This paper examines how and to what extent Luxembourg society was “exposed” to visual representations of the prospering steel industries and labour and working-class culture(s) from the 1880s until the 1920s – a period of massive industrialisation – and how it thus gradually “learned to labour”. Indeed, modern visual media were seen as ideal catalysts for the circulation, transmission and production of meaning, since they were considered to be appealing, objective, direct and capable of inspiring the imagination. The paper takes the reader through various mundane moments and events of industrial enculturation (annual funfair, slide lecture, vocational school, etc.) and engages with different “technologies of display” (photographs, fair albums, postcards, scale models, etc.) that subtly calibrated, conveyed and inculcated the new industrial reality “through the eye” and, in the process, (re)produced national identifications. By zooming in on these different “visual encounters” with industry and by bringing these isolated encounters together in one story, the paper (re)constructs a “learning route” – one among many possible pathways through this huge dynamic field of learning resources (or, “cultural ecology”) – and thus suggests how (informal) “cultural learning” might have taken place at the time. While accompanying us on this journey, the reader gains insights into how this field of resources evolved and how the industrial present was (re)framed, visually performed and (re)configured over time. A meal-estimation algorithm is developed based on an extended mathematical model of the glucose-insulin system. The proposed model describes the dynamics of glucose levels in blood and in subcutaneous layer, as well as the meal intake which is considered an unknown input of the system. This model seeks to represent in a more realistic manner, the pancreas malfunction in patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Based on model, a non-linear high gain observer (NHGO) with a sliding mode is designed in order to estimate the unmeasured states and the external disturbances of the system. This scheme is useful to maintain frequent monitoring of glucose levels and any changes in its behaviour. The unknown input or disturbance is estimated through the sliding mode based only the estimation error. Data from a real patient is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed estimation scheme. [less ▲]

The development, maintenance and documentation of complex systems is commonly supported by model-driven approaches where system properties are captured by visual models at different layers of abstraction and from different perspectives as proposed by the Object Management Group (OMG) and its model-driven architecture. Generally, a model is a concrete view on the system from a specific perspective in a particular domain. We focus on visual models in the form of diagrams and whose syntax is defined by domain-specific modelling languages (DSLs). Different models may represent different views on a system, i.e., they may be linked to each other by sharing a common set of information. Therefore, models that are expressed in one DSL may be transformed to interlinked models in other DSLs and furthermore, model updates may be synchronised between different domains. Concretely, this thesis presents the transformation and synchronisation of source code (abstract syntax trees, ASTs) written in the Satellite-Procedure & Execution Language (SPELL) to flow charts (code visualisation) and vice versa (code generation) as the result of an industrial case study. The transformation and synchronisation are performed based on existing approaches for model transformations and synchronisations between two domains in the theoretic framework of graph transformation where models are represented by graphs. Furthermore, extensions to existing approaches are presented for treating non-determinism in concurrent model synchronisations. Finally, the existing results for model transformations and synchronisations between two domains are lifted to the more general case of an arbitrary number of domains or models containing views, i.e., a model in one domain may be transformed to models in several domains or to all other views, respectively, and model updates in one domain may be synchronised to several other domains or to all other views, respectively. Let $\gamma_0$ be a curve on a surface $\Sigma$ of genus $g$ and with $r$ boundary components and let $\pi_1(\Sigma)\curvearrowright X$ be a discrete and cocompact action on some metric space. We study the asymptotic behavior of the number of curves $\gamma$ of type $\gamma_0$ with translation length at most $L$ on $X$. For example, as an application, we derive that for any finite generating set $S$ of $\pi_1(\Sigma)$ the limit $$\lim_{L\to\infty}\frac 1{L^{6g-6+2r}}\{\gamma\text{ of type }\gamma_0\text{ with }S\text{-translation length}\le L\}$$ exists and is positive. The main new technical tool is that the function which associates to each curve its stable length with respect to the action on $X$ extends to a (unique) continuous and homogenous function on the space of currents. By connecting devices, people, vehicles and infrastructures everywhere in a city, governments and their partners can improve community wellbeing and other economic and financial aspects (e.g., cost and energy savings). Nonetheless, smart cities are complex ecosystems that comprise many different stakeholders (network operators, managed service providers, logistic centers...) who must work together to provide the best services and unlock the commercial potential of the IoT. This is one of the major challenges that faces today's smart city movement, and more generally the IoT as a whole. Indeed, while new smart connected objects hit the market every day, they mostly feed "vertical silos" (e.g., vertical apps, siloed apps...) that are closed to the rest of the IoT, thus hampering developers to produce new added value across multiple platforms. Within this context, the contribution of this paper is twofold: (i) present the EU vision and ongoing activities to overcome the problem of vertical silos; (ii) introduce recent IoT standards used as part of a recent Horizon 2020 IoT project to address this problem. The implementation of those standards for enhanced sporting event management in a smart city/government context (FIFA World Cup 2022) is developed, presented, and evaluated as a proof-of-concept. L’intérêt des enfants pour leurs professions futures pourrait s’expliquer par le fait que les individus ont tendance à considérer hommes et femmes en catégories distinctes. Les enfants sont influencés par leur environnement qui se constitue, entre autre, par leurs parents, l'école, les médias, ainsi que par les jeux qu’on leur présente durant leur petite enfance. Dans cet article, nous allons présenter les résultats de deux études comparatives sur les jeux de la petite enfance ; d’une part auprès d’élèves du primaire et d’autre part auprès de lycéens. Dans l’échantillon des élèves du primaire, nous allons mettre les jeux de la petite enfance en relation avec les intérêts professionnels. Nous constatons dans cette étude que les jeux de la petite enfance ont une influence sur les choix professionnels. Pour que les intérêts professionnels se développent conformément à la personnalité de l’enfant, il serait donc préférable que celui-ci ait le choix entre une multitude de jeux, qui ne sont pas exclusivement liés aux stéréotypes de leur sexe. De cette façon, l’enfant aura la possibilité de développer ses propres choix et intérêts professionnels. [less ▲]

The current research programme is based on three studies investigating ramifications of ostracism in inpatients diagnosed with depression. It aims at understanding responses to ostracism in depressed patients, and the implications for psychotherapy and symptom deterioration using experimental (study 1) and longitudinal (studies 2 and 3) research designs. Investigating psychological factors such as attachment, self-esteem and Rejection Sensitivity, we found that attachment affects the immediate, physiological reactions to ostracism (study 1), that state self-esteem after an ostracism experience impacts therapy outcome (study 2) and that Rejection Sensitivity, the cognitive- affective disposition to anxiously expect and overact to rejection, predicts deterioration of depressive symptoms 6 months after treatment (study 3). These results highlight the salience of attachment when investigating reactions to ostracism, and the importance of Rejection Sensitivity over the course of therapy as an indicator for therapy outcome and risk for relapse. Cognitive radar refers to an adaptive sensing system exhibiting high degree of waveform adaptivity and diversity enabled by intelligent processing and exploitation of information from the environment. The next generation of radar systems are characterized by their application to scenarios exhibiting non-stationary scenes as well as interference caused by use of shared spectrum. Cognitive radar systems, by their inherent adaptivity, seem to be the natural choice for such applications. However, adaptivity opens up reliability issues due to uncertainties induced in the information gathering and processing. This paper lists some of the reliability aspects foreseen for cognitive radar systems and motivates the need for waveform designs satisfying different metrics simultaneously towards enhancing the reliability. An iterative framework based on multi-objective optimization is proposed to provide Pareto-optimal waveform designs. [less ▲]

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm makes the Internet more pervasive. IoT devices are objects equipped with computing, storage and sensing capabilities and they are interconnected with communication technologies. Smart cities exploit the most advanced information technologies to improve public services. For being effective, smart cities require a massive amount of data, typically gathered from sensors. The application of the IoT paradigm to smart cities is an excellent solution to build sustainable Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platforms and to produce a large amount of data following Sensing as a Service (S^2aaS) business models. Having citizens involved in the process through mobile crowdsensing (MCS) techniques unleashes potential benefits as MCS augments the capabilities of existing sensing platforms. To this date, it remains an open challenge to quantify the costs the users sustain to contribute data with IoT devices such as the energy from the batteries and the amount of data generated at city-level. In this paper, we analyze existing solutions, we provide guidelines to design a large-scale urban level simulator and we present preliminary results from a prototype. [less ▲]

Educational assessment tends to rely on more or less standardized tests, teacher judgments, and observations. Although teachers spend approximately half of their professional conduct in assessment-related activities, most of them enter their professional life unprepared, as classroom assessment is often not part of their educational training. Since teacher judgments matter for the educational development of students, the judgments should be up to a high standard. The present dissertation comprises three studies focusing on accuracy of teacher judgments (Study 1), consequences of (mis-)judgment regarding teacher nomination for gifted programming (Study 2) and teacher recommendations for secondary school tracks (Study 3), and individual student characteristics that impact and potentially bias teacher judgment (Studies 1 through 3). All studies were designed to contribute to a further understanding of classroom assessment skills of teachers. Overall, the results implied that, teacher judgment of cognitive ability was an important constant for teacher nominations and recommendations but lacked accuracy. Furthermore, teacher judgments of various traits and school achievement were substantially related to social background variables, especially the parents’ educational background. However, multivariate analysis showed social background variables to impact nomination and recommendation only marginally if at all. All results indicated differentiated but potentially biased teacher judgments to impact their far-reaching referral decisions directly, while the influence of social background on the referral decisions itself seems mediated. Implications regarding further research practices and educational assessment strategies are discussed. The implications on the needs of teachers to be educated on judgment and educational assessment are of particular interest and importance. [less ▲]
