[more ▼] The present paper investigates translanguaging practices and types of talk of 6 to 8 year-old multilinguals who record texts on the App iTEO in Luxembourg. ITEO enables users to record and edit oral text, to listen to recordings and to structure the recording process. The automatic playback materializes the language and provides opportunities for reflection. The collective process of recording and transforming texts presents children with opportunities to use exploratory talk proven to stimulate learning (Mercer 2000, 2004). Our qualitative longitudinal study focuses on the use of iTEO for teaching and learning languages in nursery and primary schools (http://storying.bsce.uni.lu/). The study’s multi-method approach, with data collected over two years, includes: observations of activities involving iTEO, video recording of children`s storying, interviews with all participants and the collection of documents. The data analysis followed the principles of Grounded Theory (Charmaz 2006, Strauss & Corbin 1990) and was assisted by the programme Nvivo. Findings have shown that children develop linguistic and metalinguistic competences and that they translanguage regularly while working with iTEO (Gretsch 2014, Kirsch & Gretsch, 2015). In this paper, we discuss a case study of children in the first grades of primary school with the following purposes: 1. To identify instances of translanguaging; 2. To analyze the different kinds of discourse emerging during the co-construction of text on iTEO; and 3. To show how these contribute to learning. We argue that iTEO creates a translanguaging space (García & Wei 2014), where children can draw on their entire repertoire in order to learn. Embedded in multilingual pedagogies, iTEO helps learners to co-construct linguistic knowledge through different types of talk. The results of our case study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the ways in which multilingual children translanguage and use different types of talk in autonomous, collaborative and computer-assisted activities. [more ▼] Luxembourg’s multilingualism and multiculturalism are reflected both in its trilingual education system and its diverse school population. However, despite the official policy of trilingualism, language learning programmes tend to be underpinned by a monoglossic view that sees languages as autonomous skills that need to be developed separately. Statistics have repeatedly shown that ethnic minority children, 48% of the school population, underachieve. In response, the ministry of Education has developed approaches to further the development of multiple languages. However, these are neither sufficiently specific nor systematic. Our project addresses the need for the development of appropriate didactics and of innovative strategies to cope with the diversity and heterogeneity in Luxembourg’s schools. We believe in working with rather than against the diversity of the school population and base our understanding of language learning on sociocultural theories. We investigate how young children of ethnic minority background learn Luxembourgish, German and French through collaborative storytelling on the iPAD App iTEO and how teachers support their learning with this new technology. The App iTEO is a learning-and-teaching tool that records and edits language. It structures the learning process, mediates language learning and promotes metalinguistic awareness. Findings of the pilot study have shown that the tool facilitates children’s collaborative, exploratory and open-ended language learning and allows children to draw on their diverse language repertoires and to deploy a range of strategies. In line with recent findings in literature, we suggest that mobile learning systems benefit from a criteria-based iterative design and development process that incorporates evaluation results of mobile learning scenarios based on school curricula. Underlying these scenarios is a holistic, socio-technical system view, which makes allowance for the complex dynamics between teachers, students, researchers, the multiplicity of contextual factors, and the specifications and requirements of the digital devices and applications, as well as their interrelations. Five school project scenarios are described, as well as the evaluation process involved that served as an integral part in creating a dynamic optimization process for the design and development of digital and interactive systems that follow efficiency criteria for mobile learning (i.e., construction, contextualization, communication, and control). In addition, we argue that mobile systems should also allow for users’ or students’ participatory activities in the preparation phase to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor learning. Ideally, a stable equilibrium flow pattern should result from the interaction between control and route choice on a long-term horizon. This paper proposes an iterative learning approach for designing signal controls able to attract the system to equilibrium in an acceptable convergence speed. The traffic assignment model and combined traffic assignment and control problem are first introduced. An iterative learning control (ILC) based signal control is formulated and a basic model inversion method is analyzed. To deal with the nonlinearity of traffic system, a Newton based ILC algorithm is applied.
