This chapter describes an approach to the development of virtual representations of real places. The work was funded under the European Union’s €20m Future and Emerging Technologies theme of the 5th Framework Programme, “Presence”, 2002 - 2005. The aim of the project, called BENOGO, was to develop a novel technology based on real-time image-based rendering (IBR) for representing places in virtual environments. The specific focus of the work presented here concerned how to capture the essential features of real places, and how to represent that knowledge, so that the team developing the IBR-based virtual environments could produce an environment that was as realistic as possible. This involved the development and evaluation of a number of virtual environments and the evolution of two complementary techniques; the Place Probe and Patterns of place. [less ▲]

In this chapter, memory is considered from a life-span perspective combining a geropsychological as well as a life-span developmental view. Characteristics of such a view are This chapter focusses memory under the perspective of human ageing. It starts with a conception of ageing that highlights the interplay of genetics, life styles and culture as fundamental dynamics underlying the ageing process as well as it’s impact on memory functioning. A second section focuses the context of ontogenesis and describes central concepts of memory structure and functioning in a life span perspective underlining the adaptive function of memory use. Building on this, a third section elaborates the dynamic interplay and the role of memory in the self-regulation of the ageing self. The last section puts memory in the context of two aspects of culture differing between assistive culture providing knowledge and technology resources and culture as representing symbolic resources that help in the collective and individual construction of meaning. In diesem Beitrag wird der in horizontalgeograpischer Forschung und Grenzforschung zu beobachtende Trend hin zu synthetischen Betrachtungen von Räumen bzw. Grenzen diskutiert. Dafür wird am Beispiel der Grenzforschung und des sich dort vollziehenden Complexity Shift gezeigt, wie synthetische Betrachtungen mit ihren konzeptionellen Annahmen und analytischen Unterscheidungen realisiert werden können, welche Herausforderungen damit verknüpft sind, und welches wissenschaftliche Vokabular mobilisiert werden kann. Deutlich wird, dass die Praxis der Grenzforschung von einer Pluralität dessen, was an Grenzen als komplex aufgefasst wird, und einer ungenauen Verwendung des Komplexitätsbegriffs geprägt ist, mit der oft lediglich eine Kompliziertheit von Grenzen konstatiert wird und eine konsequente synthetische Betrachtung ausbleibt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der Komplexitätsbegriff näher bestimmt und Border Complexities als eine Perspektive für eine tatsächliche synthetische Betrachtung unter komplexitätsorientiertem Vorzeichen eingeführt. Abschließend wird mit Blick auf horizontale Geographien und Transformationsprozesse das Potential des Komplexitätsbegriffs für synthetische Betrachtungen herausgestellt und vor unzulässigen Komplexifizierungen in der Konzeption von Räumen und Grenzen gewarnt. Der Beitrag setzt Impulse für die Weiterentwicklung und praktische Umsetzung von synthetischen Betrachtungen, wie sie die horizontalgeographische Forschung einfordert. [less ▲]

Educational inequalities for different groups of students have been consistently reported, whereby (dis)advantages have been associated with students´ gender and ethnicity. Such inequalities may be partly due to teachers´ stereotypical beliefs and expectations, as they affect their judgments and behavior. This chapter presents a systematic review of research on the combined effects of student characteristics on teacher expectations, with a specific focus on the intersectionality of student gender and ethnicity. Following the systematic search of the database 1363 records were identified but after the removal of duplicates and different screening phases, only eight articles describing 11 studies, were retained. Results of these studies show that teacher expectations vary as a function of experience (preservice vs. inservice teachers) and outcome (e.g. school subject). Results provide support for an interplay of gender and ethnicity, rather than a cumulative or dominance effect, on teacher expectation of student academic proficiency and behavior. That is, certain combinations of gender and ethnicity create (dis)advantages for subgroups of students. These results are discussed in terms of theory and future research as well as their implications. [less ▲]

In this article, the concept of complexity will be defined in more detail and border complexities will be proposed as a perspective for an actual complexity shift in border studies. Border complexities stands for a concept that sees borders as relational structures and focuses on the unpredictable, self-dynamic interplay of their event elements and on its emergent effects of dis/order. In the course of the extending field of public daycare for children under the age of 3 the impact of family day care (professional childminding) has considerably increased. But, despite its recent professionalization and diversification its ‘family-likeness’ still counts as its main character. Mostly used as a root category for a bundle of structural characteristics it, however, remains a still open question what this ‘family-likeness’ mean in an actor-related perspective. This contribution starts, therefore, with the assumption that the family-likeness of childminding is an everyday practical accomplishment which gets accentuated and enacted in different ways of the diverse actor groups within young children’s care and education arrangements (parents, professionals, and children). In recourse to two case studies taken from the Luxembourgian CHILD-study it is showed how this multi-positional ‘doing family-likeness’ is embedded within the socio-genesis and everyday accomplishment of children’s care and education arrangements, resulting in definable different forms of this ‘doing family-likness’ across the case studies. With that, the article introduces a multi-dimensional analytical perspective towards the institutionalization of diverse ‘family day care-childhoods’, and thereby, also point on the contributions of young children to childminding as a family-like day care which are often overlooked in current research. Technology standards determine the availability and diffusion of innovative products, which have the potential to benefit society. Standard’s broad deployment enables demanders with low purchasing power to access state-of-the-art devices that can work efficiently with the sophisticated products or services of high-paying demanders (innovation inclusion). Meanwhile, a regime conferring exclusivity to the relevant technologies (technology exclusion) can be detrimental to the positive effects of technology standards. Almost ten years ago, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) reduced the aforementioned level of exclusivity by establishing an inclusive entitlement for all users of standard essential patents (SEPs), which are subject to the declaration to license under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms and conditions. Although Huawei v. ZTE represented a landmark decision, the substantive approach subsequently taken has not yet led to the desired level of inclusion. Among the core reasons for that are the information deficit of implementers and the failure of courts to apply the framework in an inclusive manner. The recent proposal for a Regulation on SEPs by the European Commission entails the creation of an administrative superstructure to generate inclusion, the realisation of which, however, carries significant costs. This paper takes a critical look at pertinent developments and advances a two-dimensional adjustment of the post-Huawei framework as a minimally invasive alternative which should be further developed and tested in the future if the Commission’s proposal does not become reality. EU administrative law – both as law and as a scholarly field – has, to a significant extent, suffered from a tendency to seek analogies with categories of state public law, more especially perhaps in its general legal principles and norms common to the various sectors of EU administrative power. I argue in this chapter that this normative approach, which has largely shaped its judicial and scholarly development and has contributed greatly to bringing about an administrative rule of law in the European Union, is limited. Phenomena that, while present in other legal systems, are core to the functioning of the EU legal order cannot be suitably tackled with conceptions of public law inspired by the binary logic of protecting individual legal spheres from the exercise of public authority that has largely grounded administrative law in state settings. In the final section, I propose an imperfect alternative perspective on public law, drawing on the institutionalism of the Italian jurist, Santi Romano. [less ▲]

This article is a story narrating the evolution of my own reflections during my Ph.D.: “Planning at the Borders of European Peripheries: The Serbia/Croatia Borderland and the EU Cooperation and Reconciliation Injunctions” (Ph.D. thesis, Tours, Université François-Rabelais, 2016). Using auto-ethnographic methods, this article demonstrates a conviction, the necessity to engage with a reflexive and critical approach, before, during, and after the production of research. I show first how I built the thesis’ epistemological approach, by progressively deconstructing classical theoretical frameworks (nationalist, postsocialist, post-Yugoslav). I expose and discuss then the outcomes of such a reflexivity, in particular how I gradually became conscious of the coloniality of (my) knowledge. These mental gymnastics allowed me to occasionally overcome – but regularly report on – the limits of my research, but also to recognize the unsurpassibility of certain aspects of my work connected to the situation in which I stated and conducted it. Reflecting on epistemological reflexivity contributes to clarifying scientific (in)validity of research, and better situates researcher’s arguments, their position and positionality. [less ▲]

Applied research on judgment formation, e.g. in education, is interested in identifying the underlying judgment rules from empirical judgment data. Psychological theories and empirical results on human judgment formation support the assumption of compensatory strategies, e.g. (weighted) linear models, as well as non compensatory (heuristic) strategies as underlying judgment rules. Previous research repeatedly demonstrated that linear regression models well fitted empirical judgment data, leading to the conclusion that the underlying cognitive judgment rules were also linear and compensatory. This simulation study investigated whether a good fit of a linear regression model is a valid indicator of a compensatory cognitive judgment formation process. Simulated judgment data sets with underlying compensatory and noncompensatory judgment rules were generated to reflect typical judgment data from applied educational research. Results indicated that linear regression models well fitted even judgment data with underlying non compensatory judgment rules, thus impairing the validity of the fit of the linear model as an indicator of compensatory cognitive judgment processes. The intergenerational transmission of values is a key feature of intergenerational family relations. A continuity in values can strengthen intergenerational bonds, family identity and loyalty as well as facilitating the communication and mutual understanding of different family generations. In the context of migration, the intergenerational transmission of values and culture is a special task where adherence to “old” values and practices taken from the country of origin and “new” ones experienced in the country of settlement has to be renegotiated. Whereas research on younger parent-child dyads has studied the actual processes of transmission, studies with regard to later stages in the family life cycle focus more on the interrelations between intergenerational value similarities, relationship quality, support and subjective well-being. In this chapter, general aspects of the research on intergenerational value transmission will be introduced and intergenerational similarities in values between older migrants and their adult children will be presented. Delivering better care for patients with bladder cancer (BC) necessitates the development of novel therapeutic strategies that address both the high disease heterogeneity and the limitations of the current therapeutic modalities, such as drug low efficacy and patient resistance acquisition. Drug repurposing is a cost-effective strategy that targets the reuse of existing drugs for new therapeutic purposes. Such a strategy could open new avenues toward more effective BC treatment. BC patients' multi-omics signatures can be used to guide the investigation of existing drugs that show an effective therapeutic potential through drug repurposing. In this book chapter, we present an integrated multilayer approach that includes cross-omics analyses from publicly available transcriptomics and proteomics data derived from BC tissues and cell lines that were investigated for the development of disease-specific signatures. These signatures are subsequently used as input for a signature-based repurposing approach using the Connectivity Map (CMap) tool. We further explain the steps that may be followed to identify and select existing drugs of increased potential for repurposing in BC patients. [less ▲]

The present contribution examines the potentiality of the non-conformist and rebel wom!n´s strategy in Eleonora Miano´s literature production: beyond the colonizer-colonized mindset. The analysis relies on her following literary works: Revelation (an extract from Miano’s book Red in blue trilogy, 2015) and L'impératif transgressif (The Transgressive Imperative, 2016a). First, the analysis discusses Miano´s non-conformity in relation to the colonizer-colonized mindset by focusing on her dramatic text Revelation, regarding the repression of the history of African complicity in the transatlantic slave trade. Second and finally, Miano´s countercultural concept Afrophonie, concerning the reinvention of African imaginaries, will be analysed. [less ▲]

Migration, intercultural encounters and integration do not cease with death, but are taken with the deceased into cemetery grounds. This article explores the translocal dimension of cemeteries, where diverse expectations and practices are confronted by, engage with and respond to regulations and unwritten rules of a particular public space. This article looks at migrants who wish to be buried or have buried close kin or friends in Luxembourg, a small country in Northwestern Europe. Disposition of the dead in the host country instead of post-mortal repatriation is often seen as sign of integration or belonging. However, this choice must be understood in the context of a set of constraints that can be experienced in a variety of ways. Examining three contested issues at cemeteries (burial practices, cemetery and grave design, and grave perpetuity), we show how both the regulations and unwritten rules of cemeteries are negotiated and challenged by individual migrants and migrant communities, highlighting different practices of lived citizenship. Based on participant experiences and narratives, we argue for the necessity of valuing and managing cemeteries, less as bounded spaces that can foster integration during life and after, but as permeable and transformative contact zones in which translocal citizenship can be enacted.
