Die Untersuchung sozialer Ungleichheiten gehört zum Hauptgeschäft der Soziologie. Viele Ursache-Wirkungs-Mechanismen für Ungleichheitsphänomene sind gut erforscht, zumeist existieren alternative oder komplementäre Erklärungen für vorhandene Ungleichheiten. Aus dem Wissen, wie Ungleichheiten (in bestimmten Kontexten) entstehen, kann allerdings selten abgeleitet werden, wie sie verringert werden können. Mit diesem Papier möchten wir daher zwei komplementäre Analyseperspektiven vorstellen, die notwendige und vielversprechende Untersuchungsrichtungen definieren und zwei Zielrichtungen verfolgen: 1. eine Spezifizierung der Reichweite von ungleichheitsgenerierenden Mechanismen und 2. die Identifizierung von institutionellen Gelingensbedingungen für den Abbau sozialer Ungleichheiten. Letzteres meint, institutionelle Bedingungen zu identifizieren, unter denen ein bekannter Mechanismus nicht mehr wirksam ist oder zumindest abgeschwächt wirkt. Die Analyse von Gelingensbedingungen findet dabei ihren Ausgangspunkt in der Feststellung, dass es häufig einen beachtlichen Anteil an Einheiten einer Population gibt, die zwar der benachteiligten Gruppe angehören, die allerdings – entgegen den theoretischen Erwartungen, die uns von den aus der Forschung bekannten sozialen Mechanismen nahegelegt werden – trotzdem ein positives Ergebnis erzielen (d. h. nicht oder kaum von der jeweils betrachteten Benachteiligung betroffen sind). Das Analysepotenzial dieser Perspektiven ist in der soziologischen Ungleichheitsforschung bisher weitgehend ungenutzt. Die Aufmerksamkeit der soziologischen Ungleichheitsforschung ist auf Intergruppenvergleiche, d. h. auf Unterschiede zwischen Subgruppen von Populationen, ausgerichtet. Die hier vorgestellten Analyseperspektiven des Intragruppenvergleichs und der Suche nach institutionellen Gelingensbedingungen sind nicht nur theoretisch interessant, sondern auch hinsichtlich politischer Implikationen für die Gestaltung bzw. den Abbau sozialer Ungleichheiten. Intragruppenvergleiche und Suche nach institutionellen Gelingensbedingungen klingt dabei leichter gesagt als getan, denn mit ihnen sind sowohl theoretische als auch empirische Herausforderungen verbunden. So stattet uns unser theoretisches Handwerkszeug sehr gut damit aus, Ungleichheiten zwischen Gruppen zu erklären, anders sieht es hingegen aus, wenn es um Ungleichheiten innerhalb von Gruppen geht. Umso größer ist jedoch die Chance, mit diesen Analyseperspektiven auch neue theoretische Beiträge leisten zu können. Gelingt uns diese Perspektivenerweiterung, dann können wir neue theoretische Einsichten – insbesondere hinsichtlich der Universalität und Kontextabhängigkeit von Ungleichheitsmechanismen – gewinnen und zugleich eine stärker policy-relevante Forschung betreiben. Für diese Perspektivenerweiterung möchten wir mit dem vorliegenden Discussion Paper einen Beitrag leisten. [less ▲]

The "Bitter Years" was the title of a seminal exhibition held in 1962 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by Edward Steichen, and 2012 marks its 50th anniversary. The show featured 209 images by photographers who worked under the aegis of the US Farm Security Administration (FSA) in 193541 as part of Roosevelts New Deal. The Great Depression of the 1930s defined a generation in modern American history and was still a vivid memory in 1962. The FSA, set up to combat rural poverty, included an ambitious photography project that launched many photographic careers, most notably those of Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. The exhibition featured their work as well as that of ten other FSA photographers, including Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans and Arthur Rothstein. Their images are among the most remarkable in documentary photography testimonies of a people in crisis, hit by the full force of economic turmoil and the effects of drought and dust storms. "The Bitter Years" celebrates some of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century and, since no proper catalogue was produced at the time, provides a whole new insight into Steichen's impact on the history of documentary photography. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages was published a decade ago and has been influential ever since, not only in its European 'home' but throughout the world. This book traces the processes of the influence by inviting authors from universities and ministries in 11 countries to describe and explain what happened in their case. There are everyday factors of curriculum development - which sometimes include coincidence and happenstance - and there are also traditions of resistance or acceptance of external influences in policy-making. Such factors have always existed in bilateral borrowing from one country to another but the CEFR is a supra-national document accessible through globalised communication. The book is thus not only focused on matters of language education but is also a Comparative Education case-study of policy borrowing under new conditions. [less ▲]

Wie aktuell ist Feminismus heute? Wie sehen Aktivistinnen der Neuen Frauenbewegung die Erfolge und Rückschläge der letzten 40 Jahre? Die Luxemburger Bewegung hat viele Gemeinsamkeiten mit vergleichbaren Strömungen in Deutschland und Frankreich. Das Buch geht der Geschichte des MLF („Mouvement de libération des femmes“) nach, von seinen spontanen Anfänge bis zu seinem offenen Ende, der Auflösung oder der Fortsetzung in institutionalisierter Form. 1992 wird das Frauendokumentationszentrum Cid-femmes („Centre d’information et de documentation des femmes Thers Bodé“) gegründet. Die Autorinnen konfrontieren Archiv- und Photomaterial mit den Erzählungen ehemaliger Aktivistinnen. Dabei ensteht ein lebendiges Bild vergangener Zukunftsvisionen und (un)eingelöster Utopien. Ist Feminismus – als Schreckbild oder Kampfansage – ein bloßes Gespenst der Vergangenheit? Das Buch zeigt, auch ein „Gespenst“ verstört und macht nervös. 1848 schrieb Karl Marx: „Ein Gespenst geht um in Europa. Das Gespenst des Kommunismus“. Nach dem Zusammenbruch des Staatskommunismus hat der Philosoph Jacques Derrida sich mit „Marx’ Gespenstern“ auseinandersetzt. Das Gespenst – oder der Geist – steht hier für die Macht der Veränderung und für „Gerechtigkeit als Beziehung zum Anderen“. Eben diese Spukgestalt ist der Fokus des Buches. [less ▲]

The last few years have consolidated our understanding that security and trust are a socio-technical matter. Hence a call for researchers from different disciplines, such as sociology, psychology and informatics, to construct a holistic vision of security and trust. STAST, the workshop on Socio-Technical Aspects in Security and Trust, is an international event to support such interdisciplinary research. It reaches its second edition in 2012. The first took place at the University of Milano (Milan, Italy), hosted by the International Conference on Network and System Security (NSS). After a period of intensive work on national memory cultures, we are observing a growing interest in memory both as a social and an individual practice. Memory studies tend to focus on a particular field of memory processes, namely those connected with war, persecution and expulsion. In this sense, the memory – or rather the trauma – of the Holocaust is paradigmatic for the entire research field. The Holocaust is furthermore increasingly understood as constitutive of a global memory community which transcends national memories and mediates universal values. The present volume diverges from this perspective by dealing also with everyday subjects of memory. This allows for a more complete view of the interdependencies between public and private memory and, more specifically, public and family memory. [less ▲]

At country level, governance generally refers to the way (rules, procedures and behaviors) that power is exercised in managing its political, social and economic issues. The relationship between governance and corruption is very narrow, as poor governance provides great potential for corruption, and widespread corruption is incompatible with good governance. Improving the quality of governance is therefore a necessary condition for effectively tackling corruption. It should, of course, be pointed out that the quality and motivation of the senior leadership of governance also determine its function, since, as Y. Dror points out, no structure can offset the moderate leadership of governance or mitigate the damage caused by corrupt leadership. This volume analyzes aspects of governance and corruption, as well as relations between them both in general and at the level of Greece, which we have the certainty of contributing to their general understanding, particularly useful in the current political and economic conjuncture. Progress in European market integration over the past two decades has come at the expense of growing flexibility, or differentiation, in the laws that govern the Single Market (SM) as well as the way that these laws are implemented. This volume examines how the completion of the SM has been held back in the varied implementation of European Union competition policy, variation in national policies on services, corporate law, telecommunications, energy, taxation, and gambling, and the EU’s uneven transportation network. These sectors and issue-areas form the frontier at which the main political struggles over the future shape of the SM have taken place in the past decade. Broadly, progress in economic integration in the EU has been complicated by the need to reconcile perfections to the SM with the global competitiveness of European producers, and efficiency gains with ideational and normative concerns. In services, there is a clash between deregulation and social policy. Financial integration has had to reconcile different institutionalized views among the member states about the place of finance in the economy and society. The SM notion supposedly entails a concrete set of substantive policy commitments that form the basis of the ‘ever closer union’. However, increasing differentiation in the SM undermines the identification of the EU’s core constitutional commitments. [less ▲]

Taking up the various conceptions of heroism that are conjured in the Harry Potter series, this collection examines the ways fictional heroism in the twenty-first century challenges the idealized forms of a somewhat simplistic masculinity associated with genres like the epic, romance and classic adventure story. The collection's three sections address broad issues related to genre, Harry Potter's development as the central heroic character and the question of who qualifies as a hero in the Harry Potter series. Among the topics are Harry Potter as both epic and postmodern hero, the series as a modern-day example of psychomachia, the series' indebtedness to the Gothic tradition, Harry's development in the first six film adaptations, Harry Potter and the idea of the English gentleman, Hermione Granger's explicitly female version of heroism, adult role models in Harry Potter, and the complex depictions of heroism exhibited by the series' minor characters. Together, the essays suggest that the Harry Potter novels rely on established generic, moral and popular codes to develop new and genuine ways of expressing what a globalized world has applauded as ethically exemplary models of heroism based on responsibility, courage, humility and kindness. Welche Rolle spielen Vergangenheitserinnerungen, Gegenwartsdeutungen und Zukunftserwartungen in Erzählungen von Individuen, Familien und Erfahrungsgemeinschaften? Zukunft begegnet uns täglich in vielen Facetten: Ob die unmittelbar bevorstehende Begegnung mit anderen Menschen, die erhoffte Entwicklung der eigenen Kinder, langfristige Lebensziele oder, in einem globaleren Sinne, die Antizipation von sozialem, politischem und wirtschaftlichem Wandel - das Spektrum an Zukunftserwartungen ist groß. Die Fähigkeit, Zukunft zu imaginieren und zu erzählen, hängt dabei wesentlich von der aktuellen Lebenssituation ab und wird von zahlreichen Faktoren (u.a. Alter, Milieu, kulturelle Prägung) beeinflusst. Wie die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses interdisziplinären Bandes auf Grundlage ihrer jüngeren qualitativen Studien aus der Biographie-, Tradierungs- und Gedächtnisforschung zeigen, unterscheiden sich individuelle wie kollektive Zukunftsentwürfe von Landwirten, Soldaten, Migrantinnen und Migranten, Flüchtlingen, Feministinnen oder Familien erheblich. Es wird nicht nur deutlich, dass sich Zukunftserwartungen aus der Erinnerung der Vergangenheit und Deutung der Gegenwart speisen, sondern auch, dass Zukunftsprojektionen ihrerseits Auswirkungen auf die Interpretation der Gegenwart und den Rekurs auf spezifische Erinnerungsbestände haben.
