[more ▼] In her books Red in blue trilogy (2015) and L'impératif transgressif (The Transgressive Imperative) (2016a), the French-Cameroonian novelist Léonora Miano questions and elucidates, among other things, the repression of the history of “forgotten worlds” in relation to transatlantic human trafficking and colonialism and pleads for reinventing African imaginary by decolonizing the French-speaking world called Francophonie. Therefore, she invites sub-Saharan writers to use their verbs in a non-conformist way: it is about finding oneself beyond and freeing oneself from the colonizer-colonized mindset. In this regard, Miano coins the concept of Afrophonie as a form of countercultural re-examination and reorientation of the politics of perception stemming from the coloniality of the French language and the Francophonie. From a countercultural perspective, this contribution discusses the potentiality of the non-conformity of Léonora Miano´s writings beyond the colonizer-colonized mindset. [more ▼] First, this contribution discusses “thinking-as-usual” in connection with to- day’s migration dilemma in Europe as the manifestation of a crisis from the per- spective of “social drama.” Secondly, the present contribution seeks to question the discourse of “thinking-as-usual” and its performative character as observable units shaping perceptions and staging strategies in some contemporary theater and performance productions in Europe. Thirdly, it analyzes the response-ability and potentiality of some other theater and performance arts which productively address structures of belonging and exclusion stemming from “thinking-as-usual.” Finally, this analysis explores how de-essentializing epistemological approaches of European artistic habits can productively impact the negotiation of otherness and migration in the theater and performing arts. [more ▼] This article analyzes Brecht’s concept of gesture in the context of contem- porary transcultural theater as a means of cognition for an inquisitive stage practice of cultural self-reflection, self-representation, and self-perception. In this respect, Günther Heeg’s main thesis on transcultural theater as a reappraisal of one’s own traditions and cultural phantasms and their distor- tion into recognizability, Alfred Schütz’s reflection on “thinking-as-usual,” and Hans-Thies Lehmann’s Postdramatic Theatre (1999/2006) form the theoretical framework for the present considerations. After approaching gesture epistemologically as a transcultural means of cognition, this contri- bution secondly examines—based on Schütz’s “thinking-as-usual” and on concrete examples of texts as well as theater and performance projects— several theatrical strategies of categorizing what is foreign in oneself and their respective construction of perception in the cultural other. Thirdly and finally, this study deals with the question of the “migration dilemma” and introduces the transcultural theater’s concept of gesture as a means of cognition for transcending “thinking-as-usual” in contemporary European theater. [more ▼] Cultural diplomacy "refers to the exchange of ideas, information, art, and other aspects of culture among nations and their peoples to foster mutual understanding." (Cummings, 2003, p. 1). However, how can we interpret cultural diplomacy and act upon it in and outside academia? How can universities harness the potentiality of cultural diplomacy to transform societies? These are among others the leading questions discussed in the international panel on "the art of cultural diplomacy: cultural diplomacy in and outside academia" linked to international students as 'students as global citizens'. This discussion panel took place in 2017 May, the 26 in the framework of the 4th Transatlantic Dialogue titled "Creating Human Bonds Through Cultural Diplomacy." The panel gathered and focused on diverse engagements and activities of international students and student a airs professionals from all continents of the world as potential agents of the art of cultural diplomacy in and outside academia. Our analysis builds on these questions and the objectives of this panel. It discusses from a combined perspective of an academic research-art interface the art of cultural diplomacy as an aesthetic and a means of intercultural awareness and cultural interactions and reciprocal knowledge transfer between academia and the society or the general public. [more ▼] This contribution analyzes Aristotle’s influence on the modern understanding of theater (based on the concept of the drama script) as a restriction and reduction of the potentiality of theater. Therefore, it presents a comparative analysis of the objectives of the antique theatrical practices around the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. (before Aristotle) and Schlingensief’s “Action 18, Kill Politic” (2002). It provides also a transcultural examination that helps explain the meaning of the postdramatic transgression of taboos, its productive aesthetics of risk, and its social and political potentiality. Thus, the performance “Action 18, Kill Politic” is analyzed as a process-oriented and experience-based aesthetic of risk as well as a ‘social drama’ in everyday life.
