In this paper, we address the virtual network embedding (VNE) problem in non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) enabling dynamic changes in the virtual network function (VNF) deployment to maximize the service acceptance rate and service revenue. NTNs such as satellite networks involve highly dynamic topology and limited resources in terms of rate and power. VNE in NTNs is a challenge because a static strategy under-performs when new service requests arrive or the network topology changes unexpectedly due to failures or other events. Existing solutions do not consider the power constraint of satellites and rate limitation of inter-satellite links (ISLs) which are essential parameters for dynamic adjustment of existing VNE strategy in NTNs. In this work, we propose a dynamic VNE algorithm that selects a suitable VNE strategy for new and existing services considering the time-varying network topology. The proposed scheme, D-ViNE, increases the service acceptance ratio by 8.51% compared to the benchmark scheme TS-MAPSCH. [less ▲]

The purpose of this document is to review the requirements of the platform in terms of human factors issues that to be addressed, provide an update on the state of the art in augmented reality requirements and to provide an early technical specification. Addressing these issues will ensure that the platform can deliver its full potential when actually operated by the end-users. Indeed, a poorly designed system will not only reduce utility and acceptance of the platform but also induce discomfort and frustration. The document keeps the requirements at a general level as it does not support specific use-case implementations. Instead this document provides a list of general specifications and requirements that must be addressed in order for the eGlasses platform to be a success. [less ▲]

Risalendo ai tre testi principali – i romanzi di Giovanni di Arras (completato nel 1393), Coudrette (scritto poco dopo il 1401) e Thüring von Ringoltingen (scritto nel 1456) – questo articolo propugna il ritorno a una Melusina storicizzata ed epica. Né mostro solitario né vice del demonio, la madre dei Lusignani si comprende attraverso i suoi discendenti fatati: è tramite i suoi prodigiosi figli che rivela, al ritmo della narrazione, la sua verità. In ogni muscolo, in ogni deformità facciale, in ogni tratto di grandezza o di follia dei suoi dieci figli, emerge la presenza di Melusina. Il personaggio chiave della storia è Goffredo dal Grande Dente (Geoffroy la Grand-Dent), il suo sesto figlio: in una discesa agli inferi che è allo stesso tempo geologica e genealogica, egli scopre i segreti di famiglia e l’origine del male. Ritornando a questo motivo, ci proponiamo di restituire la singolarità della narrazione melusiniana: quella di un’intensa interrogazione sulla filiazione, da cui dipendono le moderne riflessioni sull’individuo e sulla famiglia, sulle pulsioni di vita e sull’istinto di morte. The goal of Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (M-WSN) is to sense a specific environment. A commonly considered objective is to organize the work of the sensors such that they monitor the environment as long as possible and cover a surface as large as possible. While most of the time this problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem we present a new decentralized approach for building a connected dominating set (CDS) coupled with attractive and repulsive forces for the movement of sensors in order to maintain the network connectivity. The approach is implemented as a hybrid decentralized algorithm: DACYCLEM (Decentralized Algorithm under Connectivity constraint with mobilitY for Coverage and LifEtime Maximization). The lifetime and the coverage achieved by our approach are the results of the local interactions between the sensors and were not obtained by the application of a direct optimization method. We also introduce a new metric, the speed of coverage, to evaluate the balance between coverage and lifetime. Finally, our simulation results show that one single parameter of DACYCLEM is responsible for the balancing between coverage and lifetime. [less ▲]

Emotional eating is conceptualized as eating in response to negative affect or distress and is discussed as a mechanism leading to eating binges. Recent evidence suggests that eating may not only be triggered by negative affect, but also ruminative thinking. We report results of an experience sampling study examining the role of rumination for emotional eating in 16 obese adolescents (M=15.5 years, S.D.=1.4; range 14-17, body mass index M = 31.1 kgm(-2), S.D.=5.5) under restricted dietary conditions. We hypothesized that daily hassles type of stress predicted the individuals' desire to eat, with the predictive value further increased when negative affect and rumination were accounted for. The results of mixed regression modeling were in line with our predictions, suggesting a significant contribution of ruminative thinking to the mechanisms of negative affect induced eating. [less ▲]

Abstract Background Previous prospective studies highlighted dairy intake as a risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly in men. It is unclear whether this association is causal or explained by reverse causation or confounding. Objective The aim is to examine the association between genetically predicted dairy intake and PD using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods We genotyped a well-established instrumental variable for dairy intake located in the lactase gene (rs4988235) within the Courage-PD consortium (23 studies; 9823 patients and 8376 controls of European ancestry). Results Based on a dominant model, there was an association between genetic predisposition toward higher dairy intake and PD (odds ratio [OR] per one serving per day = 1.70, 95 confidence interval = 1.12–2.60, P = 0.013) that was restricted to men (OR = 2.50 [1.37–4.56], P = 0.003; P-difference with women = 0.029). Conclusions Using MR, our findings provide further support for a causal relationship between dairy intake and higher PD risk, not biased by confounding or reverse causation. Further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. © 2022 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society [less ▲]
