[more ▼] In the twenty-first century, multicultural encounters have become an experience that is familiar even to the youngest. In superdiverse trilingual Luxembourg, over 50% of the population are foreigners, and many of them do not speak the titular language of the country. Multicultural classrooms are studied very closely, but Russian-speaking students, a new but exponentially growing addition to the cultural mix, have not been studied yet in their journey of school integration. There is a gap between the parents and the teachers regarding perception of the content of the studies and family aspirations. Instruction in the Luxembourgish language, usually unfamiliar to Russian families, is not the only obstacle for a child to make good progress at school. The Slavic family group and the Cyrillic alphabet, different holiday calendar and traditions, as well as differences in behavioural patterns and educational models complicate the perception of implicit school rules both for the children and their parents. In this short ethnographic study, based on five in-depth semi-structured interviews with parents, qualitative data were analysed in order to single out the main challenges that Russian-speaking families face while adapting to the public Luxembourgish preschool, the first contact with Luxembourgish language and community life. [more ▼] The three research articles in this special issue and the interview with Ronda Hauben are partly the result of the 4th RESAW conference, that brought together through the RESAW network a community of researchers, web archivists and professionals, united around a common interest, namely web history and web archives. The 4th RESAW conference, organised on 17 and 18 June 2021 by the C2DH (Centre for contemporary and digital history) at the University of Luxembourg, sought to examine the tension between marginal and mainstream in web history, and to go beyond this binary view. The aim was to study all the nuances, shifts in meaning, difficulties in defining and measuring audiences, as well as the evolution over the course of history of digital practices, content, producers, and communities, from the fringes and peripheries to the centre and the core of the Web. The RESAW conference was also an opportunity to launch the HIVI research project , hosted at the C2DH, and the topics that were addressed at the conference were also related to virality. [more ▼] The history of (Western) European industrial cities is often told as a tragic tale of rise and decline: from rapid industrialisation in the late 19th century and economic prosperity during the Trente glorieuses to the structural changes of the late 1970s and the subsequent deindustrialisation of the 1980s and 1990s – decades in which most mines and steelworks closed down, unemployment rates went up, new social problems emerged, workers’ identities eroded, and once prosperous urban centres became faced with shrinking populations and empty stores in their shopping streets. Finally, since the 2000s, former industrial towns have tried to reinvent themselves as creative and cultural centres. If we take a closer look, however, we can see that the socio-economic, demographic and cultural transitions were more complex than suggested by a simple rise-and-decline narrative. [more ▼] The Greater Region (GR) is Europe’s cross-border region including Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Wallonia. These regions share a consortium founded by five Univer sities. In the GR, emergency initial training for polytrauma patients’ management is heterogeneous. Moreover, learners encounter diffi culties in acquiring knowledge and skills on trauma due to case limi tations. This lack of experience can lead to adverse events and care errors. Lastly, WHO requests that states of the European Union intro duce training in prehospital trauma care. Consequently, the five uni versities are designing a common competency framework to define technical and non-technical skills needed to manage polytrauma patients. Methods: To design this competency framework, several steps have been planned: 1) a literature review on Medline Databases and CINAHL using key words related to training and polytrauma manage ment, and consultation of reference books; 2) a first proposal of com mon frame; 3) face-to-face and experts’ meetings; and 4) a Delphimethod to finalise and validate the framework. The first two havealready been carried out. Results: The literature review allowed selecting two books and 23 arti cles. The first proposal of competency framework is divided into three parts. The first part presents prerequisite knowledge and skills of the emergency physicians. The second part describes the rational of the frame, and essential concepts as the Golden hour6 and a timeline forolytrauma patients’ management. The last part describes seven med ical skills using CanMEDS system presented in two sections: five Non Technical Skills (Professional attitude, Long-life learning, Communicator,Collaborator and Leader), and several Technical Skills to use during Pre hospital phase and In-hospital phase. Conclusions: Designing a common framework for polytrauma pa tients’ management in the GR is the first step of an Interreg project. Based on CanMEDS system, seven skills have been defined. A Delphi method will validate this proposal. [more ▼] The UPcycling using Additive Manufacturing (UpAM) project seeks to introduce an innovative educational and interactive framework to demonstrate the benefits of upcycling so that any individual can produce their own products using recycled raw materials. For years, societies have been aware that the unlimited consumption of products is unavoidably intertwined with the unlimited production of waste. This is exactly why scientists and researchers have been trying to find alternative and meaningful solutions to the Linear Economy model, a model that dictates a specific sequence of events: extracting raw materials, manufacturing products, consuming and discarding these products. Looking beyond that ‘take, make, dispose’ approach, it was in 1989 that the notion of Circular Economy (CE) was first proposed by Pearce and Turner; a concept that is restorative and regenerative and that involves reusing products, repairing, recycling and upcycling. Therefore, the core element of this innovative and environmentally-friendly model is to rely on system-wide innovative processes in order to redefine products, services and, most importantly, our way of thinking, to design waste out, thus allowing a profound transition to renewable energy sources [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 203 (18 UL)![]() van de Maele, Jens ![]() in Science Connection (2018) Detailed reference viewed: 41 (1 UL)![]() ; ; et al in Arch + (2018), 231 Detailed reference viewed: 128 (7 UL)![]() Ligeti, Katalin ![]() ![]() in Eurcrim (2018), (4/2018), 212 Detailed reference viewed: 22 (1 UL)![]() Schafer, Valerie ![]() in Hermès: Cognition, Communication, Politique (2018), 80 Ce court article propose un bref parcours au fil des numéros d'Hermès pour saisir la manière dont la revue s'est emparée de la thématique numérique, et ce à l'occasion des 30 ans de la revue et de ce ... Public and private ... [more ▼] Two of the strongest education systems and economies worldwide, the United States and Germany, have been among the key sources for models in skill formation emulated globally. Public and private investments in skill formation have increased in both countries. Yet these systems maintain contrasting emphases: general and academic education in the U.S. and specific vocational training, in particular occupations, in Germany. Both countries continue to learn from each other as they compete in global education and labor markets—and continue their extensive bilateral cooperation. While both are meritocratic democracies with federal political structures, the educational institutions of Germany and the United States, especially those of vocational education and training, are quite different. This challenges the direct transfer of educational models. Yet there exists great interest among firms, politicians, and educators in praxis oriented, workplace-based, occupationally-focused education and training as it has developed over decades in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. This is because it has become the backbone of robust export-driven economies and protected these societies from the economic crisis and high unemployment rates that the U.S. has recently suffered. Thus, the German model in vocational education and training, especially dual apprenticeship, has been widely discussed, most recently by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address, in which he envisioned implementing elements of the German dual model to address the skills gap and unemployment in the U.S. economy. The current rise of dual studies in Germany—and functionally-equivalent programs in the United States described here—shows that employers are increasingly willing to collaborate with higher education institutions to recruit talent, train workers, and upgrade skills. [more ▼] From a sociological perspective youth as a life phase is mainly characterized by processes of socialization and individual development on the one hand and the managements of transitions to adulthood on the other. Transitions to adulthood are related to young people’s development of social and economic independence and their societal integration and participation. Transitions have changed substantially over the past decades: they are postponed, de-standardized and supposed to be rather subject to individual choice than the result of prescribed patterns. Hurrelmann distinguishes four domains of transition: (1) the development of intellectual and social competence (in order to achieve the occupation role), (2) the ability to enter a relationship (in order to fulfil the partner and family role), (3) the ability to use the market (in order to enter the consumer role) and (4) the development of a system of norms and values (in order to assume the political citizen role). From a functionalist point of view, these tasks form the key dimensions for societal integration. Young people have to assume certain social roles in order to maintain the continuity of the society. But in the perspective of a theory of action, social roles also form the key elements for the individual development. Young people are considered to be active agents and “navigators” that call the offered social roles and role behaviours into question and develop them further. hese theoretical concepts form an important reference for the migration and integration research as well. Since the developmental tasks refer to an individual life-course perspective, the focus of migration and integration research is rather on the institutions and the participation of young migrants. Based on the scientific discourse in the field of migration research Willems, Filsinger and Rotink define four main dimensions of integration: structural integration (education, employment), cultural integration (values, normative orientation, language), social integration (friendship, peer group), and identity integration (sense of belonging to the host society). The present article takes up some of these dimensions in order to describe the situation of young migrants in Luxembourg. It presents selected empirical data for the Grand Duchy and focuses on the different dimensions of integration.
