CBBS, The Well, Fidonet, Geocities, DDS, Calvacom, the Minitel are some of the « virtual communities » and spaces, where, from the 1970s to the 1990s, the early adopters of computer-mediated communications built digital social networks, which did not yet bear this name. They challenge our definition of social networks, invite us to consider the continuities and disruptions between these past experiences and those of today, but also the traces left by these communities, to better consider the future of our born-digital heritage. [less ▲]

The presence now of the Web in every area of life demands studies which constitute it simultaneously both as itself a contextualising object and as anchored in a context. Contextualising because today it directly influences an infinite number of objects, which can no longer be studied without taking account of their echoes online. In transmedia dynamics in particular, we can see how the Web is increasingly becoming an ever-present backdrop to controversies, to the configuration of information and even to interpersonal relationships. Equally, the Web must find its own contextualisation, first of all – since we are historians – from a diachronic perspective. The first challenge is not to remain within the limits set by the technology itself. This twofold approach (the Web in context and the Web as context) suggests how focused we need to be on the construction of an ever-changing socio-technical reality – a return to a totalising, process-focused history which takes account of ongoing developments. We should resist the effects of any discourse tending to fix realities or establish, in hieratic or metonymic fashion, an image of ‘THE’ Web. The present analysis falls into three main sections, which interrogate, in turn, the diachronic or temporal contextualisation, the boundaries or spatial contextualisation, and finally collective and individual experiences of the Web. This chapter seeks to show the value of a relational, practice-oriented approach – what in STS vocabulary is called ‘unpacking black boxes’, or doing a sociology ‘of assemblages’. The chapter examines how this approach can shed light on the hybrid mobilizations of innovators, consumers, users and entrepreneurs – alongside their creations and cultures – that have made the Web the complex socio-technical system it is today.

[less ▲]

Naturally occurring and artificial bacterial communities play an import role in many biotechnological processes. To elucidate bacterial interactions that are important for potential optimized biotechnological applications, high-throughput measurements of biomolecules, metagenomics, metratranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and meta-metabolomics provide a detailed snapshot of mixed microbial consortia. Integration of multiple layers of omics data allows to reconstruct structure and function of complex microbial communities and is demonstrated for two different model systems. The first chapter focuses on synthetic communities consisting of strains representing key species found in biomining operations and acid mine drainage and that are of economical interest for copper production. A high-quality closed reference genome for L. ferriphilum was obtained by DNA sequencing and was subsequently used to integrate functional omics data, i.e. transcriptomic and proteomic profiling. The combination of genomics, genome annotation, and functional omics data allowed an in-depth characterization of L. ferriphilum in culture medium and in the presence of the iron sulfide mineral chalcopyrite, an economically relevant copper ore. Subsequently, analyses were performed for co-cultures of up to three organisms highlighting specific interaction mechanisms. The cultures without L. ferriphilum showed higher copper solubilisation rates, as the highly efficient iron oxidiser might raise the redox potential above the optimal range. For in situ studies, reference-based analyses are of limited use, e.g. due to a lack in reference genomes of culturable isolates. Hence, the second chapter focuses on an approach to study mixed microbial communities independent of prior knowledge and available reference genomes. A timeseries of oleaginous floating sludge samples that spans over one and a half years was analysed by integrating metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and meta-metabolomic data. This allowed the reconstruction of population level genomes and the characterization of the niches of the respective populations. The functional potential was assessed, as well as expression profiles over time, yielding a detailed view on lifestyle strategies and the potential impact of abiotic factors. Understanding the niche ecology of the predominant lipid accumulators in the system could lead towards optimized biofuel production. [less ▲]

Petri nets slicing is a technique that aims to improve the verification of systems modeled in Petri nets. Petri nets slicing was first developed to facilitate debugging but then used for the alleviation of the state space explosion problem for the model checking of Petri nets. In this article, different slicing techniques are studied along with their algorithms introducing: i) a classification of Petri nets slicing algorithms based on their construction methodology and objective (such as improving state space analysis or testing), ii) a qualitative and quantitative discussion and comparison of major differences such as accuracy and efficiency, iii) a syntactic unification of slicing algorithms that improve state space analysis for easy and clear understanding, and iv) applications of slicing for multiple perspectives. Furthermore, some recent improvements to slicing algorithms are presented, which can certainly reduce the slice size even for strongly connected nets. A noteworthy use of this survey is for the selection and improvement of slicing techniques for optimizing the verification of state event models. [less ▲]
