Vertical Si p-MOSFETs with channel lengths of 100nm were fabricated using selective low pressure chemical vapour deposition (LPCVD) epitaxial growth and conventional i-line lithography. The layout, called VOXFET, reduces gate to source/drain overlap capacitances, thus improving high speed applications. Transistors with a gate width of 12 um and gate oxide thickness of 10nm show transconductances gM of 200mS/mm and measured cutoff frequencies of fT = 8.7GHz and fMAX = 19.2 GHz. [less ▲]

The aim of this paper is to take a look at the 1968 generation in West Germany about 40 years after the 1968 events. Whether there was a 1968 generation in the narrow sense of the word will be explored. While comparing the 1968 generation with earlier and later cohorts, political interest, political activity and (postmaterialist) values will be analysed. Education will be theorised as a main mechanism that distinguishes the 1968 generation from earlier generations. Quantitative analyses will be performed employing a temporal perspective and including age, period and cohort effects - so that socialisation as well as individual change over the life cycle and macro influences can be taken into account. The results show a strong influence of education on political interest, political activity and postmaterialism. Therefore, what is called the '1968 generation' only applies to the more highly educated people of this generation. [less ▲]

1alpha,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1alpha,25(OH)2D3), the activated vitamin D3 hormone, is a key regulator of calcium homeostasis and thereby indispensable for bone metabolism. In addition, 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 is known to mediate predominantly immunosuppressive responses in vitro and in vivo. It has been demonstrated that macrophages can produce 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 on activation with interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), although little is understood about the biologic significance of this response. We show here that 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 can selectively suppress key effector functions of IFN-gamma-activated macrophages. Among these are the suppression of listericidal activity, the inhibition of phagocyte oxidase-mediated oxidative burst, and the suppression of important IFN-gamma-induced genes, including Ccl5, Cxcl10, Cxcl9, Irf2, Fcgr1, Fcgr3, and Tlr2. The deactivation of IFN-gamma-stimulated macrophages is dependent on a functional vitamin D receptor and 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 acts specifically on IFN-gamma-activated macrophages, whereas the steroid has no effects on resting macrophages. Therefore, the 1alpha,25(OH)2D3-mediated suppression of macrophage functions is distinct from previously described macrophage deactivation mechanisms. In conclusion, our data indicate that the production of 1alpha,25(OH)2D3 by IFN-gamma-stimulated macrophages might be an important negative feedback mechanism to control innate and inflammatory responses of activated macrophages. The malaria parasite Plasmodium goes through two life stages in the human host, a non-symptomatic liver stage (LS) followed by a blood stage with all clinical manifestation of the disease. In this study, we investigated a series of 2-alkynoic fatty acids (2-AFAs) with chain lengths between 14 and 18 carbon atoms for dual in vitro activity against both life stages. 2-Octadecynoic acid (2-ODA) was identified as the best inhibitor of Plasmodium berghei parasites with ten times higher potency (IC50 = 0.34 μg/ml) than the control drug. In target determination studies, the same compound inhibited three Plasmodium falciparum FAS-II (PfFAS-II) elongation enzymes PfFabI, PfFabZ, and PfFabG with the lowest IC50 values (0.28-0.80 μg/ml, respectively). Molecular modeling studies provided insights into the molecular aspects underlying the inhibitory activity of this series of 2-AFAs and a likely explanation for the considerably different inhibition potentials. Blood stages of P. falciparum followed a similar trend where 2-ODA emerged as the most active compound, with 20 times less potency. The general toxicity and hepatotoxicity of 2-AFAs were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo methods in mammalian cell lines and zebrafish models, respectively. This study identifies 2-ODA as the most promising antiparasitic 2-AFA, particularly towards P. berghei parasites. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

The increasing part of renewable energy in the electricity production mix with its known fluctuations of wind and photovoltaic plants is leading to an enlarged discrepancy of production and consumption. Up to now the electricity production of biogas plants is more or less constant but could be used in future more to balance the energy production by using higher biogas storage capacity. An interesting alternative could be a 2 stage process. The 1st stage is operated at higher loadings and low pH where mainly substrate hydrolysis takes place and relatively small quantities of H2/CO2 gas are produced. The effluent shows high concentrations (total > 10 g FA/l) of mainly butyric and caproic acid which could easily and stable be temporarily stored in liquid-tanks. The transformation of the acidic intermediates from hydrolysis to biogas (and finally electricity) in the 2nd stage is faster compared to the traditional fermentation. The storage capacity for the acidic intermediates is more than 10 times smaller compared to the temporary storage of biogas. [less ▲]

[less ▲]
