[more ▼] The internationalization of higher education has gone hand in hand with a worldwide increase in English Medium Instruction (EMI) - the use of English as a language of instruction in countries where it is not an official language – as well as online lectures. This has led to lecturing contexts which are linguistically, communicatively, educationally and culturally complex. The challenges this creates for lecturers and students alike would benefit from a greater understanding of lecture discourse on the whole and EMI lecture discourse in particular as well as from insights into how we can support lecture delivery and comprehension. This special issue therefore brings together research on lecture discourse and lecturer training that contributes to the design and delivery of EAP lecture listening courses and (EMI) lecturer training. The papers cover spoken lecture discourse (Dang; Nesi & Alsop), multimodality (Morell et al.; Querol-Julián), lecture listening teaching (Crawford Camiciottoli) and lecturer training initiatives (Aish & Tomlinson; Deroey). Drawing on lectures from three corpora including one with an EMI component, Hilary Nesi and Siân Alsop identify the purposes and linguistic features of a specific type of story scenario in which lecturers describe a fantastic hypothetical situation. Their analysis reveals such scenarios to be more prevalent in the US MICASE lectures than in the BASE lectures from Britain, or the ELC (engineering) lectures from Britain, New Zealand and Malaysia. They are most commonly used to explain very abstract concepts and seem a technique to familiarize learners with technical terms and concepts. Arguing that such stories promote engagement with difficult concepts and do not require high level language skills, Nesi and Alsop advocate their use, even by EMI and novice lecturers. To better understand the lexical challenges of lectures and ways to facilitate lecture comprehension, Thi Ngoc Yen Dang compares vocabulary use in three different lecture contexts: EMI courses, non-EMI courses, and open access EMI courses. She discovers that non-EMI courses are more lexically demanding than EMI ones. The coverage of Dang et al.’s (2017) Academic Spoken Word List (ASWL) is analysed to establish whether and how it can be used as a shortcut to improve lecture comprehension in these contexts. Dang concludes that the ASWL would indeed be useful and recommends work with different levels of the list depending on the three course contexts. Also addressing lecture comprehension is the paper by Belinda Crawford Camiciottoli, which shows how freely available OpenCourseWare lecture videos can provide authentic texts and tasks for lecture comprehension practice. Based on research into these lectures, she presents a lesson plan and activities that focus on multimodal listening skills (in particular gesturing) and challenging linguistic features for L2 listeners (e.g., idioms, humour, figurative language, phrasal verbs, markers of stance, culture-specific references, and specialized terminology). She concludes by advocating multimodal listening skills training as a way to develop learners’ multimodal literacy. Continuing the theme of multimodality, Teresa Morell, Vicent Beltrán-Palanques and Natalia Norte describe how EMI lecturers on a professional development programme use semiotic and interpersonal resources to engage students during pair work. Their analysis of micro-teaching sessions from this training reveals the moves and pedagogical functions of ‘engagement episodes’ as well as the multimodal construction thereof through verbal and non-verbal communicative modes (spoken, written, non-verbal materials, space, and posture). This analysis leads them to argue for the development of multimodal interactive competence, especially in EMI lecturer training, as this may stimulate students’ activity, thus promoting active learning, language usage and critical thinking. Engagement is also the focus of Mercedes Querol-Julián’s contribution. Adopting a multimodal (inter)action approach, she examines how an EMI lecturer engages international students in an online lesson. This sheds light on the nature of interaction in this environment, viz. frequent discourse functions, the multimodal density and diversity of interaction stages and the importance of lecturer waiting time. The paper concludes with elements that could be included in training programmes for online EMI teaching, such as raising awareness of multimodal interaction resources, presenting discourse strategies for different interaction stages and managing students’ silence. In their paper describing an L1 lecturer support initiative, Fiona Aish and Jo Tomlinson illustrate how EAP practitioners can support internationalization in higher education. Specifically, they report on a project where EAP specialists use lecture observation and feedback to raise the lecturer’s awareness of sources of comprehension issues in the multilingual and multicultural international classroom. Their project explores ‘native’ and ‘non-native’ speaker linguistic competence in an English as an Academic Lingua Franca context. It illustrates how lecturers’ language can be adapted to an international audience and how EAP and ELT teaching techniques can facilitate comprehension. They detail the stages of the project, which they found simple and easy to set up. Finally, Katrien Deroey surveys EMI lecturer training worldwide in order to help practitioners with the design and delivery of such training. She summarizes the content, delivery, challenges and recommendations of published lecturer training initiatives in 18 countries. The main components are found to be language, pedagogy, communication and EMI awareness. Delivery happens mainly face to face in groups. Microteaching with reflection, feedback and observation is widely used and highly rated. Recommendations include framing the training as part of a broader continuous professional development programme which goes beyond language work and which is adapted to local, institutional and personal needs. Additionally, a basic EMI lecturer training framework is proposed. [more ▼] While the materialities and functionalities of borders have changed drastically in recent decades, the ordering principle of the border persists. At the same time, the selective character of borders is emerg-ing with a clarity that has hardly been seen in Europe before. This is the point of departure for the issue papers, which discuss the observation that borders do not have the same significance for all people. For this purpose, the authors work with the concept of multivalence, which assumes that borders have social values or relevances that differ regarding certain groups of people. The thematic issue with case studies of governance, flight, reporting, film, and literature shows multiple valences of borders, which stand for inequalities and refer to powerful cultural orders. After a brief presentation of the linguistic situation and the labor market in Luxembourg, the statistical analysis of a sample of some 8,340 job advertisements constitutes the main part of this publication. A qualitative study of a smaller body of job vacancies sheds additional light and a detailed understanding of linguistic needs in a multilingual and international labor market. Both approaches come to the same conclusion. The labor shortage and particularly the lack of people fluent in the "three languages of the country" has led to a segmentation of the labor market. This was especially true for the inhabitants of border regions, whose cross-border life worlds were suddenly irritated by closed borders and police controls. However, the COVID-19 pandemic also led to an increased evidence of social, cultural, eco-nomic, health and mobility boundaries beyond national borders. [more ▼] This special issue, which includes a translation of part of the conclusion of Serres’ thesis on the emergence of ARPANET (a work which is relatively unknown in the English-speaking community), two original articles and two interviews, is linked to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ARPANET and the desire to reconsider, 50 years on, the birth of this heterogeneous network that has left such a deep mark on the history of data networks. If we consider ARPANET as a first step towards the Internet, how did it determine – and how does it continue to determine – our current understanding of the Internet? What is left to explore and discover in ARPANET’s history? And if ARPANET is dead today, are its legacy and spirit still alive, and if so, in what way? While the few texts collected are of course not intended to provide all the answers, we hope that they will at least give food for thought. [more ▼] This volume explores the literary, cultural, social and political climate in Britain during the reign of William IV (1830–37). Rarely discussed by scholars searching to define the ‘Romantic’ period, and overshadowed by Queen Victoria, William IV’s reign signifies an important moment within the long nineteenth century, one whose literary output is marked by experimentation and generic instability. Rather than simply blurring the boundaries between the Romantic and Victorian periods, this diverse collection of essays demonstrates how the spirit of reform, creative experimentation, and an increasingly politically active middle-class readership produced a peculiar literary and material culture of its own. Responding to a wide range of print culture, including periodicals, albums, graphic satires, novels, poetry, travel writing and guidebooks, by canonical and non-canonical authors, such as Catherine Gore, James Hogg, John Ruskin, Mariana Starke, Thomas Hosmer Shepherd and Thomas Pringle, the essays in this volume map a complex network of conversation, personal and national identities, radical and conservative ideologies, and contested domestic and public spaces, both in Britain and abroad. By addressing various aspects of this remarkable period’s material culture and aesthetic innovations, the essays in this collection complicate our contemporary understanding of the long nineteenth century in Britain and open up new spaces for discussion. [more ▼] This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 14491 "Socio-Technical Security Metrics". In the domain of safety, metrics inform many decisions, from the height of new dikes to the design of nuclear plants. We can state, for example, that the dikes should be high enough to guarantee that a particular area will flood at most once every 1000 years. Even when considering the limitations of such numbers, they are useful in guiding policy. Metrics for the security of information systems have not reached the same maturity level. This is partly due to the nature of security risk, in which an adaptive attacker rather than nature causes the threat events. Moreover, whereas the human factor may complicate safety and security procedures alike, in security this "weakest link" may be actively exploited by an attacker, such as in phishing or social engineering. In order to measure security at the level of socio-technical systems, one therefore needs to compare online hacking against such social manipulations, since the attacker may simply take the easiest path. In this seminar, we searched for suitable metrics that allow us to estimate information security risk in a socio-technical context, as well as the costs and effectiveness of countermeasures. Working groups addressed different topics, including security as a science, testing and evaluation, social dynamics, models and economics. The working groups focused on three main questions: what are we interested in, how to measure it, and what to do with the metrics.
