We definitely live in an increasingly urban World for half of humanity now lives in cities. Cities provide wealth but also negatively impact the environment and the health of citizens. Arguably the benefits and costs of cities relate to both their size, in population terms, and their internal structure, in terms of the relative spatial arrangement of built-up and natural land. Much of urban research focusses on very large cities and urban cores. Yet 3 urban human out of 4 live in cities of less than 4 million inhabitants (according to the global GHSL dataset). Similarly, 3 out of 4 in a typical (European) city do not live in its core but beyond (using a 7-8km radius to define core for a city like London or Paris). To address urban sustainability issues and design adaptation policies, these 75% certainly count and, we can argue, also deserve specific attention because of the relative proximity between urban and non-urban (natural) use that smaller cities and suburban (non-core) areas may permit. In this respect, it is key to understand how the internal structure of cities, in particular the form and density of built-up areas and the interwoven green space emerge out of the core up until the fringe. It is also key to understand whether the form of cities, especially density gradients and the share of urbanised/non-urbanised land change with city size. In this talk we draw lessons from 2 research approaches to urban forms: one theoretical that uses spatial micro-economic simulations, and one empirical that uses spatially detailed land use datasets. Our theoretical simulations relate individual behaviour to urban forms while our empirics relate urban forms to city size. Both have in common a radial perspective to cities, i.e. explicitly or implicitly assuming that the accessibility trade-off to a given centre is a key determinant of locations and land uses. In both cases, we look at urbanisation and green space structures and at pollution exposure as an example of impact. [less ▲]

The Schumpeterian Hypothesis has been subject to a plethora of research aiming at the provision of new insights to the relationship of innovation on firm size. Utilizing a panel of German companies in manufacturing industries from 1993-2011, this analysis explicitly distinguishes between radical and incremental innovation output. It reveals that firm size and radical innovation share an overall negative relationship, while the relationship between firm size and incremental innovation is positive. These results provide a novel explanation for the often-reported non-linear relationship between firm size and innovation. [less ▲]

We seek to trouble the construct of radical listening through an interpretive analysis of our work in a collaborative research project with primary school teachers. At the heart of this project is a focus on researching together with the study participants. During two years, we worked with a group of teachers in a “teacher inquiry group”, which sought to shed light on the possibilities of using narrative assessment approaches as an inclusive tool for teaching and learning science. The original goal of the study was to empower teachers to utilize a variety of dialogic assessment tools as tools for learning with their students. Through a guiding focus on radical listening and dialogue, the design of this overall study shifted and changed over time to fit the needs of the different stakeholders, and our focus on narrative assessment approaches also evolved over time. We will use different examples to illustrate the interactions of the teacher inquiry group, and also draw on our own work within our research group to complexify what it means to “listen”, learn from, and “dialogue” with others. Next–generation of satellite communication (SatCom) networks are expected to support extremely high data rates for a seamless integration into future large satellite-terrestrial networks. In view of the coming spectral limitations, the main challenge is to reduce the cost (satellite launch and operation) per bit, which can be achieved by enhancing the spectral efficiencies. In addition, the capability to quickly and flexibly assign radio resources according to the traffic demand distribution has become a must for future multibeam broadband satellite systems. This article presents the radio resource management problems encountered in the design of future broadband SatComs and provides a comprehensive overview of the available techniques to address such challenges. Firstly, we focus on the demand matching formulation of the power and bandwidth assignment. Secondly, we present the scheduling design in practical multibeam satellite systems. Finally, a number of future challenges and the respective open research topics are described. [less ▲]

Zuerst die Angliederung an Belgien im Jahr 1920. Dann die Annexion durch Deutschland im Mai 1940. Und letztlich die Rückkehr in den belgischen Staat im Jahr 1945. Auch für die Menschen brachten diese Jahre zahlreiche Veränderungen mit sich: Was richtig gewesen war, konnte nach dem nächsten Wendepunkt falsch sein. Wer davor zur Elite gehörte, konnte nach dem nächsten Systemwechsel ausgeschlossen sein. Die meisten Bewohner zwischen Göhl und Our durchlebten in diesen Zeiten ein hohes Maß an Spannungen. Dazu gehörte auch die Frage nach Schuld und Verantwortung, die immer wieder unterschiedlich beantwortet wurde [less ▲]

In Episode sieben der Sendereihe "100 Jahre Ostbelgien" behandeln die Historiker Andreas Fickers und Christoph Brüll den Ausbau der Autonomie für die deutschsprachigen Belgier im Zuge der verschiedenen Staatsreformen. Seit den 1970er Jahren bringt der flämisch-wallonische Konflikt stetig neue Staatsreformen hervor. Die Atempausen zwischen den Umbauphasen vom Einheitsstaat zum Bundesstaat wurden dabei immer kürzer. Die Deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft hatte und hat auf diese Entwicklungen keinen entscheidenden Einfluss. Sie erweitert ihre Befugnisse „im Windschatten“ der beiden großen Sprachgruppen. Eine Frage hat den Autonomieausbau dabei von Anfang an begleitet: Sind diese Befugnisübertragungen für ein Gebiet mit knapp 80.000 Einwohnern überhaupt verkraftbar? [less ▲]
