This chapter explores how time and temporality – that is, the rhythms and tempos of social and environmental change – have been considered in social theory before going on to explore the conceptual frameworks and practices through which policy-makers seek to influence temporal processes in the specific context of climate change policy. The chapter highlights conflict between the temporalities of climate change and the temporalities of politics, as well as conflict between the temporalities of competing political and decision-making processes. While policy-makers advocate strategies to depoliticize climate policy in response to these conflicts, the chapter argues this is neither possible nor desirable. Instead, it advocates more democratic and deliberative approaches to the challenge of synchronizing ever more visible ecological temporalities with the multiple temporalities of the social. [less ▲]

A reliable and safety infrastructure for both transport and traffic is becoming increasingly important today. The condition assessment of bridges remains difficult and new methods must be found to provide reliable information. A meaningful in-situ assessment of bridges requires very detailed investigations which cannot be guaranteed by commonly used methods. It is known that the structural response to external loading is influenced by local damages. However, the detection of local damage depends on many factors such as environmental effects (e.g. temperature), construction layer (e.g. asphalt) and accuracy of the structural response measurement. Within the paper, a new so-called Deformation Area Difference (DAD) Method is presented. The DAD method is based on a load deflection experiment and does not require a reference measurement of initial condition. Therefore, the DAD method can be applied on existing bridges. Moreover, the DAD method uses the most modern technologies such as high precision measurement techniques and attempts to combine digital photogrammetry with drone applications. The DAD method uses information given in the curvature course from a theoretical model of the structure and compares it to real measurements. The paper shows results from a laboratory load-deflection experiment with a steel beam which has been gradually damaged at distinct positions. The load size is chosen so that the maximum deflection does not exceed the serviceability limit state. With the data obtained by the laboratory experiment, the damage degree, which can still be detected by the DAD method, is described. Furthermore, the influence of measurement accuracy on damage detection is discussed. [less ▲]

Objective: Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct known to play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of a wide range of problematic behaviors and psychological disorders in children. Method: In this study, we adapted the short French adult version of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale for use with children (short UPPS-P-C) and tested its psychometric properties. Results: Confirmatory factor analyses conducted on a sample of 425 children (aged from 8 to 14 years) supported the five-factor structure of the scale. Additional analyses emphasized the good internal and test-retest reliability of the short UPPS-P-C. Furthermore, our results also revealed that lack of premeditation and urgency subscales were able to discriminate between children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their matched controls. Conclusion: These results suggest that the short UPPS-P-C may be considered as a promising time-saving tool to assess impulsivity traits in healthy children and in children with psychiatric disorders. Jugendliche aus stationären Einrichtungen (z.B. Heime) sind häufig von der Chronifizierung einer psychischen Störung bedroht [Schmid, 2007]. Unter anderem aufgrund von Traumatisierungen sind externalisierende Verhaltensprobleme, z.B. wiederholter unangemessener Ärgerausdruck, festzustellen, die einen Behandlungserfolg in Frage stellen. Erforderlich ist es daher problematische Ärgerreaktionen von Jugendlichen zu thematisieren, und den Umgang mit Ärger zu verändern. In dieser Falldarstellung wird die Umsetzung eines 10-wöchigen kognitiv-verhaltenstherapeutischen Ärgerbewältigungstrainings [Schwenkmezger et al., 1999] bei einem fremdplatzierten verhaltensauffälligen Jugendlichen aufgezeigt [Steffgen et al., 2014]. Die eingesetzten testdiagnostischen Verfahren belegen, dass die Bereitschaft zu aggressiven Verhaltensweisen sowie des nach außen gerichteten Ärgerausdrucks reduziert, und die Ärgerkontrolle erhöht wurde. Insgesamt konnte die Wirksamkeit der programmgestützten Intervention am Einzelfall nachgewiesen werden. Jugendliche in der Heimunterbringung können somit durch die Teilnahme an einer Ärgerintervention Nutzen ziehen, indem sie lernen ihre Emotionsregulation zu optimieren, um dadurch ihre soziale Kompetenz zu erhöhen. Ihre gesellschaftliche Eingliederung ließe sich dadurch erleichtern. [less ▲]

Die hohe und gestiegene Bedeutung inklusiver Bildung – für Individuen und Gesellschaften gleichermaßen – wird global, national, regional und lokal von verschiedensten Akteur*innen hervorgehoben sowie zunehmend auch wissenschaftlich multidisziplinär diskutiert. Fragen der Steuerung, der Governance, hingegen, sind bisher im deutschsprachigen Raum nur wenig systematisch oder umfassend analysiert worden, obwohl mehrere Wissenschaftsdisziplinen sich zunehmend mit diesen Fragen auseinandersetzen. Während politikwissenschaftliche Analysen die Machtstrukturen, Pfadabhängigkeiten und Entscheidungsprozesse fokussieren haben soziologische Analysen die globale Diffusion von Diskursen und Normen sowie systembedingte Komplexitäten und Umsetzungsschwierigkeiten vielfältiger Reformen verdeutlicht. Die Erziehungswissenschaft, nicht nur in der deutsch-sprachigen Welt, hat sich lange Zeit schwer getan, sich eindeutig zu den brisanten bildungs- als auch sozialpolitischen Fragen der inklusiven Bildung – auch die zentrale Frage der Governance – zu positionieren, weil es das fundamentale Verhältnis von Allgemeiner und Sonderpädagogik hinterfragt sowie in letzter Konsequenz die Transformation des gegliederten und hochgradig selektiven Bildungswesen verlangt. Dieser Band beleuchtet eben dieses Spannungsverhältnis aus verschiedenen Perspektiven; in diesem Beitrag wird deshalb versucht, verschiedene Dimensionen der Governance auf der Forschungsagenda zu platzieren, wie auch in zwei konkreten Fällen – Deutschland und Luxemburg – zu vertiefen. Over the past decade, a flourishing number of concepts and architectural shifts appeared such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industrial CPS or even Industry 4.0. Unfortunately, today’s IoT as well as Industry 4.0 environments, look more like a collection of isolated “Intranets of Things”, also referred to as “vertical silos”, rather than a federated infrastructure. Breaking down these silos is a key challenge in both the IoT and Industry 4.0 communities. This paper is intended to present and discuss two open and standardised mes- saging protocols designed for IoT applications, namely: MQTT and O-MI/O-DF. First, a traffic load’s analytical model derived from the MQTT standard specifications is presented. Second, a comparison study between MQTT and O-MI/O-DF standards is carried out based on a real-life industrial implementation. This study brings a deep understanding of the extent to which these protocols are performant (from a traffic load perspective) and how they can impact on future architectural designs. [less ▲]

In this chapter, I discuss the interplay of urban theory and practice in the context of the science-policy interface: a space of mutual engagement of research and related practices in the urban arena. My case study analyses the work of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (Wissenschaftlicher Beirat der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen, WBGU), most notably its 2016 report on global urbanisation (WBGU 2016). By presenting the big narrative of the planet becoming entirely urbanised, there is a certain positivism and essentialism underlying this report that fails to acknowledge political conflict and what went wrong in the past. This contradicts the lofty political ambitions of the advisory council. I conclude that the WGBU’s policy advice and consultation is limited because it does not consider the murky and messy nature of politics and, thus, does not provide sufficient orientation for practice. This case study therefore illustrates the difficulties and problems when research and practice interact. [less ▲]

Although student self-assessment is positively related to achievement, skepticism about the accuracy of students’ self-assessments remains. A few studies have shown that even elementary school students are able to provide accurate self-assessments when certain conditions are met. We developed an innovative tablet-computer-based tool for capturing self-assessments of mathematics and reading comprehension. This tool integrates the conditions required for accurate self-assessment: (1) a non-competitive setting, (2) items formulated on the task level, and (3) limited reading and no verbalization required. The innovation consists of using illustrations and a language-reduced rating scale. The correlations between students’ self-assessment scores and their standardized test scores were moderate to large. Independent of their proficiency level, students’ confidence in completing a task decreased as task difficulty increased, but these findings were more consistent in mathematics than in reading comprehension. We conclude that third- and fourth-graders have the ability to provide accurate self-assessments of their competencies, particularly in mathematics, when provided with an adequate self-assessment tool. Regulation of gaming is largely based on the perception of gaming-related harm. This perception varies from one country to another and does not necessarily correspond to the real gaming-related harm. It is argued that there is a crucial need to define and assess domains of this harm in order to introduce policies that regulate gaming. Such policies would ideally be targeted at individuals at risk for problematic gaming and would be based more on educational efforts than on restrictive measures. The role of gaming industry in the regulation of gaming would depend on the more precise estimates of gaming-related harm. [less ▲]

Context: Automatically generating test suites is intrinsically a multi-objective problem, as any of the testing targets (e.g, statements to execute or mutants to kill) is an objective on its own. Test suite generation has peculiarities that are quite different from other more regular optimisation problems. For example, given an existing test suite, one can add more tests to cover the remaining objectives. One would like the smallest number of small tests to cover as many objectives as possible, but that is a secondary goal compared to covering those targets in the first place. Furthermore, the amount of objectives in software testing can quickly become unmanageable, in the order of (tens/hundreds of) thousands, especially for system testing of industrial size systems. Objective: To overcome these issues, different techniques have been proposed, like for example the Whole Test Suite (WTS) approach and the Many-Objective Sorting Algorithm (MOSA). However, those techniques might not scale well to very large numbers of objectives and limited search budgets (a typical case in system testing). In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, called Many Independent Objective (MIO) algorithm. This algorithm is designed and tailored based on the specific properties of test suite generation. Method: An empirical study was carried out for test suite generation on a series of artificial examples and seven RESTful API web services. The \evo system test generation tool was used, where MIO, MOSA, WTS and random search were compared. Results: The presented MIO algorithm resulted having the best overall performance, but was not the best on all problems. Conclusion: The novel presented MIO algorithm is a step forward in the automation of test suite generation for system testing. However, there are still properties of system testing that can be exploited to achieve even better results. [less ▲]

We consider the inventory decision of a retailer facing strategic customers. We develop a behavioral theory that accounts for reference dependence, which makes predictions on how the presence of strategic customers leverages retailer behavior. Specifically, the reference-dependent retailer shall decrease her order quantity when there are more strategic customers in the population. As such, the conventional pull-to-center bias for newsvendor is generalized, since the presence of strategic consumers may induce the retailer to pull her order further below the center even when the production cost is low. Furthermore, increasing proportion of strategic customers reduces the retailer's ordering bias under low cost, yet amplifies it when the cost is high. Our subsequent experiments find pull-below-center effect, validate the theoretical predictions, and establish the asymmetry of reference dependence with the estimated behavioral parameters. We also study extensions to our model and carry out robustness checks of our experimental results. [less ▲]
