[more ▼] This paper analyzes the effect of public R&D subsidies on firms’ private R&D investment per employee and new product sales in German manufacturing. Parametric and semiparametric two-step selection models are applied to this evaluation problem. The results show that the average treatment effect on the treated firms’ R&D intensity is positive. The estimated effects are robust with respect to the different selection models. Further results show that publicly induced R&D spending is as productive as private R&D investment in generating new product sales. [more ▼] Patent pendencies create uncertainty in research and development (R&D) collaboration, which can result in a threat of expropriation of unprotected knowledge, reduced bargaining power and enhanced search costs. We show that - depending of the type of collaboration partner and the size of the company - uncertain intellectual property rights (IPR) lead to reduced collaboration between firms and can, hence, hinder knowledge production. This has implications for technology policy as R&D collaborations are exempt from antitrust legislation in order to increase R&D in the economy. We argue that a functional IPR system is needed for successful utilization of this policy. R-CoRe integrates Contextual Defeasible Logic (CDL) and Kevoree, a component-based software platform for Dynamically Adaptive Systems. Previously, we explained how this integration enables to overcome several reasoning and technical issues that arise from the imperfect nature of context knowledge, the open and dynamic nature of Ambient Intelligence environments, and the restrictions of wireless communications. Here, we focus more on technical aspects related to the architecture of R-Core, and demonstrate its use in Ambient Assisted Living. [more ▼] We study how alternative market structures influence market supply and R\&D investment decisions of firms operating in dynamic imperfectly competitive environments. Firms can reduce their future production cost through R\&D investment today, which is the engine of endogenous industry growth. Our framework enables us to identify key strategic ingredients in firms dynamic competitive behavior through analytical characterizations. These ingredients are a static market externality, stemming from the standard oligopolistic Cournot competition, a dynamic externality that arises due to knowledge spillovers, and a dynamic market externality that comes from the interaction of knowledge spillovers with future market oligopolistic competition that firms internalize while making decisions. We isolate the impact of each strategic ingredient by comparing four alternative market structures. [more ▼] Neutrophil-like HL-60 cells reacted to N -formyl- l -Methionyl- l -Leucyl- l -P henylalanine (f MLP) with a rise in the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2]i), NADPH oxidase activation, and increased superoxide anion (O2-) production. [Ca2+]i mobilization and superoxide production were largely dependent on extracellular calcium (Ca2+]e) and a capacitative calcium entry. The monomeric G-protein, Rac-1, regulates NADPH oxidase activity. We tested the effect of removal of Ca2+]e on Rac-1 plasma membrane sequestration and activation of NADPH oxidase using immunodetection and a double labelling fluorescent method. Results showed that Rac-1 activation is mediated via a pertussis toxin (PTX)-sensitive heteromeric G-protein pathway, and that Rac-1 membrane sequestration was preceded by [Ca2+]i mobilization following entry of Ca2+ e. Therefore, we propose that O2- production is dependent on activation of PTX-sensitive G-proteins and sequestration of Rac-1 in the plasma membrane, following entry of Ca2+ e.
