[more ▼] The neuropeptide substance P, the venom peptide mastoparan and the synthetic polyamine compound 48/80 activate rat peritoneal mast cells, leading to rapid histamine release by exocytosis. Although these effects are inhibited by pertussis toxin and involve a transient increase in IP3, no selective membrane receptors have been identified. However, it has recently been shown that these compounds activate G proteins in vitro. Here Yves Landry and colleagues discuss the proposal that direct activation of G protein is the physiological mechanism of action of substance P on rat peritoneal mast cells, this mechanism being mimicked by mastoparan and 48/80, and possibly by other cationic amphiphilic peptides such as kinins. These compounds might be of help in defining the interaction between membrane receptors and G proteins. [more ▼] The molecular mechanism of action of several non-immunological histamine releasers has been investigated using pertussis toxin which interfers, via ADP-ribosylation, with some G-proteins. Pertussis toxin (100 ng/ml) inhibited histamine release induced by compound 48/80, substance P, mastoparan, peptide 401, bradykinin and spermine showing that a G-protein sensitive to pertussis toxin was involved in the non-immunological histamine release. All these compounds directly activate purified G-proteins. The sensitivity to pertussis toxin of this direct stimulatory effect was demonstrated for compound 48/80, mastoparan and substance P. Altogether these results suggest that a direct activation of G-protein might be the molecular mechanism of action of histamine secretagogues acting through a pertussis toxin sensitive G-protein and in this way mimic agonist-ligand receptor interaction. [more ▼] The authors report on the fabrication and characterization of photodetectors based on nitrogen-ion-implanted GaAs and the annealing dynamics in these devices. An energy of 400 keV was used to implant N ions in a GaAs substrate at an ion concentration of 1 1016 cm−2. Dark current measurements as well as measurements under illumination show that the material properties rapidly change during the annealing process. Photodetectors based on nitrogen-implanted GaAs materials with annealing temperatures up to 400 °C exhibit a subpicosecond carrier lifetime up to 0.6 ps. These properties make nitrogen-ion-implanted GaAs an ideal material for ultrafast photodetectors, as alternative to low-temperature-grown GaAs. [more ▼] This article deals with the emergence of a group of professional automobile pilots in Europe during the Interwar period. During the time, automobile racing was institutionalised and commercialised to a previously unknown extent, under the supervision of European automobile clubs, industrial groups and journalists. In this context, by following the trajectories of pilots, we study the conditions for exercising this practice – part sport, part social activity. These trajectories are mainly marked by a wide diversity due to the sport’s origins, at the crossroads of changes in bourgeois leisure activities and the unprecedented development of the automobile industry. On the roads and race tracks of Europe, racing team pilots came up against wealthy independent racers, forming a stratified population and a wide range of participants with diverse origins, mobility, motivations and compensation. In the representations of the period, the pilots became the icons of the triumph of the automobile, but they nevertheless took second stage to the industrial groups that employed and equipped them. In this European space that was driven across and appropriated, behind the sports competition that acted as a support, this situation gave rise to large-scale industrial competitions and strategies that benefited the sportsmen but also held them captive. [more ▼] Caring for a close person involves and impacts several aspects and domains of personal life. A scenario that is often sketched here indicates that caring is physically exhausting, demanding time, leaving no time for leisure, and excluding the carer from further social activities. In this view, caring is strain as it is clearly described by the concept of caregiver burden, and a risk for the psychological and/or physical health of family carers. But caring may also have another side of positive gratification and of fulfilment. To care for another person may represent a meaningful work for both the cared for and the caring person that may also go along with recognition and positive feedback from others. This is the starting point of the present study that addressed a sample of 151 informal carers (n = 111 female) with a mean age of 58 years (SD=14 years) with self-report questionnaire. The measure offered in a first part positive (n=35) and negative aspects (n=23) of caring for a close person and subjects had to rate how much they agree that these aspects are present in their own care giving relationship. Moreover, life satisfaction as well as positive and negative affect were assessed in a second part. Multivariate analyses by factor as well as cluster analyses showed different profiles of gains and losses that were systematically linked to indicators of subjective well-being. Findings will be discussed with respect to their implications for psychosocial intervention in the field of informal care.
