The present investigation focused on cultural identity and the dealing with the belonging to different cultural frames as a migrant in a highly culturally diverse context by comparing two generations of Portuguese families living in Luxembourg. Quantitative standardized questionnaires complemented by in-depth qualitative interviews with parent-child dyads were used in order to assess possible (dis)similarities between first generation Portuguese immigrant parents and their adult children (i.e. second generation) concerning their cultural identities. Generational differences were found regarding the dealing with several cultural frames, language competences and attachment to both discussed cultures. Adult children were more prone to find themselves in a “compatible” identity orientation, compared to the parental generation. Yet, when focussing specifically on the second generation, qualitative data highlighted some issues regarding the perceived views of others on one’s own cultural belonging and the perception of a certain sense of cultural identity denial from others. Our findings contribute to the existing theoretical literature on cultural identity by elucidating some major differences between immigrant parents and their adult children on how they enact the sense of belonging and the dealing with multiple cultural frames on a daily-life basis. Migration is a key topic of the contemporary world, so is the concept of cultural identity that has gained more importance with the growing culturally diverse societies. Here, children of migrants usually find themselves in a particular situation as they are confronted to different value systems and cultures. How do these so-called second generation children experience and construct their identities growing up in a diverse cultural context? In the present study, we will have a closer look at aspects of acculturation of Portuguese migrant families living in Luxembourg by use of a standardized questionnaire (n = 55 PT migrant triads) and qualitative interviews (n = 10 migrant family dyads). We will focus on the dealing with multiple cultural identities, cultural attachment to host and home country. We will therefore compare first and second generations from PT migrant families to assess differences or similarities in their identity constructions in the Luxembourgish multicultural arena. Subjective age, how old people feel compared to their chronological age, is a central indicator of age identity and highly predictive for developmental outcomes. While mostly used as a trait-like concept in previous research, recent studies employing experimental designs and daily assessments suggest that subjective age can vary after experimental manipulations or between days. However, less is known about whether subjective age varies over even shorter time frames such as within moments on a given day, how such short-term variability differs by age and its association with trait subjective age. We examined these questions with data obtained from 123 young–old (Mage = 67.19 years) and 47 old–old adults (Mage = 86.59 years) who reported their momentary subjective age six times a day over 7 consecutive days as they were going about their everyday lives. Participants felt younger on a large majority of occasions, and 25% of the total variability in subjective age could be attributed to within-person variation. Within-person variability in subjective age amounted to an average of about 3 years from one moment to the next and did not differ between age groups. However, those with younger trait subjective ages exhibited larger moment-to-moment variation. Our findings extend the literature on subjective age by showing that how old people feel can vary on a momentary basis and that state and trait components of subjective age are related. Further research should investigate the contextual predictors of variability in subjective age and the links between trait and state concepts and developmental outcomes. [less ▲]

Android applications may leak privacy data carelessly or maliciously. In this work we perform inter-component data-flow analysis to detect privacy leaks between components of Android applications. Unlike all current approaches, our tool, called IccTA, propagates the context between the components, which improves the precision of the analysis. IccTA outperforms all other available tools by reaching a precision of 95.0% and a recall of 82.6% on DroidBench. Our approach detects 147 inter-component based privacy leaks in 14 applications in a set of 3000 real-world applications with a precision of 88.4%. With the help of ApkCombiner, our approach is able to detect inter-app based privacy leaks. [less ▲]

Improving the usability and adoption of secure (i.e. end-to-end encrypted) email systems has been a notorious challenge for over two decades. One of the open questions concerns the amount and format of information that should be communicated to users to inform them of the security and privacy properties with respect to different messages or correspondents. Contributing to the ongoing discussion on the usability and effectiveness of security and privacy indicators, particularly in the context of systems targeting non-expert users, this paper sheds light on users' evaluation of traffic light-inspired indicators, as a metaphor to represent different privacy states and guarantees, provided by a new system for email end-to-end encryption called p≡p. Using a mixed-methods approach, based on input gathered from 150 participants in three online studies, we highlight the pros and cons of the traffic light semantic in p≡p's context and beyond, and discuss the potential implications on the perceived security and use of such systems. Flaka Haliti. I see a Face. Do you see a Face. Flaka Haliti, winner of the Henkel Art.Award 2013 takes an analytic approach to society and media in her work, and refers in particular to her own experiences as an interloper between different countries andcultures. The artist, who was born 1982, lives and works in her homecity of Prishtina and also in Munich and Vienna. By contrasting an installation of imitated concrete walls with a photo series of cloud motifs including computer drawn faces, Haliti constructs a spatial scenario that is both menacingly narrow and constricted and that also seems to offer an open a broad perspective. A further work looks at interpersonal relationship between proximity and distance under the condition of the media world, in a video installation about long-distance realtionships in the internet. The exhibition titel "I see a Face. Do you see a Face." is taken from the photo series with cloud motifs and poses a question that is formulated so that it can also be taken as a statement of fact, In this deliberate dissolution of all clear parameters and ascription. Flaka Haliti emphasizes her interest in initiating games between reality and fiction, and imaginary proximitiy and spatial distance. [less ▲]

It is often said that the entrepreneurs of today are the family businesses of tomorrow. This assertion is supported by findings in a Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (2019-20) Report on ‘Family Entrepreneurship’ which cites that 75% of respondent entrepreneurs across 48 economies indicate that their family was actively involved in either starting or developing a new business . In spite of this, and the fact that it is becoming more popular for family firms to encourage entrepreneurialism within the younger generation, it is often challenging for Next Gens to ‘carve out’ an entrepreneurial identity for themselves. This is even more so the case if the intention is to pursue new ideas that are not central to the core business and which might disturb long-planned succession strategies, or expectations held by senior family members. Making the decision to get on board the entrepreneur(ship) is an important career decision that has huge implications, not only for the Next Gens who are planning this, but also for current members of the family business who might have to adjust their expectations. How does homeownership magnify existing gender disparities in the labor markets of the rich OECD countries? Men and women, and especially mothers and fathers, respond to homeownership differently. Owners work more hours than renters but mothers experience an ownership penalty while fathers solidify their market attachment. Both responses increase the gender gap. As such, governments pursuing dual policy objectives of promoting homeownership and greater gender parity in the labor market will find their policies working at cross-purposes. This paper analyzes the effect of homeownership on labor market attachment and explains why mothers and fathers respond to it in different ways. [less ▲]
