At the beginning of the early modern period, the west of the Holy Roman Empire was a territorially fragmented landscape: Besides a few larger principalities, a multitude of smaller and smallest largely independent territories existed. But in the regional context, the relationships proved to be even more complex; they were characterised by overlapping feudal rights and high court districts, by joint dominions of two, three or more seigneurs, by disputed territories and many other forms of dependencies. A cartographic recording of these complex and multidimensional spatial structures was not possible by the means of the time. The rise of an increasingly scientific cartography from the mid-15th century onwards allowed the princes of larger territories to use cartographic representations as instruments of power: on the one hand, as a basis for the political and administrative development of their territories, on the other hand, as a medium for the dissemination of territorial claims and for the representation of dominion. The analysis of selected maps shows the various strategies used to construct the fragmentary possessions as closed territories. For this purpose, borders in the form of lines were defined on maps from the middle of the 16th century onwards, although linear frontiers between two territories mostly did not exist at that time. Count Peter-Ernst of Mansfield, the 16th-century governor of Luxembourg under the Spanish crown, left his mark on Luxembourg’s Clausen quarter with his construction of ‘La Fontaine’ Palace. But after centuries of transformation, only an educated eye can still connect the few remains on site with the once magnificent Renaissance palace and parkland. In Mansfeld Revisited, ten contributions present the current state of the research and draw comparisons with palaces in Belgium, France and Austria to develop perspectives on the future design and use of the Clausen site. They are complemented by a report summarising the outcome of the discussions held at the 2022 international symposium in Luxembourg. [less ▲]

The capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the three official seats of the EU, alongside Brussels and Strasbourg. Over the past 40 years, both the Grand Duchy and its capital city have undergone a remarkable trajectory of growth and change. One of the major sites implicated in this economic success is the Plateau de Kirchberg, a 365-hectares area that now hosts the European and banking district as well as some components of nationally important infrastructure (for example the National Library, Philharmonic Hall and many others). Initially agricultural land, the Kirchberg was developed by the central government from the early 1960s. It was then mainly designed in the fashion of a modern office town, with high-rises, starchitecture and wide boulevards. With its emblematic appeal of modern town planning, Kirchberg presents a huge contrast to the old city wiith its more than thousand years of history on the opposite side of the deep-cut Alzette valley. But can we see a divided city here? Is it not rather an urban extension, though large and of international significance, comparable to areas such as La Défense in Paris or the London Docklands? The thesis is pursued as to whether the Kirchberg district can be seen, de facto, as a second city. [less ▲]

The Luxatlas represents a collection of maps and structures (e.g., building, fortress, streets) combined with explanatory texts, chronological tables and images. On this basis, the historical town atlas documents historical processes of change diachronically for research purposes and education (university and school), for people interested in history (public history) and for municipal departments (supporting preparations for urban development projects). But the pure visualisation of research results is not the main focus of the project. The town atlas itself serves as an important tool for the acquisition of new knowledge. It is only by means of cartographic representations that comparisons can be made of various historical development processes in Luxembourg. The superimposition of different cartographic time layers enables users to visualise and analyse specific questions individually. The town atlas, therefore, offers a basis for further research on urban development. It is only through the cartographic presentation of historical, architectural, economic and urban development information that the distribution of certain spatial phenomena becomes visible and can then be interpreted and analysed. In this way, the interactive map becomes a central instrument for acquiring additional knowledge. [less ▲]

The 18th century was an age of great innovation in cartography. For the first time, surveys of large areas were undertaken with enormous personnel and technical effort in order to be able to produce accurate and true-to-scale maps. The Habsburg Monarchy followed the example of the "Carte de Cassini", the first topographic map of France, and also commissioned a cartographic survey for the Netherlandish provinces. Empress Maria Theresa commissioned the director of the mathematics school of the artillery corps of the Austrian Netherlands, Major General Count Johann-Joseph von Ferraris, with this task. Between 1771 and 1777, a map series consisting of 275 hand-coloured single sheets at a scale of 1:11520 was produced under his direction. The "Carte de cabinet des Pays-Bas autrichiens" impresses both by the outstanding quality of the representation and by its great wealth of detail. It is one of the most important sources of 18th century Luxembourg history. [less ▲]

The historical atlas of the city of Luxembourg has been accessible on the internet since 2019. Since then, it has been continuously expanded, revised and improved, both technically and in terms of content. Users currently have the opportunity to view a large number of historical old maps and aerial photographs from Luxembourg archives for the period between 1560 and 2017 at zoom levels of their choice and to compare them with each other on transparent layers, precisely fitting one above the other. In addition, historical photos and views as well as explanatory texts on the city's history and on selected buildings or other infrastructure elements can be displayed. In order to realise the advantages of a web publication in the best possible way, the Luxatlas is based on open source software. This enables the development of customised WebGIS applications for the specific requirements of the project. In addition to the project presentation, the presentation will also highlight the methodological and source-critical challenges and put them up for discussion. [less ▲]
