Floating Content (FC) has recently been proposed as an attractive application for mobile networks, such as VANETs, to operate opportunistic and distributed content sharing over a given geographic area, namely Anchor Zone (AZ). FC performances are tightly dependent on the AZ size, which in literature is classically chosen by the node that generates the floating message. In the present work, we propose a method to improve FC performances by optimizing the AZ size with the support of a Software Defined Network (SDN) controller, which collects mobility information, such as speed and position, of the vehicles in its coverage range. Bridges are an essential part of nowadays infrastructure to cross natural and artificial obstacles like rivers, valleys or other roads and railways. Many concrete bridges were built in the last 70 years. The traffic density has increased immensely over the last decades and the bridges are suffering from corrosion and wear. Nevertheless, the safety of the infrastructure has to be guaranteed and therefore it is very important to find efficient methods for structural health monitoring. For this purpose, visual inspections are the most widely adopted in reality today. Considering the size of most bridge structures, it is understandable that these tests are generally very time-consuming and many personnel are needed, so they are cost-intensive. However, it is not always guaranteed that all damage can be found as only the surface is accessible. For instance, internal damage, such as corrosion of passive reinforcements or prestressed tendons, is difficult to detect. In addition, small cracks can remain undetected when covered by paints or dirt. Therefore, it is important to complement the standard methods with advanced alternatives. The aim is therefore not necessarily to replace visual inspections, but rather to find efficient methods for amendment. An idea being vigorously discussed in the scientific community is based on vibration measurements of a structure to assess its dynamic behaviour. The occurrence of damage will change the system properties, as it changes above all the stiffness distribution. So the system identification process in principle allows detection of changes of eigenfrequencies and hence stiffness. The main problem in practice on real bridges is that the robustness of a method is often insufficient, as the measured parameters are often also influenced by temperature changes. It will be shown that the impact of temperature change, e.g. between night and day, on the system properties is much higher than the influence of small damage. Furthermore, changes in soil and bearing conditions between different seasons can play a role. These environmental effects have to be taken into account while performing measurements for damage assessment. For this purpose, strategies are proposed to compensate environmental effects. Therefore, this thesis focuses on measurements under real environmental conditions, outside a laboratory. Different methods for damage assessment or stiffness tracking based on measured static and on dynamic properties of structures are deployed. Finally, the measured and analysed physical properties of the bridges in this thesis are: eigenfrequencies, mode shapes, sagging under own weight and the deflection line under a static test-loading. These quantities are tracked and artificial damage is introduced stepwise to a test-beam of a real bridge. Damage assessment and localisation is tried directly with the measured quantities but also by model-updating of a finite element model. This solid model is divided in a special way in different slices. It is possible to change the stiffness distribution along the axis of the simulated beam by varying the Young’s moduli of these slices. Furthermore, to reduce the number of free parameters for the subsequent up-dating process, an exponential damage function is introduced that describes the stiffness distribution. At first, the model was designed to fit a healthy reference state. Now measurement data from the artificially damaged test-beam are introduced and the model is updated by changing the Young’s moduli of the slices to minimise a special objective function containing the measured and simulated physical quantities. The comparison of initial and updated model allows a quantification and localisation of damage. Finally, the slice width is reduced around the identified damage region to improve the process. The main purpose of this study was to examine the specific contributions of rapid automatized naming (RAN) measures with different visually presented stimuli (e.g., vowels, consonants, digits) to reading outcomes in first and second grade. Previous studies have shown that RAN is an independent and robust predictor for reading skills in children. Less research investigated the incremental contributions of distinct RAN measures to reading skills in beginning readers. Ninety-three children from kindergarten and first grade completed four different RAN measures involving color, digit, vowel, and consonant naming at the end of the school year. Six months later these children were either in first or in second grade and completed several reading measures. The results emphasize that vowel RAN was a strong and unique predictor for reading accuracy in first grade. Vowel RAN and digit RAN were both significant predictors for reading speed in second grade. The current findings underline that vowel RAN is a promising predictor for reading outcomes (i.e., accuracy and speed) at the beginning of elementary school. RAN performance did however not significantly predict second grade reading comprehension. Results and practical implications will be discussed. [less ▲]

Yu Hua’s novels, especially "To Live" (活着) und "Brothers" (兄弟), are characterized by their preference for grotesque scenes in which protagonists face situations of humiliation and degradation. In "Brothers", the protagonist Song Gang has to undergo a surgery and becomes provided with female breasts, in order to promote an ointment for breast augmentation. According to Mikhail Bakhtin, the deformation of the human body is typical for grotesque humor (as can be shown in Rabelais). Bakthin's description of grotesque humor, however, reveals a certain affinity towards totalitarian politics, and this is certainly true also for Yu Hua. In his novels, grotesque Humor is associated with a political situation in which human dignity is constantly getting undermined. As Yan Lianke puts it, living in modern china is categorically "without dignity": This statement is confirmed in Yu Hua’s novels. The texts deal with the protagonists’ search for dignity, and at the same time they explore the possibility of critical writing under conditions of political control. [less ▲]

Biomechanical characteristics of 5 tibial osteotomy plates for the treatment of medial knee joint osteoarthritis were examined. Fourth-generation tibial bone composites underwent a medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy, using TomoFix™ standard, PEEKPower®, ContourLock®, TomoFix™ small stature plates, and iBalance® implants. Static compression load to failure and load-controlled cyclic fatigue failure tests were performed. All plates had sufficient stability up to 2400 N in the static compression load to failure tests. Screw breakage in the iBalance® group and opposite cortex fractures in all constructs occurred at lower loading conditions. The highest fatigue strength in terms of maximal load and number of cycles performed prior to failure was observed for the ContourLock® group followed by the iBalance® implants, the TomoFix™ standard and small stature plates. PEEKPower® had the lowest fatigue strength. All plates showed sufficient stability under static loading. Compared to the TomoFix™ and the PEEKPower® plates, the ContourLock® plate and iBalance® implant showed a higher mechanical fatigue strength during cyclic fatigue testing, suggesting that both mechanical static and fatigue strength increase with a wider proximal T‑shaped plate design together with diverging proximal screws. Mechanical strength of the bone–implant constructs decreases with a narrow T‑shaped proximal end design and converging proximal screws (TomoFix™) or a short vertical plate design (PEEKPower®). Published results indicate high fusion rates and good clinical results with the TomoFix™ plate, which is contrary to our findings. A certain amount of interfragmentary motion rather than high mechanical strength and stiffness seem to be important for bone healing which is outside the scope of this paper. [less ▲]

In this paper, the authors present a Two-Step approach that sequentially adjusts generation and distribution values of the (dynamic) OD matrix. While the proposed methodology already provided excellent results for updating demand flows on a motorway, the aim of this paper is to validate this conclusion on a real network: Luxembourg City. This network represents the typical middle-sized European city in terms of network dimension. Moreover, Luxembourg City has the typical structure of a metropolitan area, composed of a city centre, ring, and suburb areas. An innovative element of this paper is to use mobile network data to create a time-dependent profile of the generated demand inside and outside the ring. To support the claim that the model is ready for practical implementation, it is interfaced with PTV Visum, one of the most widely adopted software tools for traffic analysis. Results of these experiments provide a solid empirical ground in order to further develop this model and to understand if its assumptions hold for urban scenarios. [less ▲]

A specific set of brainstem nuclei are susceptible to degeneration in Parkinson’s disease. We hypothesise that neuronal vulnerability reflects shared phenotypic characteristics that confer selective vulnerability to degeneration. Neuronal phenotypic specification is mainly the cumulative result of a transcriptional regulatory program that is active during the development. By manual curation of the developmental biology literature, we comprehensively reconstructed an anatomically resolved cellular developmental lineage for the adult neurons in five brainstem regions that are selectively vulnerable to degeneration in prodromal or early Parkinson’s disease. We synthesised the literature on transcription factors that are required to be active, or required to be inactive, in the development of each of these five brainstem regions, and at least two differentially vulnerable nuclei within each region. Certain transcription factors, e.g., Ascl1 and Lmx1b, seem to be required for specification of many brainstem regions that are susceptible to degeneration in early Parkinson’s disease. Some transcription factors can even distinguish between differentially vulnerable nuclei within the same brain region, e.g., Pitx3 is required for specification of the substantia nigra pars compacta, but not the ventral tegmental area. We do not suggest that Parkinson’s disease is a developmental disorder. In contrast, we consider identification of shared developmental trajectories as part of a broader effort to identify the molecular mechanisms that underlie the phenotypic features that are shared by selectively vulnerable neurons. Systematic in vivo assessment of fate determining transcription factors should be completed for all neuronal populations vulnerable to degeneration in early Parkinson’s disease. [less ▲]

The usages and functionalities of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have grown rapidly during the last years. They are being engaged in many types of missions, ranging from military to agriculture passing by entertainment and rescue or even delivery. Nonetheless, for being able to perform such tasks, UAVs have to navigate safely in an often dynamic and partly unknown environment. This brings many challenges to overcome, some of which can lead to damages or degradations of different body parts. Thus, new tools and methods are required to allow the successful analysis and identification of the different threats that UAVs have to manage during their missions or flights. Various approaches, addressing this domain, have been proposed. However, most of them typically identify the changes in the UAVs behavior rather than the issue. This work presents an approach, which focuses not only on identifying degradations of UAVs during flights, but estimate the source of the failure as well. [less ▲]

We show that characterizing the effects of housing on portfolios requires distinguishing between the effects of home equity and mortgage debt. We isolate exogenous variation in home equity and mortgages by using differences across housing markets in house prices and housing supply elasticities as instruments. Increases in property value (holding home equity constant) reduce stockholdings, while increases in home equity wealth (holding property value constant) raise stockholdings. The stock share of liquid wealth would rise by 1 percentage point—6% of the mean stock share—if a household were to spend 10% less on its house, holding fixed wealth. [less ▲]

Background: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an IL-1β-dependent autoinflammatory disease caused by mutations of Mediterranean fever (MEFV) encoding pyrin and characterized by inflammatory attacks induced by physical or psychological stress. Objective: We investigated the underlying mechanism that links stress-induced inflammatory attacks with neutrophil activation and release of IL-1β-bearing neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in patients with FMF. Methods: RNA sequencing was performed in peripheral neutrophils from 3 patients with FMF isolated both during attacks and remission, 8 patients in remission, and 8 healthy subjects. NET formation and proteins were analyzed by using confocal immunofluorescence microscopy, immunoblotting, myeloperoxidase-DNA complex ELISA, and flow cytometry. Samples from patients with Still's disease and bacterial infections were used also. Results: The stress-related protein regulated in development and DNA damage responses 1 (REDD1) is significantly overexpressed during FMF attacks. Neutrophils from patients with FMF during remission are resistant to autophagy-mediated NET release, which can be overcome through REDD1 induction. Stress-related mediators (eg, epinephrine) decrease this threshold, leading to autophagy-driven NET release, whereas the synchronous inflammatory environment of FMF attack leads to intracellular production of IL-1β and its release through NETs. REDD1 in autolysosomes colocalizes with pyrin and nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat/pyrin domain-containing 3. Mutated pyrin prohibits this colocalization, leading to higher IL-1β levels on NETs. Conclusions: This study provides a link between stress and initiation of inflammatory attacks in patients with FMF. REDD1 emerges as a regulator of neutrophil function upstream to pyrin, is involved in NET release and regulation of IL-1β, and might constitute an important piece in the IL-1β-mediated inflammation puzzle. © 2017 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. The transcription factor p73 is homologous to the well-known tumor-suppressor p53. The p73-regulated networks are of significant clinical interest, because they may substitute for impaired p53-regulated networks which are commonly perturbed in cancer. Herein, we aimed to characterize a p73-regulated network that mediates cell migration and restores anti-oncogenic responses in p53-mutant cancer cells. In this study, we demonstrate that p73 regulates a network underlying cell migration, which consists of MIR34A/MIR3158/vimentin/β-catenin/lef1. The p73 isoforms transactivate the miRNA components (MIR34A/MIR3158) of this network, which in turn, downregulate their EMT-related mRNA co-targets (vimentin/β-catenin/lef1) to decrease cell-migration. Modulation of this network, by increasing the level of the novel p73-dependent target MIR3158, was found to induce anti-oncogenic/anti-invasive responses in p53-mutant cancer cells. Taken together, a p73-regulated, MIR3158-containing, network restores anti-invasive phenotypes in p53-mutant cancer cells; this property could be exploited towards the development of anticancer therapeutics. © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd [less ▲]
