Integrating massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) into satellite network is regarded as an effective strategy to improve the spectral efficiency as well as the coverage of satellite communication. However, the inevitable intra-system and inter-system interference deteriorate the total performance of system. In this paper, we consider precoding in the 5G Satellite Integrated Network (5GSIN) with the deployment of Massive MIMO and propagation of shared millimeter-wave (mmWave) link. Taking the requirements of both frequency efficiency and energy assumption into account, a hybrid analog and digital pre-coding scheme in the specific scenario of 5GSIN is proposed. We model sum rate maximization problem for both of satellite and terrestrial system that incorporates maximum power constrains and minimum achievable rate requirements and formulate to a convex power allocation problem with Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) norm and Logarithmic Linearization method. In order to balance between performance and complexity, we propose an analog and digital separated hybrid precoding algorithm to mitigate intra-system interference. Moreover, an iterative power allocation with interference mitigation algorithm is also devised to mitigate interference from satellite to terrestrial link so that power allocation can be executed by generalized iterative algorithm. Simulation results show that our proposed hybrid precoding algorithm in 5GSIN can improve the overall spectral efficiency with a small amount of iterations. [less ▲]

Recent advances in Milimeter wave (mmWave) band mobile communications may provide solutions to the increasing traffic demand in modern wireless systems. Even though mmWave bands are scarcely occupied, the design of a prospect transceiver should guarantee the efficient coexistence with the incumbent services in these bands. To that end, in this paper, two underlay cognitive transceiver designs are proposed based on a hybrid Analog/Digital transceiver architecture that enables the mmWave spectrum access while controlling the interference to the incumbent users with low hardware complexity and power consumption. The first cognitive solution designs a codebook free cognitive hybrid pre-coder by maximizing the mutual information between its two ends subject to interference, power and hardware constraints related to the analog counterpart. The second solution is codebook based and exhibits less complexity than the first one at the cost of inferior spectral efficiency. A novel codebook free solution for the post-coder at the cognitive receiver part is further proposed, based on a hardware constrained Minimum Mean Square Error criterion. Simulations study the performance of both the proposed hybrid approaches and compare it to the one of a fully digital solution for typical wireless environments. [less ▲]

Hybrid Analog/Digital (A/D) pre-/post-coding solutions aim at the reduction of the hardware complexity and power consumption of a system employed with a large-scale antenna array functioning in the millimeter (mmWave) band. This is achieved by enabling the transceiver design with fewer Radio Frequency (RF) chains than antennas. In this work, hybrid A/D transceiver designs are developed for a relay assisted mmWave system that aims at data transmission from a source to a destination node via the well-known amplify-and-forward cooperative protocol. To that end, hybrid solutions are proposed for the joint design of the source and relay nodes precoders and for the destination ones, as well. Contrariwise to existing literature approaches that develop codebook-based solutions and exhibit limitations on the performance, the proposed approaches are codebook-free and present significantly improved spectral efficiency, as it is verified via the presented simulations. This paper argues for a hybrid approach to historical research that combines ’traditional’ with digital hermeneutical approaches in a new practice of doing history. As the digital turn alters and affects all parts of the historical research process, this is a pressing challenge and need for all historians, not just for those engaged in ‘big data’ projects. Indeed, hybridity is, and should be, the new normal. Yet while most historians are accustomed to deploying digital approaches in the information gathering stage of their research, they often refrain from ‘going digital’ in its processing and especially analysis stages. Describing a number of digital tools used in work done on the diaries of Anne frank, the paper critically analyses and demonstrates the added value of incorporating them in all stages of historical research. Digital approaches enhance the methodological repertoire furnished by ‘traditional’ close reading practices. Hybrid approaches thus expand our intellectual horizons and the analytical power we bring to bear upon our sources. [less ▲]

The intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technique to extend wireless coverage. In this letter, the performance of the hybrid automatic repeat request (hybrid ARQ) for an IRS‐assisted system is analysed. More specifically, the outage performance of the IRS‐aided system using hybrid ARQ protocol with chase combining is studied. The asymptotic analysis also shows that the outage performance is better and improves linearly by increasing the number of reflectors of the IRS‐aided system. The results also verify the potential of combining the ARQ scheme in the link layer of the IRS‐aided system and demonstrate that a very small change of path loss condition can impact the performance largely. Spectrum Sensing (SS) and underlay have been considered as two important techniques for enabling the spectral coexistence of the licensed and unlicensed wireless communication systems. The SS only approach ignores the interference tolerance capability of the Primary Users (PUs) while assuming the bursty PU traffic whereas the possibility of having secondary transmission with full power is neglected in an underlay based approach. To address this, it’s crucial to investigate suitable hybrid spectrum awareness and transmission strategies which can overcome the aforementioned drawbacks and achieve higher secondary throughput while protecting the PUs. In this context, we propose a hybrid cognitive transceiver which combines the SS approach with the power control based underlay approach. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid approach considering both periodic sensing and simultaneous sensing/transmission schemes. Moreover, sensing-throughput tradeoff for the proposed hybrid approach is investigated and the performance is compared with the conventional SS only approaches in terms of the achievable throughput. It is shown that the proposed scheme can achieve a significant improvement in the secondary throughput over the conventional approaches while respecting the interference constraints of the PUs. In this paper, we study various parallelization schemes for the Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) metaheuristic on a CPU-GPU system via OpenMP and OpenACC. A hybrid parallel VNS method is applied to recent benchmark problem instances for the multi-product dynamic lot sizing problem with product returns and recovery, which appears in reverse logistics and is known to be NP-hard. The modification of erythrocyte membrane properties provides a new tool towards improved drug delivery and biomedical applications. The fabrication of hybrid erythrocyte liposomes is presented by doping red blood cell membranes with synthetic lipid molecules of different classes (PC, PS, PG) and different degrees of saturation (14:0, 16:0-18:1). The respective solubility limits are determined, and material properties of the hybrid liposomes are studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction, epi-fluorescent microscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), Zeta potential, UV-vis spectroscopy, and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Membrane thickness and lipid orientation can be tuned through the addition of phosphatidylcholine lipids. The hybrid membranes can be fluorescently labelled by incorporating Texas-red DHPE, and their charge modified by incorporating phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylglycerol. By using fluorescein labeled dextran as an example, it is demonstrated that small molecules can be encapsulated into these hybrid liposomes. [less ▲]

In media historiography, there have generally been two approaches to historicize past media technologies and their practices. Whereas media historians generally focus on historical changes by maintaining a diachronic perspective on how media technologies and practices develop over time, media archaeologists commonly adopt a synchronic perspective in (re)constructing parallel or alternative histories. This chapter aims to explore and propose a third approach to media historiography, which departs from the notion of “hybridity”: the intermingling and co-existence of old and new media technologies, user practices, and discourses as evolving in an ongoing process. Building on some of the empirical and conceptual results of my research on the home movie as a twentieth-century family memory practice, I develop the argument that a “hybrid media historiography” enables one to grasp the complex interrelations and dynamics between media technologies, user practices, and discourses in more precise and comprehensive ways by maintaining both a diachronic and synchronic perspective in studying media transitions. By looking specifically at how the transition from amateur film to home video gradually constituted a new home movie dispositif in the 1970s and 1980s, I will underline the heuristic potential of hybridity as analytical lens in media historical research.
