In this thesis, a strong multiplicity one theorem for Katz modular forms is studied. We show that a cuspidal Katz eigenform which admits an irreducible Galois representation is in the level and weight old space of a uniquely associated Katz newform. We also set up multiplicity one results for Katz eigenforms which have reducible Galois representation. [less ▲]

The scheduling of parallel tasks is a topic that has received a lot of attention in recent years, in particular, due to the development of larger HPC clusters. It is regarded as an interesting problem because when combined with performant hardware, it ensures fast and efficient computing. However, it comes with a cost. The growing number of HPC clusters entails a greater global energy consumption which has a clear negative environmental impact. A green solution is thus required to find a compromise between energy-saving and high-performance computing within those clusters. In this paper, we evaluate the use of malleable jobs and idle servers powering off as a way to reduce both jobs mean stretch time and servers average power consumption. Malleable jobs have the particularity that the number of allocated servers can be changed during runtime. We present an energy-aware greedy algorithm with Particle Swarm Optimised parameters as a possible solution to schedule malleable jobs. An in-depth evaluation of the approach is then outlined using results from a simulator that was developed to handle malleable jobs. The results show that the use of malleable tasks can lead to an improved performance in terms of power consumption. We believe that our results open the door for further investigations on using malleable jobs models coupled with the energy-saving aspect. [less ▲]

Luxembourg camp literature has its literary roots in the literature of prisoners of war and prisoners of war of the First World War. During their Soviet imprisonment from 1943 to 1953, the Luxembourg conscripts continued a tradition of documentarism that did not want to create fictional narrative worlds, but instead focused exclusively on what they had experienced themselves. A large part of the texts left behind is also not literature that was written for a larger audience. They have often been published by the authors themselves. Autobiographies, memoirs and a few volumes of poetry (Faber, Bausch, Schauss) were published, some decades later. A fictional play by the former prisoner of war Joseph Schmit has not been printed to this day. Numerous ego documents, as the research of contemporary history calls them today, have also been preserved - private, handwritten texts of a personal nature. Such material will be the primary focus of this paper. The range of Luxembourgish texts to be examined from the Soviet camp ranges from smuggled notes and letters that released comrades brought to Luxembourg, through diaries, speeches and self-made dictionaries to poems and stories, some of which were in the camp and some immediately after their return Tambov and other Soviet camps emerged. While the earth usually represents the element in which cultural attachment is rooted, water on the contrary reveals what exceeds or interpenetrates the land. The liquid element is as ambiguous as it is proteiform: vital and destructive at the same time, it sometimes is a figure of liberation, sometimes of tragic dissolution. In a corpus of Luxembourgish novels from the early 20th century, this paper will analyse the depictions of water, mostly in its opposition with the soil, in order to question the meaning of the liquid element in a context where, corollary to social, economic and political changes, the earth is generally dominant in discourse and imagination. If nature has mostly been confined to the local and cultural landscape, an eco-material reading highlights on the contrary a global and crossborder dimension inherent to nature, but also to culture, disregarding the map-drawn boundaries that define the individual and the collective. Finally, a sensitive, anthropoetical reading also challenges historical, contextual and fictional frames. The materiality of the liquid element is not just a metaphor: it shapes natural, as well as textual environments. [less ▲]

Uncured styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) can be modelled as a viscoelastic material with at least two different relaxation mechanisms. In this paper we compare multi-mode constitutive models combining two viscoelastic modes (linear and/or nonlinear) in three possible ways. Our particular choice of the two modes was inspired by models originally developed to describe the response of asphalt binders. We select the model that best fits the experimental data obtained from a modified stress relaxation experiment in the torsional configuration of the plate-plate rheometer. The optimisation of the five model parameters for each model is achieved by minimising the weighted least-squares distance between experimental observations and the computer model output using a tree-structured Parzen estimator algorithm to find an initial guess, followed by further optimisation using the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. The results show that the model combining the linear mode and the nonlinear mode is the most suitable variant to describe the observed behavior of SBR in the given regime. The predictive capabilities of the three models are further examined in changed experimental and numerical configurations. Marked by expanding and diverse forms of collaboration and competition, the investigation of contemporary developments in higher education and science systems need additional attention. Therefore, this research topic provides a forum for multidisciplinary exchange of pioneering research ideas and dialogues as well as complementary research that contribute to the field of knowledge, and aspires to support innovative, cutting-edge, and policy relevant research at the nexus of higher education research and science studies (HERSS), bibliometrics, scientometrics, and computational social sciences –traditionally separate communities focusing either on small scale and in-depth case studies or on large-scale “big data” research. Researchers bringing together the aforementioned scientific communities can be classified as important bridge-builders to bolster the growing research and current initiatives in the field of Science of Science between diverse scientific communities and the wider public. Especially sociology with its ambition to pair classic and innovative theoretical approaches with new methods to analyze and to qualitatively interpret quantitative “big data” with machine learning algorithms initiates a fascinating and promising approach to interlink the still separate scientific communities in favor of a more holistic understanding of Science of Science. In this Research Topic -as part of the Lecture Series: Science of Science in the Spotlight at the University of Luxembourg- we invite members of these diverse scientific communities and researchers who are working at the intersection as “translators” to present their latest research. We aim to promote and provide evidence-based insights into the drivers of multidisciplinary and international research and innovation, networks, and collaboration, including higher education developments, scientific knowledge production (e.g. publications, citations, patents), science capacity-building, research evaluation, policy reforms, cultural and societal change processes, and institutions and organizations as well as scientists’ geographical mobility, gender inequalities and career paths in science, and of migrant scientists. Furthermore, we want to stimulate debate on theoretical in-depth context knowledge and innovative methodological approaches (for example social network analysis and machine learning algorithms), and on data acquisition and analysis -long identified as an important research gap in Science of Science. The aim of this research topic is to consolidate common themes and research interests to maintain and improve collaborations among researchers with different academic backgrounds and expertise from a wide range of disciplines. We welcome contributions that address the aforementioned topics and encourage to combine theory-driven, empirically-rich, multidisciplinary, historical, and comparative research, including informed and evidence-based interpretations of research results that illustrate the importance of the topic for researchers, policymakers, funding agencies, university managers, and other public research organizations. This CFE Opinion Statement discusses the decision of the Grand Chamber of the ECJ in Vodafone. The Court held that the imposition of the Hungarian progressive turnover-based tax on the telecommunications sector did not infringe the EU fundamental freedoms or article 401 of the VAT Directive (2006/112), and that the question regarding the prohibition of State aid was inadmissible. Vodafone is especially important in respect of the current debate regarding turnover-based digital services taxes. [less ▲]
