Decision-making impairments play a pivotal role in the emergence and maintenance of addictive disorders. However, a sound conceptualization of decision making as an umbrella construct, encompassing its cognitive, affective, motivational, and physiological subcomponents, is still lacking. This prevents an efficient evaluation of the heterogeneity of decision-making impairments and the development of tailored treatment. This paper thus unfolds the various processes involved in decision making by adopting a critical approach of prominent dual- or triadic-process models, which postulate that decision making is influenced by the interplay of impulsive-automatic, reflective-controlled, and interoceptive processes. Our approach also focuses on social cognition processes, which play a crucial role in decision making and addictive disorders but were largely ignored in previous dual- or triadic-process models. We propose here a theoretical framework in which a range of coordinated processes are first identified on the basis of their theoretical and clinical relevance. Each selected process is then defined before reviewing available results underlining its role in addictive disorders (i.e., substance use, gambling, and gaming disorders). Laboratory tasks for measuring each process are also proposed, initiating a preliminary process-based decision-making assessment battery. This original approach may offer an especially informative view of the constitutive features of decision making impairments in addiction. As prior research has implicated these features as risk factors for the development and maintenance of addictive disorders, our processual approach sets the scene for novel and transdiagnostic experimental and applied research avenues [less ▲]

The XDEM multi-physics and multi-scale simulation platform roots in the Ex- tended Discrete Element Method (XDEM) and is being developed at the In- stitute of Computational Engineering at the University of Luxembourg. The platform is an advanced multi- physics simulation technology that combines flexibility and versatility to establish the next generation of multi-physics and multi-scale simulation tools. For this purpose the simulation framework relies on coupling various predictive tools based on both an Eulerian and Lagrangian approach. Eulerian approaches represent the wide field of continuum models while the Lagrange approach is perfectly suited to characterise discrete phases. Thus, continuum models include classical simulation tools such as Computa- tional Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) while an ex- tended configuration of the classical Discrete Element Method (DEM) addresses the discrete e.g. particulate phase. Apart from predicting the trajectories of individual particles, XDEM extends the application to estimating the thermo- dynamic state of each particle by advanced and optimised algorithms. The thermodynamic state may include temperature and species distributions due to chemical reaction and external heat sources. Hence, coupling these extended features with either CFD or FEA opens up a wide range of applications as diverse as pharmaceutical industry e.g. drug production, agriculture food and processing industry, mining, construction and agricultural machinery, metals manufacturing, energy production and systems biology. We demonstrate the potential for the Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide highly accurate tropospheric products for use in meteorological applications. Tropospheric products, in particular the wet delays, are treated as an unknown parameter in GPS processing and are estimated with other parameters such as station coordinates. In this study, we investigate the effects of Phase Center Correction (PCC) models on tropospheric zenith wet delay (ZWD), integrated water vapor (IWV) and gradient products. Two solutions were generated using the GAMIT software over the EUREF Permanent GNSS Network (EPN). The first (reference) solution was derived by applying the International GNSS Service (IGS) type-mean PCC model, while for the second solution PCC models from individual calibrations were used. The solutions were generated identically, except for the PCC model differences. The two solutions were compared, with the assumption that common signals are differenced out. The comparison of the two solutions clearly shows a bias in all tropospheric products, which can be attributed to PCC model deficiencies. Overall, mean biases of ±1.8, ±0.3, ±0.14 and ±0.19 mm are evident in ZWD, IWV, North-South and East-West gradients, respectively. Moreover, the differences between the two solutions show seasonal variations. For all antenna types, the ZWD and IWV differences are dominated by white plus power-law noise, with latter characterizing the low-frequency spectrum. On the other hand, the horizontal gradients exhibit a white plus first order autoregressive noise characteristic with less than 1% white noise. The individual PCC model provides a better fit to an external independent model in terms of gradient estimate and also provides up to 3 % more carrier phase ambiguity resolution. [less ▲]

The Internet is now all-pervasive across much of the globe. While it has positive uses (e.g. prompt access to information, rapid news dissemination), many individuals develop Problematic Use of the Internet (PUI), an umbrella term incorporating a range of repetitive impairing behaviours. The Internet can act as a conduit for, and may contribute to, functionally impairing behaviours including excessive and compulsive video gaming, compulsive sexual behaviour, buying, gambling, streaming or social networks use. There is growing public and National health authority concern about the health and societal costs of PUI across the lifespan. Gaming Disorder is being considered for inclusion as a mental disorder in diagnostic classification systems, and was listed in the ICD-11 version released for consideration by Member States ( http://www.who.int/classifications/icd/revision/timeline/en/ ). More research is needed into disorder definitions, validation of clinical tools, prevalence, clinical parameters, brain-based biology, socio-health-economic impact, and empirically validated intervention and policy ap- proaches. Potential cultural differences in the magnitudes and natures of types and patterns of PUI need to be better understood, to inform optimal health policy and service development. To this end, the EU under Horizon 2020 has launched a new four-year European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action Programme (CA 16207), bringing together scientists and clinicians from across the fields of impulsive, compulsive, and addictive disorders, to advance networked interdisciplinary research into PUI across Europe and beyond, ultimately seeking to inform regulatory policies and clinical practice. This paper describes nine critical and achievable research priorities identified by the Network, needed in order to advance understanding of PUI, with a view towards identifying vulnerable individuals for early intervention. The network shall enable collaborative research networks, shared multinational databases, multicentre studies and joint publications . [less ▲]

Uncertainty in timing properties (e.g., detection time of external events) is a common occurrence in embedded software systems since these systems interact with complex physical environments. Such time uncertainty leads to non-determinism. For example, time-triggered operations may either generate different valid outputs across different executions, or experience failures (e.g., results not being generated in the expected time window) that occur only occasionally over many executions. For these reasons, time uncertainty makes the generation of effective test oracles for timing requirements a challenging task. To address the above challenge, we propose STUIOS (Stochastic Testing with Unique Input Output Sequences), an approach for the automated generation of stochastic oracles that verify the capability of a software system to fulfill timing constraints in the presence of time uncertainty. Such stochastic oracles entail the statistical analysis of repeated test case executions based on test output probabilities predicted by means of statistical model checking. Results from two industrial case studies in the automotive domain demonstrate that this approach improves the fault detection effectiveness of tests suites derived from timed automata, compared to traditional approaches. The huge increase of population living in cities calls for a sustainable urban development. Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) leverages participation of active citizens to improve performance of existing sensing infrastructures. In typical MCS systems, sensing tasks are allocated and reported on individual-basis. In this paper, we investigate on collaboration among users for data delivery as it brings a number of benefits for both users and sensing campaign organizers and leads to better coordination and use of resources. By taking advantage from proximity, users can employ device-to-device (D2D) communications like Wi-Fi Direct that are more energy efficient than 3G/4G technology. In such scenario, once a group is set, one of its member is elected to be the owner and perform data forwarding to the collector. The efficiency of forming groups and electing suitable owners defines the efficiency of the whole collaborative-based system. This paper proposes three policies optimized for MCS that are compliant with current Android implementation of Wi-Fi Direct. The evaluation results, obtained using CrowdSenSim simulator, demonstrate that collaborative-based approaches outperform significantly individual-based approaches. [less ▲]

In this letter, we study the optimal solution of multiuser symbol-level precoding (SLP) for minimization of the total transmit power under given signal-to-interference-plus noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Adopting the distance preserving constructive interference regions (DPCIR), we first derive a simplified reformulation of the problem. Then, we analyze the structure of the optimal solution using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions. This leads us to obtain a closed-form sub-optimal SLP solution (CF-SLP) for the original problem. Meanwhile, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition under which the power minimizer SLP is equivalent to the conventional zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF). Simulation results show that CF-SLP provides significant gains over ZFBF, while performing quite close to the optimal SLP in scenarios with rather small number of users. The results further indicate that the CF-SLP method has a reduction of order 1000 in computational time compared to the optimal solution. [less ▲]

In Luxemburg erreichen viele Jugendliche ein gutes Lesekompetenzniveau nicht nur in einer, sondern gleich in zwei Sprachen. Allerdings wird wiederholt darauf hingewiesen, dass die Lesekompetenzen in Luxemburg stark mit dem familiären Hintergrund der Schülerinnen und Schüler zusammenhängen. Die vorliegende Studie soll jedoch über die Darstellung der Zusammenhänge zwischen den Deutsch- und Französisch-Lesekompetenzen und Einflussfaktoren wie sozio-ökonomischem Hintergrund, Migrationsstatus und Muttersprache hinausgehen. In der Tat stellt sich die Frage, ob es Faktoren gibt, die sich positiv auf das Lesekompetenzniveau der Schülerinnen und Schüler auswirken und auf die sie – anders als bei diesen mittlerweile gut belegten Faktoren – selbst Einfluss nehmen können? Das Leseverhalten Jugendlicher stellt hierfür einen naheliegenden Ansatzpunkt dar. Somit wurden die Schülerinnen und Schüler während der ÉpStan 2016 nicht nur zu ihrem familiären, schulischen und persönlichen Hintergrund befragt, sondern erstmals auch zu ihrem außerschulischen Leseverhalten. Hierbei wurde erfasst, wie häufig sie in ihrer Freizeit Texte unterschiedlicher Art (z. B. Erzählungen, Sachtexte, Zeitungsartikel, Foreneinträge oder Emails) lesen, und in welchen Sprachen sie dies tun. Mittels verschiedener Regressionsanalysen wurde der familiäre Hintergrund der Jugendlichen, ihr Leseverhalten, sowie ihr Lesekompetenzniveau im Deutschen und Französischen zueinander in Bezug gesetzt. Die aus diesen Analysen hervorgehenden Ergebnisse belegen eindrücklich, dass neben dem familiären Hintergrund auch die Lesehäufigkeit und die Sprache, in der die Schülerinnen und Schüler üblicherweise lesen, von Bedeutung für das erreichte Lesekompetenzniveau sind. Darüber hinaus haben insbesondere die Textsorten, mit denen sich die Jugendlichen in ihrer Freizeit auseinandersetzen, entscheidenden Einfluss auf ihre Deutsch- und ihre Französisch-Lesekompetenz. Insbesondere die Häufigkeit, mit der Jugendliche angeben, narrative Texte (wie Geschichten, Romane oder Erzählungen) zu lesen, steht deutlich in positivem Zusammenhang mit ihrer Lesekompetenz in beiden Sprachen. Der Vortrag schließt mit einer Diskussion bezüglich der außerordentlich hohen Attraktivität von digitalen Textsorten bei Kindern und Jugendlichen, und den Möglichkeiten, diese Vielfalt an primär kommunikativ bzw. interaktiv ausgerichteten Lesematerialien als lebensnahe, pädagogische „Sprungbretter“ zu nutzen, mit deren Hilfe zukünftige Leserinnen und Leser an zunehmend komplexere Texte herangeführt werden könnten. 404 not found, closed and opaque corpora, websites disappearance after a few years, obsolete tools, problems of maintenance … this workshop wishes to explore the instability of data, of their digital (digitalized or/and born-digital) heritage, of digital technologies and tools, the numerous transformations of devices, platforms, terms of use and the tensions between this instability and the necessary stability and reproducibility of research. How should researchers deal at the same time with the ephemeral, the flow, the obsolescence and the concern of knowledge production? How is it possible to reconciliate the temporality of research and the short cycles of technologies? This workshop aims at introducing and identifying the challenges of sustainability and durability which are too often underestimated in digital research and rarely presented to students when introducing tools and research methods. This 120 minutes workshop will be organized in three parts as follows: - Identifying the levels, steps, in which sustainability and durability of a digital research are challenged, from the shaping and sharing of corpora to the maintenance of research results and digital productions. This will be based on the participants experiences and on several examples of research projects; - Mapping the issues and existing solutions such as digital research infrastructures, permanent identifiers, licenses, but also obstacles and limits (such as author rights …) that researchers have to face or take into account; - Creating practical guidelines that could be used by scholars and students. This workshop expands a research project conducted by Christine Barats (Céditec, Université Paris- Est Créteil), Andreas Fickers (Head of C2DH, University of Luxembourg), Valérie Schafer (C2DH, University of Luxembourg). Objective: Increasing availability of surgically resected brain tissue from patients with focal epilepsy and Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) or low-grade glio-neuronal tumors has fostered large-scale genetic examination. However, assessment of pathogenicity of germline and somatic variants remains difficult. Here, we present a state of the art evaluation of reported genes and variants associated with epileptic brain lesions. Methods: We critically re-evaluated the pathogenicity for all neuropathology-associated variants reported to date in PubMed and ClinVar databases including 101 neuropathology-associated missense variants encompassing 11 disease-related genes. We assessed gene variant tolerance and classified all identified missense variants according to guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG). We further extended the bioinformatic variant prediction by introducing a novel gene-specific deleteriousness ranking for prediction scores. Results: Application of ACMG guidelines and in silico gene variant tolerance analysis classified only seven out of 11 genes to be likely disease-associated according to the reported a disease mechanism, while 61 (60.4%) of 101 variants of those genes were classified as of uncertain significance (VUS), 37 (36.6%) as being likely pathogenic (LP) and 3 (3%) as being pathogenic (P). Significance: We concluded that the majority of neuropathology-associated variants reported to date do not have enough evidence to be classified as pathogenic. Interpretation of lesion-associated variants remains challenging and application of current ACMG guidelines is recommended for interpretation and prediction. [less ▲]
