This book aims to enhance and challenge our understanding of language and literacy as social practice against the background of heightened globalisation. Juffermans presents an ethnographic study of the linguistic landscape of The Gambia, arguing that language should be conceptualised as a verb (languaging) rather than a countable noun (a language, languages). He goes on to argue that sociolinguistics should not be defined as the study of ‘who speaks what language to whom, and when and to what end’ (as Fishman defined it), but as the study of who uses which linguistic features under particular circumstances in a particular place and time. The book is therefore in part an exercise to unpluralise language, which Juffermans argues is necessary for a more realistic understanding of what language is, what it does, and what people do with it. It is common knowledge that protest movements do not persist over long periods. Generally, movements either disappear into oblivion or transform into a NGO or a political party. The World Social Forum (WSF) is the relict of the global justice movements of the turn of the millennium. Even after more than a decade after the first WSF in 2001 in Porto Alegre (Brazil) the protest events still mobilize thousands of activists against a neoliberal world order. With an extensive ethnographic research, Christian Schröder keeps track of the WSF from its origin to the WSF 2013 in Tunisia. The central research question is how the movement – unlike many other movements – manages to reproduce itself as movement since 2001. The research process based on Grounded Theory Methodology let to the development of theoretical concept called transpoiesis that serves to describe the mechanism of permanent reinvention of (transnational) movements. Zetzsche behandelt die Entstehung, Funktion und Wirkungsweise von Investmentfonds aus der Perspektive des Privatrechts, der Rechtsökonomie und Rechtsethik unter Berücksichtigung von acht Rechtsordnungen. Er zeigt, dass der im Vertrags-, Trust- und Gesellschaftsrecht übliche Formenzwang dem Investmentfonds nicht gerecht wird. Infolgedessen haben sich in allen Rechtsordnungen, in denen Investmentfonds intensiv genutzt werden, Mischformen gebildet, die zwischen Vertrag, Trust, Körperschaft und Personengesellschaft angesiedelt sind. Der Autor demonstriert die Konsequenzen dieser Typenvermischung anhand der wesentlichen Abschnitte in der Existenz eines Investmentfonds und zeigt daran die erhebliche Bedeutung der Selbstkontrolle der Finanzintermediäre für die Funktionsweise und Akzeptanz von Investmentfonds auf. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem ‚Forschungskompass – Innovationspreis der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg‘, dem ‚1. « Plutôt mourir ! » : voilà ce qu’évoque pour le plus grand nombre l’éventualité d’aller vivre en maison de retraite. Il faut dire que, depuis près de cinquante ans, ces établissements sont volon-tiers décrits comme des mouroirs. Ils perdurent pourtant, en tant que lieux hautement compé-tents car spécialisés et « adaptés » à la vieillesse, sous la surveillance accrue des services de l’État, dans ce qui est devenu un marché des solutions pour les personnes âgées.Dans un tel cadre, les connaissances envisa-gées comme nécessaires pour bien agir en mai-son de retraite sont hantées par le spectre de la maltraitance et de plus en plus spécialisées, nombreuses, segmentées, normées et parfois contradictoires. Malgré les tentatives d’amé-liorations, les professionnels, débordés, s’y décrivent comme impuissants à produire le ser-vice de qualité qu’ils souhaiteraient, tandis que les résidents y vivent comme dans une impasse, avec la mort pour tout horizon. Mieux com-prendre les contradictions de fond auxquelles la fabrique de la maison de retraite fait face au quotidien permet d’ouvrir des perspectives vers d’autres possibles. [less ▲]

Im Rahmen eines fünfjährigen Forschungsprojekts wurde der hier vorgelegte Musterentwurf eines europäischen Verwaltungsverfahrensrechts (ReNEUAL Model Rules on EU Administrative Procedure) erarbeitet. Ziel des Projekts ist die Verbesserung der Durchführung des Rechts der Europäischen Union durch eine Kodifikation des EU- Verwaltungsverfahrensrechts, die eine effektive Erfüllung öffentlicher Aufgaben ebenso wie individuellen Rechtsschutz gewährleistet. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Verfahren vor EU-Behörden, einbezogen werden aber auch wichtige Probleme der europäischen Verbundverwaltung. 18 Autorinnen und Autoren und weitere ca. 100 Fachleute des Verwaltungsverfahrensrechts waren europaweit an der Erstellung des Musterentwurfs beteiligt. The high levels of violence in video games have often been linked to an apparent decrease in empathy and increase in selfishness in Western society, yet surprisingly little research has been conducted on the role of empathy in the context of media. Through three empirical studies, this book explores the mechanisms behind moderating functions of empathy. The chapters discuss factors such as character played and players' interpretation of the character, as well as the effects of inducing empathy before playing a video game upon emotion, cognition and behaviour. The book reveals new insights that will inform the ongoing debates about the effects of violent media content. [less ▲]

Les hasards de l'année de naissance marquent le destin des générations. Deux guerres entrecoupées d'une crise économique majeure, une reprise de trente ans, un ralentissement depuis trois décennies, tel est le legs inégalement partagé de l'histoire sociale du XXe siècle français. Les générations nées avant 1920 subirent un sort difficile. Les suivantes, nées jusqu'en 1950, qui connurent les Trente Glorieuses au temps de leur jeunesse, ont rencontré un destin collectif inespéré : multiplication des diplômes sans dévalorisation, forte mobilité sociale ascendante, salaires et revenus rapidement croissants, meilleure protection sociale, etc. Avec la crise, cette dynamique cesse, et souvent se retourne, pour les successeurs, arrivés trop tard dans la vie adulte. Première analyse systématique de la structure sociale à la lumière des clivages générationnels, cet essai devenu un classique souligne l'existence d'une fracture qui s'amplifie au début du XXIe siècle. Cette question est politique, car au croisement de la transformation des classes sociales et de l'avenir de l'État-providence. Une exigence morale doit donc être réaffirmée aujourd’hui et se traduire davantage dans les faits. Mais comment ? En premier lieu, du champ théologique au champ des sciences sociales, qu’implique ici le concept de « valeur spirituelle » dans son rapport à la démocratie ? En second lieu, sous quelles conditions les religions peuvent-elles apporter aux démocraties des ressources qui leur manquent plus aujourd’hui qu’hier, en acceptant de se placer dans le cadre démocratique. L’ouvrage tend à étudier une matière qui a pris une place prépondérante dans l’ordre juridique des quarante-sept États membres du Conseil de l’Europe, qui recouvrent plus de huit cents vingt millions de personnes, en ce compris tous les États membres de l’Union européenne. La Convention européenne des droits de l’homme a, en effet, pénétré presque toutes les branches du droit. Il en est ainsi particulièrement de l’ordre juridique belge dont les autorités ont, dès les débuts, témoigné d’une grande fidélité au droit de la Convention. L’ouvrage se propose ainsi d’exposer ce droit à la lumière principalement de l’ordre juridique belge, tout en accordant la prééminence à la jurisprudence de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme. La matière est abordée d’abord sous l’angle du droit matériel par une étude de tous les droits et libertés reconnus par la Convention et ses protocoles additionnels. La deuxième partie est consacrée au fonctionnement du système de protection, par l’analyse de ses aspects organiques et procéduraux. L’étude vise avant tout les praticiens du barreau et de la magistrature sans oublier les universitaires. Sa vocation internationale, révélée par la diffusion de la première édition, a également inspiré la deuxième édition. The effectiveness of the information software system then, depends largely on the degree to which the organisation’s business is accurately captured in the business model. The business model is an abstract description of the way an organisation’s functions. Thus, the more precise the business model, the more accurate the requirement definition of the information software system to be engineered. A dependable business process is one whose failures or the number of occurrences in which business process misses its goal are not unacceptably frequent or severe, from certain viewpoint. A collaborative business process is one that requires the interaction of multiple participants to attain its goal. A time-constrained business process is one that owns at least one property expressed in terms of an upper or lower time bound. This book investigates how Dependable, Collaborative and Time-constrained business processes can be described such that the resulting model captures all the relevant aspects of each dimension of interest. Art-forms, which use digital technologies for production and design and which reflect these technologies critically, are becoming increasingly popular. Caused by vast technological development, art production and design has changed considerably during the last years. Nowadays digital artworks are generated multimodally by trend and integrate the visitor and the environment as represented and interactive participants into their work. In order to explore the meaning making potential of these artworks, the author has developed a systemic functional framework of analysis, which combines a sociological with a formal approach. This framework, which is based on semiotics and multimodal functional theory, enables researchers to analyze the interaction and exchange going on between artist, artwork, visitor and environment by describing semiotic resources that are used to generate digital artworks. Thus it offers an alternative semiotic perspective on art production and design and enriches our knowledge and perception when engaging with art. [less ▲]

Les deux terrains de recherche sélectionnés sont une entreprise aéronautique européenne et l’UNESCO. Ils ont des caractéristiques linguistiques similaires : l’utilisation de l’anglais comme langue véhiculaire, la localisation d’un site à Hambourg en Allemagne, leurs sièges sociaux respectifs en France, des communications régulières avec des sites en zone hispanophone, ainsi que l’offre de cours d’anglais, de français, d’allemand et d’espagnol auprès de leurs employés. La recherche se donne trois objectifs : comparer le «_prescrit » par les politiques linguistiques, identifier les situations précises liées à des pratiques plurilingues en milieu professionnel et repérer les rôles des salariés selon le vecteur de communication choisi. On fait l’hypothèse que le discours officiel qui enjoint d’utiliser l’anglais laisse, en fait, de la place aux échanges multilingues lors de différentes activités quotidiennes. Les réglementations linguistiques au plan européen, au plan national et au niveau entrepreneurial sont exposées, puis les recherches menées dans les milieux professionnels sont introduites pour faire émerger la problématique. Dans la mesure où le recueil des données est basé sur la démarche de la triangulation au moyen de questionnaires, d’entretiens ainsi que d’enregistrements et d’observations de réunions, il amène à analyser des discours de différentes natures. A partir de la question de cadrage, envisagé au plan linguistique comme au plan sociologique, on essaie d’établir le lien entre posture professionnelle et pratiques langagières. Il semblerait que les faits de pluri-compétences, de pluri-linguisme, de multi-linguisme et de pluri-activités donnent matière à repenser nos méthodologies d’enseignement des langues. [less ▲]

Der vorliegende Band ist ein umfassendes Werk zur Stadtgeschichte und Stadtentwicklung von Phnom Penh von 1860 bis 2010, in dem ein weiter Bogen von der Stadtentwicklung während der französischen Kolonialherrschaft und den verschiedenen Phasen der Herrschaft der Khmer-Eliten über die Schreckensherrschaft des Khmer Rouge-Regimes bis hin zur parlamentarischen Monarchie seit 1993 spannt. Der interdisziplinäre Untersuchungsansatz, der nicht nur auf die Zugänge der historischen Wissenschaften und der Stadtgeographie zurückgreift, sondern auch Perspektiven der Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie und Architektur miteinbezieht, sollte das Werk nicht nur für Historiker/innen und Geograph/innen interessant machen, sondern darüber hinaus auch für eine generell an Stadtentwicklungsprozessen in Südostasien interessierte Leserschaft. Ausgangspunkte der umfassenden historisch-geographischen Analysen, in denen eine Fülle von bislang noch nicht wissenschaftlich bearbeitetem bzw. öffentlich nicht zugänglichem Quellen- und Archivmaterial, vor allem aus der Zeit des französischen Protektorats, ausgewertet wurde, sind zwei unterschiedliche Entwicklungsphasen, die gleichzeitig markante Zäsuren in der Stadtentwicklung darstellen: nämlich einerseits die Etablierung von Phnom Penh als Kolonialstadt in der Doppelfunktion sowohl als Sitz der französischen Protektoratsverwaltung als auch des kontinuierlich an Einfluss verlierenden Khmer-Königtums von den 1860er-Jahren bis zur Unabhängigkeit 1953 und andererseits der „Neustart“ von Phnom Penh durch seine „Wiederbesiedlung“ nach der Vertreibung der Khmer Rouge im Jahr 1979. Tatsächlich stellt Phnom Penh mit der radikalen De-Urbanisierung der Stadt während der Pol Pot-Zeit und der anschließenden Re-Urbanisierung wohl einen einmaligen Sonderfall in der jüngeren Geschichte Südostasiens dar, quasi eine „Laborsituation“, die eine Reihe interessanter Analyseperspektiven ermöglicht. About the work of Michel Majerus' curators, museum managers, leaders of art institutions and critics have written a lot of reviews or essays concerning the numerous exhibitions. They were published in catalogues, magazines and newspapers. To find new aspects of Majerus’ artwork, the start is taken from the already mentioned stock of data material. The treatise makes somehow a synthesis in associating or confronting like samples, many of the above-mentioned sources, in order to obtain fresh insights. Cross-linked with new interpretations of certain works and additional information gathered in firsthand interviews with people that knew Majerus during his lifetime, the dissertation allows to outline more evidently the artist’s discourse and the specific qualities of his oeuvre. The art-historical relevance of Majerus around the turn of the millennium gets clearly delimited. The research distinctly features the new, the unexpected, the originality and the singularity of Michel Majerus' approach and permits to outline the importance of the artist for his time and beyond.
