[more ▼] The edited book ‘Jews or Germans?’ seeks to explore the post-war expulsion of the German minority, which did not involve only Nazi adherents and ideologists. To a certain extent, the entire process of displacement should not be apprehended solely from national or ethnic perspectives with clearly defined categories. In this sense, the project aims to problematize the established view of Jewish emigration history. [more ▼] Public announcement logic (PAL) is a simple dynamic epistemic logic extending reasoning about knowledge of agents with a modal operator for simultaneous and transparent knowledge updates. This logic is no more expressive than epistemic logic (EL) without updates, but exhibits compact representation of a number of complex epistemic situations. A labeled tableau proof system to reason with these updates directly is presented here. This system can analyse and present well-known epistemic puzzles like `muddy children' and `three wise men'. Using the KE tableau system as a basis, the modal and propositional characteristics of epistemic updates can be separated. [more ▼] Influenced by on the one hand the governmentality studies in social work/social pedagogy and on the other hand by neo-institutional and power sensitive approaches in organizational research, in the last decade, research on institutional rationalities has become of eminent interest in social work re- search. The heuristic concept of ”rationality” aims at an analysis of practices and rules, that construct a difference between the legitimate and the illegitimate. It focuses on the reconstruction of knowl- edge. Organizations of public welfare production have to legitimate their practices, interventions and affordances thus referring to institutions as sets of legitimate ways to do things. My paper is based on the result of a recently finished empirical research project situated in the field of young people’s transitions to work. This study about talk-in-interaction in German Job Centers (project funded by the German Research Foundation, 2008–2011; University of Hildesheim) is based on a data corpus that consists of 52 transcripts of talks between professionals and clients/customers and additional 15 interviews with the personal advisors. The clients were all under 25 years old and receiving financial help. There backgrounds are very diverse, concerning their formal education degrees, their living situations, and some of them were still in the school system. We analyzed the transcripts of talk with conversation analyses and membership categorization analyses. The project team has reconstructed a rationality pattern that is oriented to the question how a case can be processed in the existing help schemes and institutional frames, and how a working consen- sus can be kept despite potential conflicts in interaction. Starting from these results, in my paper, I will go a step further and ask, what is the unsaid and the invisible in this pattern of rationality, and with which consequences. [more ▼] BACKGROUND: The involuntary capture of attention by pain may, to some extent, be controlled by psychological variables. In this paper, we investigated the effect of attentional set (i.e., the collection of task-related features that a person is monitoring in order to successfully pursue a goal) on pain. METHODS: Two experiments are reported in which the task relevance of the modality and spatial location of a target stimulus was manipulated. In both experiments, somatosensory and auditory stimuli were presented on each trial. In experiment 1, 29 participants were cued on each trial to localize either a somatosensory or an auditory target. In experiment 2, 37 participants were cued on each trial to identify either a somatosensory or an auditory target at a particular location. RESULTS: In experiment 1, self-reported pain intensity and unpleasantness were reduced when participants had to localize the auditory target. The location of the painful stimulus relative to the location of the auditory target did not affect pain. In experiment 2, again, pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings were reduced when participants identified the auditory target. Now, the location of the painful stimulus relative to the location of the auditory target moderated the effect. Pain intensity was less when the painful stimulus was at a different location than the auditory target. CONCLUSIONS: Results are discussed in terms of the attentional set hypothesis, and we argue that the effectiveness of distraction tasks depends on the degree to which the task-relevant features of the distraction task are distinct from pain-related features. [more ▼] According to the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Green Economy Report (2011), energy consumption of buildings in most of the industrialized countries accounts for around one-third of greenhouse gas emissions. The building sector also consumes more than a third of global resources and contributes by about 40 % to solid waste streams (mainly through demolition but also construction) in developed countries (UNEP 2011, p. 341). But while having been identified as the single largest contributor to human-related greenhouse gas emissions, the sector is also considered to hold the greatest potential to lower emissions based on the relatively low case of retrofitting existing or constructing new buildings (IPCC 2014). Following the realization of these potentials, the last years have witnessed the emergence of a green building agenda in many countries across the globe including technical and organizational innovations in the conception of single buildings (both residential and commercial) as well as enlarged approaches to the role and impact of the built environment in cities including neighbourhood and public infrastructures planning. The sector’s dynamic is partly caused and sustained by a high commitment of public authorities (e.g., via co-funding or tax exemption schemes) and seconded by the involvement of semi-public agencies (e.g., municipal building corporations, energy agencies, public housing services, vocational learning centres). Although the main focus is on low carbon objectives and energy efficiency, social objectives are also present mainly by acknowledging user interactions with their built environment around questions of health and quality of life.
