In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) domain, the decision support tools are nowadays necessary in order to efficiently process the large databases generated with on-line sensors. In this paper a cooperative decision support system (DSS) is presented. This DSS uses a KPI-based fuzzy logic engine to analyse the plant performance and identify the operational conditions that occur in the plants. Then, it associates the detected operational conditions with YouTube pages in which videos are uploaded to provide details and propose suggestions. The YouTube platform is then used to share and validate suggestions by means of the comment functions and the 'likes'. This approach is innovative, free of costs, and useful for plant managers that can rely on a user-friendly platform. [less ▲]

While social change regarding trans(sexuality) has evolved within an expanding nexus of concepts, practices, regulations and institutions, this process has barely been analysed systematically. Against the background of legislative processes on gender recognition in a state formation shaped by heteronormative hegemony, this study traces how sexology, the law, federal politics and the trans movement interacted to generate or challenge concepts of trans(sexuality) from the mid-1960s to 2014 in the Federal Republic of Germany. The interdisciplinary study draws upon and contributes to debates in (trans)gender and queer studies, political science, sociology of law, sexology and the social movement. [less ▲]

This book examines contemporary educational research and its governance, addressing key questions via a multidisciplinary theoretical framework of comparative institutional analysis with original data and applying multiple methods. The authors explore and explain important changes in the governance of educational research and the contents of scholarship in education and related disciplines across Europe since the 1990s. This volume synthesizes findings from a multi-year comparative research project, including in-depth empirical case studies of three distinct educational research cultures evolving in Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The authors reconstruct and compare changing conceptualizations of educational research, embedded in increasingly internationalized contexts of research, and examine shifts in its governance, including patterns of funding, publication, and evaluation. They examine the producers of European educational research and the distinct role of the European Union in constructing a European Educational Research Area, in establishing cross-border networks, and in (re)shaping educational research agendas. Through innovative empirical analysis of programs of research on various levels and education researchers’ collaborations in scientific networks, they provide insights into (supra)national dynamics in education-related scholarship. Theory-guided content analysis of research projects funded by leading national funding agencies and by the most highly developed supranational research funding instrument – the EU Framework Programme – enables the authors to embed findings on Germany, the United Kingdom, and Norway in a broader European perspective. Attention plays a pivotal role in the experience of pain and its impact upon daily activities. Accordingly, research on the interplay between attention and pain has a long scientific history. Within this chapter, we discuss the theoretical frameworks that aim to explain the relationship between attention and pain. We argue for a motivational perspective on pain that highlights the critical role of cognitive, affective and contextual factors in explaining the interplay between attention and pain. To substantiate this argument, we provide an overview of available research addressing the bottom-up capture of attention by pain and the top-down modulation (both inhibition and facilitation) of attention for pain. We conclude this chapter with guidelines and suggestions for future research and discuss clinical implications of adopting a motivational perspective on pain. [less ▲]

Quelles sont les juridictions compétentes pour ouvrir une procédure d’insolvabilité et quelle loi doivent-elles appliquer ? Comment assurer l’égalité entre les créanciers dans quelque État membre qu’ils se trouvent ? Comment protéger ceux qui sont titulaires de sûretés réelles portant sur des biens situés à l’étranger ? Comment prendre en compte l’appartenance du débiteur à un groupe de sociétés? Depuis le 26 juin 2017, ces questions sont régies par le Règlement n° 2015/848 du 20 mai 2015, qui modifie nombre des solutions en vigueur sous l’empire de l’ancien Règlement n° 1346/2000 du 29 mai 2000. The Greater Region Saar-Lor-Lux : Towards cross-border supraregionalisation ? Border areas are often portrayed as 'laboratories of European integration'. Beyond the discourses and symbols, what does the concept of cross-border region actually entail? By characterising the region as the construction of an identity, a territoriality and a governance system perpetuated over time, this publication identifies and questions the specificities of these processes in the cross-border context. It distinguishes between inter- and supraregional cooperation thus questioning a border area's capacity to develop an ad hoc cross-border cooperation whose raison d'être consists in strengthening the commitments pertaining to the border area's interests. This study is underpinned by a discourse analysis and a conceptualisation of cross-border territoriality and supraregional institution. In this respect, the significance of the EGTC (European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation), a European instrument providing a legal framework for cooperation, is analysed. This issue is explored in depth using the emblematic case of the Greater Region, a border area that launched in 2008 a long-term strategy to develop a 'cross-border polycentric metropolitan region'. Composed of Lorraine (France), Luxembourg, Wallonia (Belgium), Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland (Germany), the Greater Region constitutes one of the oldest border areas (1971) and presents the highest concentration of cross-border workers in Europe. Die vorliegende Veröffentlichung ist ein Ergebnis dreier Forschungsprojekte, darunter hauptsächlich „Musikgeschichte in Luxemburg“. Es wurde in den Jahren 2012- 2015 unter der Leitung von Damien Sagrillo durchgeführt und von der Universität Luxemburg finanziert. Mit der staatlichen Unabhängigkeit Luxemburgs im 19. Jahrhundert und der Errichtung eines Bischofsitzes im Jahre 1870 hat sich, neben der weltlichen, zudem die Kirchenmusik in Luxemburg etabliert. Die zweite Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ist geprägt durch die kirchenmusikalische Reformbewegung des Cäcilianismus, der seinen Niederschlag auch in Luxemburg hauptsächlich in der Person Heinrich Oberhoffers fand. Im vorliegenden Band wird – ergänzend zu Band 1, in welchem der Briefwechsel zwischen Heinrich Oberhoffer und Franz Xaver Witt thematisiert wurde – der Briefwechsel mit Witt im Zusammenhang mit Luxemburg als Faksimile und in transkribierter Form erstmals veröffentlicht. Vorangestellt sind biographische Skizzen von Witt und den Briefautoren in Zusammenhang mit Luxemburg, sowie eine Einführung in den Cäcilianismus. Die Studie ist nicht nur für den Cäcilianismus luxemburgischer Prägung von Belang, sondern versteht sich außerdem als Anregung für weitere Forschungsanstrengungen im Zusammenhang mit katholischer Kirchenmusik zwischen 1850 und 1900. Bei der Erhebung von 50'000 stellungspflichtigen Männern in den Jahren 2012/13 sowie rund 1’800 gleichaltrigen Schweizerinnen standen zwei Fragen im Vordergrund. Erstens: Was sind die aktuellen Lebens- und Zukunftsvorstellungen der jungen Erwachsenen? Und: Welche Rolle spielen neue Medien im Leben einer der ersten Generationen von Digital Natives? Die Vergleiche mit früheren ch-x-Erhebungen bei den jungen Erwachsenen an der Schwelle von der Jugend- ins Erwachsenenalter belegen eine hohe Trendstabilität bei den Grundwerten, bei der Rangierung der Wichtigkeit von Lebensbereichen sowie bei den Determinanten der Berufswahl und den Familien- und Geschlechterrollenbildern. Werte, Familie und Freizeit Junge Erwachsene streben nach Unabhängigkeit und Selbstverwirklichung, betonen individuelle Bedürfnisse und aspirieren auf einen hohen sozialen Status mittels beruflichem Erfolg. Sie rangieren die Wichtigkeit der Lebensbereiche gleich wie die Befragten früherer ch-x-Erhebungen. Bei der Familiengestaltung sind herkömmliche Familien- und Geschlechtermodelle nach wie vor hoch im Kurs. Man möchte heiraten und Kinder haben. Der Mann wird ungebrochen in der Ernährerrolle gesehen, während die Frau sich um die Familie kümmern sollte. Diesbezüglich unterscheiden sich die Lebensansichten und Zukunftsvorstellungen der Digital Natives nur geringfügig von denjenigen der vorhergehenden Generationen. Wandel prägt indes das Freizeitverhalten insofern, als informationstechnische Unterhaltungsangebote und soziale Netzwerke neben herkömmlichen Medien zu wichtigen Gestaltungsfaktoren für die Freizeit avanciert sind. Die jungen Erwachsenen stehen heute in einem sich akzentuierenden Spannungsfeld zwischen dem Wunsch nach Selbstverwirklichung und dem Festhalten an traditionellen institutionalisierten Strukturen und Rollenbildern. Für erstere bieten die neuen digitalen Medien in Art und Form zahlreiche neue Optionen, die rege genutzt werden. Für letztere steht das Festhalten an klassischen Familienmodellen und hohen Berufszielen. Damit steht diese Generation vor der Herausforderung, viele nur noch schwer zu vereinbarende Wünsche mit gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen in Übereinstimmung zu bringen. [less ▲]

Multicultural societies are a phenomenon that is increasingly observed worldwide. This book brings together theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence on how culture contact is experienced at the individual level. At the heart of this book lies the question of how individuals living within a multicultural society experience the meeting of cultures. The studies were conducted in Luxembourg, a country where the foreign population has reached 45%. Luxembourg is a “natural laboratory” and provides an ideal context in which to study culture contact phenomena and to derive lessons for an increasingly globalized world. The empirical studies indicate a gap between multiculturalist ideas and specific forms of societal participation. The policy implications of the findings are discussed. These include a focus on highlighting similarities between cultures rather than differences, and addressing the issue of reciprocity – expectations of both, the receiving society as well as immigrants. This book provides an innovative analysis and interpretation of the overall trajectory of the Western European radical left from 1989 to 2015. After the collapse of really existing communism, this party family renewed itself and embarked on a recovery path, seeking to fill the vacuum of representation of disaffected working-class and welfarist constituencies created by the progressive neoliberalisation of European societies. The radical left thus emerged as a significant factor of contemporary political life but, despite some electoral gains and a few recent breakthroughs (SYRIZA in Greece, PODEMOS in Spain), it altogether failed to embody a credible alternative to neoliberalism and to pave the way for a turn to a different developmental model. This book investigates why this was the case, combining aggregate (17 countries), case study (Germany, Italy, and France), and comparative methods. It accurately charts the evolution of the nature, strength, cohesion, and influence of the Western European radical left, offering new insights in explaining its behaviour, success, and limits. The establishment of Banking Union represents a major development in European economic governance and European integration history more generally. Banking Union is also significant because not all European Union (EU) member states have joined, which has increased the trend towards differentiated integration in the EU, posing a major challenge to the EU as a whole and to the opt-out countries. This book is informed by two main empirical questions. Why was Banking Union - presented by proponents as a crucial move to 'complete' Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) - proposed only in 2012, over twenty years after the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty? Why has a certain design for Banking Union been agreed and some elements of this design prioritized over others? A two-step explanation is articulated in this study. First, it explains why euro area member state governments moved to consider Banking Union by building on the concept of the 'financial trilemma', and examining the implications of the single currency for euro area member state banking systems. Second, it explains the design of Banking Union by examining the preferences of member state governments on the core components of Banking Union and developing a comparative political economy analysis focused on the configuration of national banking systems and varying national concern for the moral hazard facing banks and sovereigns created by euro level support mechanisms. La gouvernance de la zone euro est en crise depuis 2010. Le modèle issu du traité de Maastricht de 1992 n'est plus tenable. Dans un espace économique et financier intégré, les politiques économiques des États constituent un sujet d'intérêt commun. Le partage d'une monnaie unique au sein de la zone euro accentue le degré d'interdépendance : les difficultés financières d'un État concernent l'intégralité des membres de la zone euro. La politique monétaire unique conduite par la BCE est intimement liée aux développements dans les domaines économiques. Au-delà de la stabilité des prix, elle doit contribuer à la stabilité financière de la zone euro. De nombreuses réformes ont été prises lors des cinq dernières années. Question 2 read as follows: Do you agree with the idea that non-Luxembourgish residents should have the right, at their own discretion, to register on the electoral roll to participate as voters in the Chamber of Deputies elections, provided they have lived at least 10 years in Luxembourg and have previously taken part in local or European elections in Luxembourg? Drawing on insights from the Anthropology of Policy as well as Critical Discourse Analysis, this work aimed at identifying which agents have been most active during the election campaign, which respective positions and arguments these agents took and communicated, as well as how these positions and arguments influenced the debate about the extension of voting rights to non-citizen residents in Luxembourg. Die meisten Musikschöpfungen von Dicks sind bei großen Teilen der Bevölkerung noch immer bis heute präsent. Bei Experten ist seit langem bekannt, dass Dicks der Verfasser einer Harmonielehre ist. Die breite Masse nahm bis jetzt aber keine Notiz davon. "Die Harmonielehre von Edmond de la Fontaine" versteht sich generell als ein Beitrag zur Musikgeschichte Luxemburgs und im besonderen als ein Beitrag zu den Anfängen der musikalischen Bildung in Luxemburg. Weitere Forschungsarbeiten könnten / werden sich der Einordnung der Harmonielehre von Dicks annehmen und die Anlehnung an diese oder an jene (deutsche) Tradition bestätigen bzw. wiederlegen. Des weiteren wird sich das musikpädagogische Wirken von Laurent Menager (1835-1902) und von Heinrich Oberhoffer (1824-1885) u.a. in die Aufarbeitung musikwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen aus den Anfangsjahren Luxemburgs als souveräner Staat im 19. Jahrhundert anzuschließen haben. [less ▲]

Les abus de drogues posent d’importants défis en termes sociaux, économiques, de sécurité et de santé publique. Quel est le profil socio-économique des consommateurs ? Quelles sont les différentes trajectoires familiales, professionnelles et sociales d’usagers de drogues victimes de surdose fatale ? Quel est l’impact des inégalités sociales dans la survenue de surdoses impliquant des drogues illicites? Quel rôle pourrait avoir la réduction des inégalités sociales ? Quel enjeu pour les stratégies de prévention et de réduction des risques ? Un ensemble de recherches originales menées au Luxembourg, s’appuyant sur des méthodologies innovantes et une revue de littérature scientifique abondante, ont analysé les liens qui existent entre mortalités par surdose de drogues illicites et inégalités socio-économiques d’usagers suivis durant dix-huit ans. Les pistes de réflexion mises en avant dans cet ouvrage permettent de mieux saisir comment les conséquences néfastes pour l’individu, sa famille et la collectivité peuvent être en partie évitées ou réduites grâce à la mise en place de stratégies adaptées de prévention, de programmes de promotion de la santé et d’interventions psycho-socioéducatives. Cet ouvrage fournit des éléments de réflexion aux décideurs politiques, aux intervenants spécialisés en toxicomanie, aux professionnels de santé et du social pour pouvoir mieux décider et agir. In European External Action Service, Mauro Gatti provides a legal analysis of the EU’s ‘foreign ministry’. The European External Action Service (EEAS) was created to coordinate the supranational and intergovernmental areas of EU external relations, but it is unclear whether and how it may attain this objective. Through an analysis of law and practice, Gatti demonstrates that the EEAS is capable of effectively promoting coherence in EU external relations. Although working independently from EU institutions and Member States, the EEAS can coordinate their activities at an administrative level. The EEAS is thus ideally placed to bring together EU external action instruments, including diplomatic efforts, development cooperation, and security policies. [less ▲]

Die Studie unternimmt eine medien- und sozialhistorische Neubeschreibung des Erzählanfangs mittelhochdeutscher Romane. Im Kontext der semi-oralen Rezeptions- und Performanzsituation des Mittelalters werden Varianzen in der Überlieferung des Texteingangs nicht als Verderbnis betrachtet, sondern ihnen wird eine kommunikative Funktion zugeschrieben. Anhand detaillierter Einzelanalysen dreier Romane aus dem 13. Jahrhundert (Flore und Blanscheflur, Wigalois, Wigamur) wird die erzähltechnische und rezeptionslenkende Funktion des variablen Anfangsrahmens untersucht, die Rückschlüsse auf die (epochenspezifische) Wahrnehmung von Welt erlaubt. Mit dem textanalytischen Modell des ›Wechselrahmens‹ und der detaillierten Betrachtung paratextueller Elemente eröffnet die Studie neue Perspektiven auf den Erzählanfang als integralen Bestandteil des mittelalterlichen Romans. Pendant plus d’un siècle et demi, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi a été tenu pour le père fondateur de l’école moderne. Si cette conception n’est plus celle qui prévaut aujourd’hui, elle reste néanmoins inscrite dans la mémoire collective. Pestalozzi y partage la place avec un autre précurseur venu de Suisse, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, dont l’Émile aurait fait l’initiateur d’une révolution dans la pensée pédagogique, l’orientant résolument vers l’enfant et les besoins de ce dernier. Pestalozzi aurait pour sa part traduit cette révolution en normes de l’éducation moderne et l’aurait diffusée dans toute l’Europe. Or, comme les recherches récentes l’ont démontré, pas plus qu’il n’a fondé l’école moderne, Pestalozzi n’a été l’initiateur de ce processus de transformation culturelle qui a "pédagogisé" le monde. On peut en revanche le considérer comme un intensificateur, un catalyseur de ce phénomène à son époque. Résultat d’une série de conditions contextuelles – des événements économiques, politiques et idéologiques dramatiques, comme la révolution américaine et la Révolution française – et de caractéristiques personnelles, le pédagogue est devenu, comme cherche à le montrer cette biographie intellectuelle, le porte-étendard indiscutable de cette transformation, qui consolida ses hypothèses. Pestalozzi est indubitablement la figure clef de ce bouleversement culturel, dont le parcours est retracé dans cet ouvrage. [less ▲]
