In diesem Beitrag wird der in horizontalgeograpischer Forschung und Grenzforschung zu beobachtende Trend hin zu synthetischen Betrachtungen von Räumen bzw. Grenzen diskutiert. Dafür wird am Beispiel der Grenzforschung und des sich dort vollziehenden Complexity Shift gezeigt, wie synthetische Betrachtungen mit ihren konzeptionellen Annahmen und analytischen Unterscheidungen realisiert werden können, welche Herausforderungen damit verknüpft sind, und welches wissenschaftliche Vokabular mobilisiert werden kann. Deutlich wird, dass die Praxis der Grenzforschung von einer Pluralität dessen, was an Grenzen als komplex aufgefasst wird, und einer ungenauen Verwendung des Komplexitätsbegriffs geprägt ist, mit der oft lediglich eine Kompliziertheit von Grenzen konstatiert wird und eine konsequente synthetische Betrachtung ausbleibt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird der Komplexitätsbegriff näher bestimmt und Border Complexities als eine Perspektive für eine tatsächliche synthetische Betrachtung unter komplexitätsorientiertem Vorzeichen eingeführt. Abschließend wird mit Blick auf horizontale Geographien und Transformationsprozesse das Potential des Komplexitätsbegriffs für synthetische Betrachtungen herausgestellt und vor unzulässigen Komplexifizierungen in der Konzeption von Räumen und Grenzen gewarnt. Der Beitrag setzt Impulse für die Weiterentwicklung und praktische Umsetzung von synthetischen Betrachtungen, wie sie die horizontalgeographische Forschung einfordert. [less ▲]

The objective of this paper is to discuss the impact of the border, or more precisely the discontinuities introduced by the border in a cross-border region. It will focus on the numerous challenges linked to various crises (health, energy, demographic or economic) by asking whether the border constitutes a resource that allows us to activate levers and to face them together, or whether on the contrary, it increases these discontinuities even more. The health crisis, for example, is rich in lessons, especially regarding the organization of work in a crossborder context in the face of the sudden return of borders, after years of erasure. Spätestens seit der Covid-19-Pandemie ist die Rolle von Grenzen, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten an Bedeutung gewonnen haben, nicht mehr zu übersehen. Diese Entwicklung, die sich mühelos auf der globalen Ebene rekonstruieren lässt, ist mit dem Virus auch in die europäischen Grenzregionen vorgedrungen. Dort ist die europäische Grenzraumforschung nun mit Phänomenen konfrontiert, mit denen sie sich bisher kaum auseinandergesetzt hat. Der Beitrag wendet sich solchen Phänomenen zu und arbeitet exemplarisch das Zusammenspiel von Ver- und Entgrenzungsprozessen im Kontext des Covidfencing heraus. Dafür werden soziale Aushandlungsprozesse der Grenzschließungen in der Großregion SaarLorLux und im deutsch-polnischen Grenzgebiet als „people’s resilience“ thematisiert. Darauf aufbauend werden Überlegungen vorgestellt, wie sich die europäische Grenzraumforschung für Phänomene und Fragestellungen in Zeiten der Vergrenzungen aufstellen kann. Der internationalen Grenzforschung folgend wird eine Erweiterung der Forschungsagenda um alltagskulturelle Fragen vorgeschlagen, die einen Erkenntnisgewinn versprechen. Außerdem wird eine Justierung des verbreiteten Grenzbegriffs vorgeschlagen, um die Grenze als Gegenstand alltagskultureller Aushandlungen erschließbar zu machen. [less ▲]

While the materialities and functionalities of borders have changed drastically in recent decades, the ordering principle of the border persists. At the same time, the selective character of borders is emerg-ing with a clarity that has hardly been seen in Europe before. This is the point of departure for the issue papers, which discuss the observation that borders do not have the same significance for all people. For this purpose, the authors work with the concept of multivalence, which assumes that borders have social values or relevances that differ regarding certain groups of people. The thematic issue with case studies of governance, flight, reporting, film, and literature shows multiple valences of borders, which stand for inequalities and refer to powerful cultural orders. Malgré la libre circulation dans l’espace Schengen, la frontiérisation s’est propagée aux régions frontalières en Europe, au plus tard avec la pandémie du Covid-19. Les travaux menés jusqu’à présent sur les fermetures de frontières dans le cadre de la pandémie montrent que les études sur le covidfencing portent principalement sur des questions socio-économiques, de gouvernance et sur la gestion de crise. Le quotidien des habitants des régions frontalières, leur vécu des événements et les identités face à l’autre sont peu pris en compte. La communication traite cette dimension de culture quotidienne pendant la pandémie et analyse la dynamique de rebordering et debordering. Pour ce faire, les exemples de contestation du covidfencing à la frontière luxo-allemande, franco-allemande et germano-polonaise seront discutées en tant que people’s resilience. Ce dernier comprend des protestations, des solidarités ou des actions symboliques qui mettent en évidence les actes de contestation des frontiérisations par les acteurs civils. Les dynamiques de frontiérisation sont des phénomènes récents dans les régions frontalières en Europe et ne sont pas encore pris en compte dans l’étude des régions frontalières. Cependant, il faut s’attendre qu’après la pandémie, les frontiérisations dans les réalités de vie au sein des régions frontalières resteront pertinentes et continuerons à faire l’objet des contestations par ses habitants. L’unilatéralisme politique, l’euroscepticisme persistant ou la montée du populisme dans un contexte de flux migratoires continus n’en sont quelques des facteurs décisifs. C’est dans ce contexte qu’en conclusion seront présentées des perspectives pour l’étude des régions frontalières à l’ère de frontiérisation. [less ▲]

The cross-border study looks at young people who, in retrospect, were granted virtually no consideration in the pandemic. First of all, the authors analyse the impact of the pandemic on vocational training across the German-French border. They base their findings on a number of interviews, which provide insights into the dynamics of cross-border cooperation in the vocational field at a time which was characterised not only by Covid-19, but also by institutional restructuring. The authors then go on to present the results of their own survey of students on bachelor's and master's courses in the border areas of the Greater Region. The survey was coordinated by Saarland University and provides information on the physical and virtual mobility of students, on their social contacts and their counselling and support needs during 2020 and 2021. The results are illustrated with concrete examples from students on the tri-national UniGR master's course in Border Studies. [less ▲]
