ABSTRACTThis study investigates the information seeking behavior of faculty and graduate students in the sciences of food and health. We compare three food science research sources through quantitative and qualitative research methods of interviews, observational studies, and surveys. We aimed to discover what motivates scientists' information seeking, how they search, what barriers they experience, and how they critically evaluate information sources. We explored faculty perceptions of literature review practice in the field and by their students, their preferences for training and best practice in order to improve research quality. Recommendations for librarians supporting food science and related departments are provided. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

Principal Component Analysis is used for damage detection in structures excited by harmonic forces. Time responses are directly analysed by Singular Value Decomposition to deduct two dominant Proper Orthogonal Values corresponding to two Proper Orthogonal Modes. Damage index is defined by the concept of subspace angle that a subspace is built from the two Proper Orthogonal Modes. A subspace angle reflects the coherence between two different structural health states. An example is given through the application on a part of a real prestressed concrete bridge in Luxembourg where different damage states were created by cutting a number of prestressed tendons in four scenarios with increasing levels. Results are better by using excitation frequency close to an eigenfrequency of the structure. The technique is convenient for practical application in operational bridge structures. [less ▲]

Ubiquitin specific peptidase 9 (USP9) is a deubiquitinase encoded by a sex-linked gene with a Y-chromosomal form (USP9Y) and an X-chromosomal form (USP9X) that escapes X-inactivation. Since USP9 is a key regulatory gene with sex-linked expression in the human brain, the gene may be of interest for researchers studying molecular gender differences and ubiquitin signaling in the brain. To assess the downstream effects of knocking down USP9X and USP9Y on a transcriptome-wide scale, we have conducted microarray profiling experiments using the human DU145 prostate cancer cell culture model, after confirming the robust expression of both USP9X and USP9Y in this model. By designing shRNA constructs for the specific knockdown of USP9X and the joint knockdown of USP9X and USP9Y, we have compared gene expression changes in both knockdowns to control conditions to infer potential shared and X- or Y-form specific alterations. Here, we provide details of the corresponding microarray profiling data, which has been deposited in the Gene Expression Omnibus database (GEO series accession number GSE79376). A biological interpretation of the data in the context of a potential involvement of USP9 in Alzheimer’s disease has previously been presented in Köglsberger et al. (2016). To facilitate the re-use and re-analysis of the data for other applications, e.g. the study of ubiquitin signaling and protein turnover control, and the regulation of molecular gender differences in the human brain and brain-related disorders, we provide a more in-depth discussion of the data properties, specifications and possible use cases. Having the advantage of flat lower surface, high stiffness and integrated fire resistance, slim-floor composite beams are widely used and favoured in many design solutions. The current bending design methods are mainly derived from plastic design methods for classical composite beam with consideration of the special features for slim-floor beams such as the transverse bending of bottom flange when used as support for slabs. Alternatively, more advanced strain-limited design method or FE-method can be used. In the case of full shear connection, with deep position of neutral axis and great compression zone height, there is a risk that plastic design method may overestimate the bending resistance of the cross section compared to the strain-limited design method. In the case of the partial shear connection, shear design diagram for slim-floor beams obtained by means of the strain-limited design can also differ significantly from the one obtained by plastic design method, thus further research on slim-floor beams is still necessary.
