This infographic forms part of a larger series of infographics produced by the Sustainable Food Practices team at the University of Luxembourg. The first infographic is titled ‘Food System Synopsis – The Foodscape in Luxembourg’ and is available on our website. The second and interactive infographic, titled ‘Food System Discovery – Actors and activities in Luxembourg’, derives from our first infographic and provides a deeper level of analysis, a description and definitions of all the actor groups and their activities in the food system. The interactive online version is available here. The purpose of the series of infographics produced by the Sustainable Food Practices team at the University of Luxembourg is to analyse the food system in Luxembourg in four steps – from mapping the existing foodscape in Luxembourg to elaborating pathways for the transition processes towards a more sustainable food system.  This 2nd Infographic ‘Food System Discovery – Actors and activities in Luxembourg’ (reference: IG2-v.A) allows a user to explore the previously published, first static Infographic (‘Food System Synopsis – The foodscape in Luxembourg’) in further depth using playful and interactive navigation tools. Our methodological approach to this infographic will be made available here soon. Our research resulted in the two overarching kinds of actors: those that deal directly ‘with’ food – operating at the level of the food supply circuit, and actors engaging in a varied array of activities revolving ‘around’ food – operating at the broader food system level. These two combined comprise the whole food system. The research then led to an ensuing distillation of these actors into: actor categories, actor groups, and actor types, with each level further specifying the activities taken by actors. The definitions of the actor categories, actor groups and actor types allows the infographic to be transposed to other contexts, while only the example actors from Luxembourg are context-specific to the country. For these reasons, the depicted food system is not only Luxembourg’s food system, but a more general view of food systems.  In the future we will build on the two first infographics to demonstrate interrelationships, pressure points, gaps and opportunities – and the outcome of this analysis will provide the basis for the research team to unfold pathways for potential optimisation of different leverage points within the system.  [less ▲]

Our two presenters, Ketty and Catherine, comment on social and political themes mentioned in letters from female listeners living in the Minett. These themes include the call for pacifism during the Cold War as well as the lack of playgrounds for children in Esch. Our duo also offer some advice on culinary matters and household chores. The "Minett" region in southern Luxembourg was the industrial heartland of the country. The mines and blast furnaces, most of which have now disappeared, once dominated the landscape. Luciano Pagliarini's collection of interviews constitutes a unique corpus of audio testimonies that allow us to discover the local history and the daily experiences of the inhabitants of that time. The interviews conducted from the end of the 1970s to the early 1990s by Luciano Pagliarini, “an Italian born in 1957 in Differdange (Luxembourg) to a father who was an underground miner and accordion player and a mother who worked in a textiles shop, (and who) worked most of his life as a jazz musician in France”, all contribute to a particularly rich testimony of a past that ultimately forged contemporary Luxembourg. “An oral history of the Minett” takes us back to a not so distant past, one characterised by the intertwined stories of industry, labour, migration and war. It is the history of a region and its inhabitants. The aim is to rediscover a local history by bringing to life the daily experiences of the region’s inhabitants through their testimonies on subjects as diverse as: • what the miners ate as they engaged in difficult and gruelling work • the history of young people, who often followed in the footsteps of their elders and embarked on industry trades from a very young age • accidents that befell the workers • the question of the value of work, linked closely with that of wages • the memories of the two World Wars (1914-1918; 1939-1945) and their impact on the region and its inhabitants [less ▲]

The digital exhibition Éischte Weltkrich: Remembering the Great War in Luxembourg is a project developed by the C2DH, the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History at the University of Luxembourg, with the aim of addressing an important but neglected and understudied period in the country’s history, the First World War. Supported by the Ministry of State and drawing on the collections and expertise of some of the major Luxembourg museums, archives and cultural institutions, the project has progressively deepened and widened its scope, aspiring to become a long-term digital resource. The website is designed to engage a broad base of users with varying interests and degrees of expertise. It offers four independent but interconnected modes of navigation: a thematic, story-driven mode; a digital archive; an interactive geo-referenced map and a timeline. Additional sections of the website contain educational pages for schools and downloadable academic articles. The overall structure of the exhibition remains flexible and open so that it can be constantly enriched with new material, whether provided by institutions or crowdsourced. [less ▲]

The deL1L2IM corpus, created between May and August 2012 and last updated in August 2014, has been collected within the framework of a PhD project on the development of a learning method implying conversations with an artificial companion. This PhD work is presented as a qualitative investigation of instant messaging dialogues on a long-term basis (four months) between advanced learners of German and German native speakers, chatting about whatever topic they wish. The dataset is composed of 72 dialogues, each of them having a duration of 20 to 45 minutes. The whole corpus contains ca. 52,000 words and 4,800 messages and has a file size of 0.5 Mb. Nine pairs of participants – i.e. nine learners and four native speakers – were required, with 8 dialogues per pair. The interactions have undergone linguistic analysis whereby the annotation will be performed only on repair/correction sequences (incomplete learner error annotation). The goal of the project was to create an application for language modelling and to improve learner language applications, tutoring software and dialogue systems. The corpus is delivered in one written text file (in XML format, customized under TEI P5). [less ▲]
