Physical inactivity has become a major public health concern and, consequently, the awareness of striving for a healthy lifestyle has increased. As a result, the popularity of recreational sports, such as running, has increased. Running is known for its low threshold to start and its attractiveness for a heterogeneous group of people. Yet, one can still observe high drop-out rates among (novice) runners. To understand the reasons for drop-out as perceived by runners, we investigate potential reasons to quit running among short distance runners (5 km and 10 km) (n = 898). Data used in this study were drawn from the standardized online Eindhoven Running Survey 2016 (ERS16). Binary logistic regressions were used to investigate the relation between reasons to quit running and different variables like socio-demographic variables, running habits and attitudes, interests, and opinions (AIOs) on running. Our results indicate that, not only people of different gender and age show significant differences in perceived reasons to quit running, also running habits, (e.g., running context and frequency) and AIOs are related to perceived reasons to quit running too. With insights into these related variables, potential drop-out reasons could help health professionals in understanding and lowering drop-out rates among recreational runners. [less ▲]

How do foreigners, who come to Luxembourg for work, discover the city through sport? This is one of the questions asked during ethnographic research focusing on a sports group in two research organisations employing a large percentage of foreigners. The inductive approach of grounded theory was developed for the exploration of the working migrants’ sensitive experience of integration into the new country. The concepts of interaction and integration, borrowed from the Chicago School, were the theoretical tools for analysis of the data collected through observations, interviews, and maps of the working environments. The article discusses the integration of its members into the city, as well as their interaction with the spaces outside their work in various degrees and explores how, through the sports group at work, foreigners working in the country discover places that are otherwise limited to outside of their working space. The analysis concludes by showing how running in/with the group serves as a medium through which people interact with the city and its history and build their own story in the city. [less ▲]

Saarland is a federal state in western Germany, with strong cross-border links to the neighbouring countries of Luxembourg and northeastern France. The region is characterized by globalization processes, a very strong European cross-border integration process as well as internal regionalization processes. The region has a restructuring industrial economy, from coal and steel to a more diversified economy. It is an urbanized region and includes the city of Saarbrücken, which is also the state capital. Saarland is located in the so-called ‘Greater Region’, a term used to identify the transfrontier region Saar-Lor-Lux that contains the regions of Saarland, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia. The formerly used term ‘Saar-Lor-Lux’ referred primarily (since 1969) to the industrialized borderland of Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg. Drawing from the regional distinctions between several European case study regions we can also recognise segmentation of specific local areas and identify how social distinctions within a region, for example between locals and migrants in Saarland, can downgrade relationships between both groups of people. Another focus of the research presented in this chapter is the arrangement of support for regional learning and innovation in rural Saarland with regard to globalization and regionalization. Learning and innovation are very important for rural regions because they develop capacities, knowledge and skills, which are especially needed in economically poor border regions like Saarland. Grassroots initiatives in Saarland therefore, help provide people in rural areas with new information, knowledge and skills as well as facilitate and support different stakeholders in learning to work together, to network and to reach a collective development aim. Globalisation is a ubiquitous influence in rural Europe, offering both opportunities and challenges. The liberalisation of travel restrictions, in addition to the growth and development of transport and global communication networks, have contributed to international mobility that promotes patterns of migration, return migration and repeat emigration from/into rural regions. Return migration in particular, represents a stimulating field of research, which is as though provoking as it is diverse. In some regions, migrants return to their native country to play a pivotal role in the economic, social, and cultural vibrancy of a local rural community, while in others, migrants find themselves excluded and isolated. Investigating this diversity of experience, this paper presents analysis of findings from research carried out as part of the FP7 DERREG project. Thirty-six biographies of return migrants (from the West of Ireland and Alytus County, Lithuania) were generated; allowing an understanding of how various life trajectories develop; reasons behind decisions; feelings regarding relocation and reintegration and, experiences of returning to a rural location. Drawing on transnationalism and social network theory, this paper reveals the complexity of contemporary return migration experiences and the similarities and diversities that exist between Western and Eastern Europe. Key issues to emerge include the context dependency of return migrant behaviour and their further life choices, integration and, the shift in migrant value priority scale from economic to social values.
