The article identifies the conceptions of family resilience while questioning the role associated to the parent in this process. Further, the synthesis work takes stock about the investigated contexts of family resilience, but also on the intended purpose of the trilingual publications examined. The results lead to the discussion of the quality of parenting and the context of intervention around family education. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the main reflections and findings of the study on the place of the parent in the family resilience. [less ▲]

We introduce symplectic structures on “Lie pairs” of (real or complex) Lie algebroids as studied by Chen et al. (From Atiyah classes to homotopy Leibniz algebras. arXiv:1204.1075, 2012), encompassing homogeneous symplectic spaces, symplectic manifolds with a g-action, and holomorphic symplectic manifolds. We show that to each such symplectic Lie pair are associated Rozansky–Witten-type invariants of three-manifolds and knots, given respectively by weight systems on trivalent and chord diagrams. In order to check the reliability of man-made vibration prediction methods, vibration tests were performed on one of polders in the North-West of the Netherlands. The polder was chosen because it has a rather homogenous, thick and soft peat top layer. Here sufficient harmonical vibrations could be generated by a rather small shaker. The shaker was designed and manufactured in order to produce harmonical vibrations at the soil surface. It consists of two counter rotating electric vibrators (with rotating eccentric masses) in order to produce a vertically oscillating force. For the recordings of the vibrations, six 2D or 3D geophones were placed on the soil surface and one 2D geophone was placed on top of the shaker. The measured vibration amplitudes of the vertically oscillating shaker were compared with 1. Two different analytical methods used for the design of vibrating machine foundations, 2. The Confined Elasticity approach and 3. The Finite Element Method, for which Plaxis 2D software was used. Also the measured vibration amplitudes at the soil surface were compared with Barkan-Bornitz’s solution and Finite Element Modeling. [less ▲]

The following article describes the situation of choir singing in Luxembourg at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century. In comparison with other community music ensembles, it explains the impact or non-impact of music education on the recruitment of new members. It shows, with the help of statistical investigations and in giving some examples, how the phenomenon of singing has become, not only concerning choirs, a matter of older people. [less ▲]

This book deals with music as a life time companion that serves several functions across the life span. The combination of music with age includes music practice, music listening, music therapy and music education. The contributions clarify the relations between music education, music animation and music therapy. They deal with music in a medical and in a geriatric environment. They give impressing insights about music therapy that helps people to die in dignity. An innovative form of therapy illustrates how music can be benefitial in relation to pain. Two contributions give examples of music education and its challenges for elderly people in proposing didactic models and in highlighting how choir singing becomes a matter of informal learning for seniors. The aim of this paper is to study the utility variation related to the commuting mobility of University staff members due to their future workplace relocation. During the year 2012, a travel survey was completed by a total of 397 staff members, representing 36.4% of the university employees, who filled in a questionnaire which revealed complex decision making patterns due to the special traveling scenario involving four countries at once. A Multinomial Logit model has been used to anticipate the impact of university relocation from the capital city to a developing area in the south of the country which will happen between 2015 and 2018 and that will affect most of the employees. The effects of several Travel Demand Management measures are discussed based on the analysis of alternative scenarios [less ▲]

Individuals differ in the extent to which they are interested in sexualized violence as displayed in the frequent but not ubiquitous sexual interest in consensual acts of violent sexual roleplay and violent pornographic media in the normal population. The present research sought to develop and validate a multi-method asessment battery to measure individual differences in the preference for sexualized violence (PSV). Three indirect measures (Implicit Association Test, Semantic Misattribution Paradigm, Viewing Time) were combined in an online study with 107 men and 103 women. Participants with and without an affiliation with sadomasochistic sexual interest groups were recruited on corresponding internet platforms. Results revealed that all three indirect measures converged in predicting self-reported sexual interest in non-consensual sexuality. Specifically, for men all indirect measures were related to non-consensual sadistic sexual interest, whereas for women an association with masochistic sexual interest was found. Stimulus artefacts versus genuine gender differences are discussed as potential explanations of this dissociation. An outlook on the usability of the assessment battery in applied settings is delivered. [less ▲]

Energy efficiency remains a prevalent concern in the development of future HPC systems. Thus the next generations of supercomputers are foreseen to be developed as hybrid systems featuring traditional processors, accelerators (such as GPGPUs) and/or low-power processor architectures (ARM, Intel Atom, etc.) primarily designed for the mobile and embedded de- vices market. Also, a confluence with the Cloud Computing (CC) paradigm is anticipated, driven by economic sustainability factors. However, the performance impact of running Cloud middleware on such crossbred platforms remains to be explored, especially on low power processors. In this context, this paper brings two main contributions: (1) the design and implementation of BACH, a framework able to execute automated performance evaluations of Cloud and HPC cluster environments; (2) the concrete validation of the framework for the evaluation of the modern OpenStack Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) middleware, deployed on a cutting-edge cluster based on ultra low power energy efficient ARM processors. The efficiency in itself is measured with synthetic HPC benchmarks: HPCC (incorporating the well known HPL), HPCG and real world applications from the bioinformatics domain - GROMACS and ABySS. The experimental evaluation revealed an average 24% performance drop in performance for compute-intensive tasks and 65.6% drop in communication capacity compared to the native environment without the IaaS solution, showing a non-negligible impact on the tested platform. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies of this type, since deployment attempts of the OpenStack infrastructure on top of ARM platforms are in early stages, and are generally performed only for demonstration purposes. This paper proposes an H-infinity dynamic observer (DO) for a class of linear time invariant (LTI) systems in the presence of disturbances. It generalizes the existing results on the proportional observer (PO), the proportional integral observer (PIO) and the DO. The design method is derived from a new formulation of linear matrix inequality (LMI), based on the solutions of the algebraic constraints obtained from the unbiasedness conditions of the estimation error. A numerical example is provided to show the applicability and performances of our observer. [less ▲]
