax rates if demand for public goods is more sensitive to income than demand for private goods and (iii) regulation policy is a strategically complement instrument if consumers do not over value product diversity. Policy instruments used to attract investments are taxes and attractive public infrastructures, whereas the policy choices of the rest of the world are taken as given. Applying the Pontryagin’s maximum principle, we first show that there exists one long run optimal size of the small economy which is saddle-point stable. The transitional path is two-dimensional, if the small economy is patient enough. Then, we show that the share of tax income allocated to the infrastructure expenditures plays an important role in attaining such a steady state. However, a deviation from this policy path can lead to an eventual economic collapse. [more ▼] This research advances the hypothesis that reversal of fortunes in the process of economic develop- ment can be traced to the effect of natural land productivity on the desirable level of cooperation in the agricultural sector. In early stages of development, unfavorable land endowment enhanced the economic incentive for cooperation in the creation of agricultural infrastructure that could mitigate the adverse effect of the natural environment. Nevertheless, despite the beneficial effects of cooperation on the intensive margin of agriculture, low land productivity countries lagged behind during the agricultural stage of development. However, as cooperation, and its persistent effect on social capital, have become increasingly important in the process of industrialization, the transition from agriculture to industry among unfavorable land endowment economies was expedited, permitting those economies that lagged behind in the agricultural stage of development, to overtake the high land productivity economies in the industrial stage of development. Exploiting exogenous sources of variations in land productivity across countries the research further explores the testable predictions of the theory. It establishes that: (i) reversal of fortunes in the process of development can be traced to variation in natural land productivity across countries. Economies characterized by favorable land endowment dominated the world economy in the agricultural stage of development but were overtaken in the process of industrialization; (ii) lower level of land productivity in the past is associated with higher levels of contemporary social capital; (iii) cooperation, as reflected by agricultural infrastructure, emerged primarily in places were land was not highly productive and collective action could have diminished the adverse effects of the environment and enhance agricultural output. [more ▼] We study the choice of transportation modes within a city where commuters have het- erogeneous preferences for a car. As in standard models of externalities, the market outcome never maximizes aggregate welfare. We show that in the presence of multiple equilibria prob- lems of coordination can worsen this result. Hence, a social planner focusing on the marginal impact of policies may miss the largest source of inefficiency. We discuss two policy tools: taxation and traffic separation (e.g. exclusive lanes for public transportation). Setting the optimal levels of taxation and of traffic separation constitutes a necessary but not a sufficient condition to reach the first best equilibrium. Comparing the relative efficiency of both poli- cies, we show that traffic separation should be preferred for large-scale policies while taxation better applies to marginal modifications of commuting patterns. [more ▼] This paper argues that multilingual/multicultural identity in Europe has reached a next level since we have entered the era of superdiversity. Under superdiversity we are confronted with a diversification of diversity: relations between ethnicity, citizenship, residence, origin, language, profession, etc. have become more complex and less predictable than before, and as a consequence there is a need to revisit, deconstruct and reinvent our theoretical toolkit to analyse language, culture, ethnicity, identity, etc. This contribution draws on ongoing ethnographic fieldwork in and around a Chinese complementary school in the Netherlands and is part of a larger project investigating discourses of inheritance and identities in multilingual European settings. It focuses on the ethnic and linguistic identifications of Dutch-Chinese youngsters on the Asian and Proud community of the Dutch social networking site Hyves, and shows how Dutch-Chinese youngsters of diverse backgrounds engage in creative languaging in „netnolectal‟ Dutch while discussing/celebrating their ethnic and linguistic identities. Focusing on young people‟s identities, this paper aims to entangle the complexities of being, speaking and learning Chinese in the Netherlands. It thereby explores the internal diversity within Chineseness and its functioning within, or repositioning as, a larger Asian identity as well as its relation to Dutch/European-ness. [more ▼] This article deals with the Galois representation attached to elliptic curves with an isogeny of prime degree over a number field. We first determine uniform criteria for the irreducibility of Galois representations attached to elliptic curves in some infinite families, characterised by their reduction type at some fixed places of the base field. Then, we give an explicit form for a bound that appear in a theorem of Momose. Finally, we use these results to precise a previous theorem of the author about the homotheties contained in the image of the Galois representation. [more ▼] We study how the level of trade costs and the intensity of competition can explain the existence of two-way, one-way or no trade within the same industry. As trade costs decrease from very high to very low values, the economy moves from autarky to a regime of two-way trade, through a regime of one-way trade from the larger to the smaller country. Trade is less likely when the economy gets more competitive. Finally once capital is mobile across countries, the market delivers an outcome in which capital is too much concentrated in the large country. [more ▼] This paper considers whether countries might mutually agree a policy of allowing free movement of workers. For the countries to agree, the short run costs must outweighed by the long term benefits that result from better labor market flexibility and income smoothing. We show that such policies are less likely to be adopted for less risk averse workers and for countries that trade more. More surprisingly we find that some congestion costs can help. This reverses the conventional wisdom that congestion costs tend to inhibit free migration policies. [more ▼] Die Großregion (2008: 65 398 km², 11,4 Mio.
