What do the new laws say about contracts and the role they should play in HREDD? Specifically, what do the new laws say about contracts and HREDD-related liability? Against this backdrop, what would you advise in-scope companies to include in their contracts to meet the new legal requirements? Article 12 of the EU’s proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive indicates that the European Commission will develop guidance on model contractual clauses that companies can use to inform their own contracting practices. What are some key principles of due diligence-aligned contracting that you would like to see reflected in this guidance? More generally, what improvements are needed for contracts to better support HREDD regimes that effectively prevent and remedy adverse impacts? [more ▼] A rising number of concrete bridges are showing increasing damage due to corrosion and fatigue. In addition to the regular standard visual inspection, the bridge’s condition can also be recorded using additional tests with repeated static loading and/or dynamic tests. To determine any damage to a structure and to check its structural stability, it is crucial to know the exact system properties of the bridge in its undamaged reference state. The system behavior is influenced by damage and bearing conditions and environmental influences, such as the structure’s temperature. The influence of temperature can even cause larger changes in the measured quantities (bending line or modal parameters) than real damage. Therefore, temperature effects should be compensated before any condition analysis. The present work aims to demonstrate the influence of different bearing types and temperature on a real bridge beam. For this purpose, various static and dynamic tests were performed in the undamaged reference state. [more ▼] The Second World War brought together several groups of emigrants in occupied Luxembourg whose roots lay in Tsarist Russia. At the beginning of the 20th century steel industry workers came from what was then Russian Poland, while Jewish merchants from Ukraine who fled the pogroms also settled there. After the First World War, the group was enlarged by the former prisoners of war and after the October Revolution of 1917 by the political refugees, often members of the so-called White Guard, from the Russian Empire. With the occupation of Luxembourg, the ethnically, politically and religiously colorful Russian diaspora was completed with the forced laborers from the Soviet Union. The Nazi occupiers redefined the positions and some in this group turned into the hunters and the others - the hunted. People with the same birthplaces and dialects of Russian ended up on both sides of the barbed wire of the numerous labor camps in southern Luxembourg. [more ▼] Early literacy skills are critical for children’s later academic achievement. A wealth of research showed that children’s home languages should not be abandoned, as they are crucial for promoting dynamic multilingualism, assuring cross-linguistic transfer and developing identities. To explore home literacy environment and family language policy of language minority preschool children in Luxembourg, we obtained 600 parent questionnaires, tested 226 children age 4 to 6 in their home languages and Luxembourgish, and interviewed 32 families. The results from the questionnaires showed that the home resources and parent involvement influenced children’s language awareness and their print knowledge irrespective of parent’s education and their wealth. Concerning children’s competences in Luxembourgish, children with positive attitudes towards their school did better than their peers in other schools. In the interviews, parents explained that maintaining home language is important for keeping connections with family, friends and their culture. This is the language parents feel emotionally connected to and the easiest to transmit to their children. Language maintenance is mostly achieved through conversations, movies, games and books in the home languages, children’s attendance of language schools on weekends, celebrations of traditions as well as holidays in the native country of the parents. The home language is, however, not something parents enforce too strictly, as they mostly correct the children’s linguistic mistakes by simple repetition. It is often with great pride that parents report their children having an excellent proficiency in their home language. Finally, through our professional development training in translanguaging we are helping teachers to integrate children’s different home languages and cultures into the classroom and strengthen the home-school collaboration in order to support children’s well-being, learning and identities. [more ▼] This communication was given in the context of the launch of a new book of saint Willibrord, archbishop of Utrecht and fouder of the abbey of Echternach (obit 739). This book, édite by the Luxembourg School of Religion and Society, is a comic strip, purporting to relate the life and career of Willibrord. The him of my presentation was to provide a lay audience with informations about the nature of the main narrative sources on Willibrord, i.e. hagiographical sources, and about what we know of their authors' agenda. These sources (extracts from Bede's Historia ecclesiastical written ca. 730 and the Life of Willibrord by Alcuin, written ca. 795) have been extremely influential in shaping the perception we have of the saint. The text of this contribution will be developped into an online publication. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web, Professor Valérie Schafer of the University of Luxembourg kindly agreed to take us on a trip down memory lane. Together, we will explore the history of the internet and the web. [more ▼] Musikhistoriographie ist vielschichtig.
