Objective The aim of the present study is to examine the heterogeneity of attenuated psychotic symptoms (PS) and related personality factors using a cluster analytic approach. Method A large sample of participants from the general population was evaluated in terms of attenuated symptomatology (psychotic and affective) and two personality factors: encoding style and impulsivity traits. Results Cluster analysis emphasized the existence of five independent clusters: High Psychosis, High Positive, High Negative, High Impulsive-Low Psychosis, and Low Psychosis. Cluster comparisons demonstrated that the personality factors and PS are differentially involved in the clusters. Conclusions The present study demonstrated that reliable and relatively distinct clusters of individuals from the general population can be identified based on established PS and related personality factors. The fact that a variety of profiles was observed contributes to a better understanding of the nature of the heterogeneity characterizing PS and has clear theoretical and clinical implications. Given that the use of educational technologies is increasingly popular in kindergarten and among young students, these technologies have been shown to be able to solve the difficulties (existing in school) that are either not possible to be solved in traditional schooling or cost a lot of time and resources. In this paper, we present a pedagogical training and learning application called MaGrid (Math on Grid), which has been developed to foster early mathematical skills in pre-schoolers. MaGrid is a tablet-based application, which provides a wide range of training tasks targeting fundamental mathematical concepts for the preschool level. The language-neutral property of MaGrid is an innovative aspect that makes MaGrid different from existing mathematical training applications. This property may reduce the barrier of language from mathematical education for second language learners encountered in multilingual school settings. MaGrid allows individual learning in an interactive way and provides real-time feedback. Moreover, MaGrid is capable of recording students’ activities while working on the training tasks, which can help teachers and parents keep track of a student’s progress in different tasks and observe potential training-related improvements over time. Finally, we describe a series of experiments carried out using the MaGrid application during special training and assessment sessions in several preschools in Luxembourg. [less ▲]

Video games have been labeled a male space, and playing video games an activity created by men and for men (Fox & Tang, 2014; see also Lange & Schwab, this volume). The present chapter analyses the typical roles of male and female video game characters, their presentation in games, their effects, and how players perceive these characters. To this end, gender in video games will be analyzed on different levels. Although women and men share the same overall interest in playing video games as a medium for entertainment, they differ substantially with regard to genres and game titles they prefer. These gender differences have been attributed to the overrepresentation of male characters in video games, uninviting game contents that strongly rely on competition and physical aggression, and the stereotypical portrayal and scripted behavioral patterns of hyper-masculine or “macho” male and sexualized female game characters. The issue of gender portrayals in video games will be discussed in the light of theoretical considerations on evolved dispositions that differ by sex versus the social structural account that attributes sex differences to the differing placement of women and men in the social structure. It will be argued that both theoretical approaches make similar predictions regarding gender-specific video game preferences. [less ▲]

L'objectif de cet article est de mettre en évidence les différentes incertitudes que l'on rencontre lorsque l'on tente d'assurer l'application de leurs droits fondamentaux aux utilisateurs de FinTech. La protection des données et plus particulièrement les dispositions du Règlement Général sur la Protection des Données sont utilisées comme exemples dans cet article, afin d'illustrer les difficultés rencontrées. Ici, trois principales interrogations sont abordées: celles concernant les destinataires des dispositions du Règlement Général sur la Protection des Données, celles concernant les différences de traitement prévues par le Règlement Général sur la Protection des Données pour les données personnelles, pseudonymisées et les informations anonymes et enfin celles concernant la qualification des données disponibles sur des blockchains publiques et privées. Finalement cet article met en évidence les conséquences que ces incertitudes peuvent avoir sur la protection des droits fondamentaux des utilisateurs de FinTech ainsi que la nécessité d'assurer la sécurité juridique grâce à des instructions supplémentaires provenant du législateur européen ou grâce à la jurisprudence à venir. En novembre 1910, le Journal des Tribunaux, principal organe d’information des juristes belges, qualifie la partie wallonne du Kreis allemand de Malmedy de « notre Alsace-Lorraine » où se trouveraient des « frères de race et de langue, exilés et emprisonnés en Prusse. » Le 20 septembre 1920, ce Kreis ainsi que celui d’Eupen, presque exclusivement germanophone, sont rattachés à la Belgique, suite au traité de Versailles et à un simulacre de consultation populaire. Notre contribution qui traitera de la période qui s’étend de l’occupation de la région par des troupes belges en août 1919 à la fin du régime transitoire en mars 1925, analyse la signification de la référence à l’Alsace-Lorraine pendant cette phase du changement de la nationalité. Elle montre que cette référence n’est pas limitée aux discours de légitimation de l’annexion du territoire par la Belgique, mais que les autorités belges ont, à certaines occasions (comme l’introduction du service militaire), contacté leurs homologues français afin de connaître la politique d’intégration menée en Alsace-Lorraine. Par l’étude systématique de la référence idéelle et pratique à l’Alsace-Lorraine, la présente contribution fournit une contribution à une histoire comparée de la transition étatique dans les deux territoires. In this work, a new partition-collocation strategy for the parallel execution of CFD–DEM couplings is investigated. Having a good parallel performance is a key issue for an Eulerian-Lagrangian software that aims to be applied to solve industrially significant problems, as the computational cost of these couplings is one of their main drawback. The approach presented here consists in co-locating the overlapping parts of the simulation domain of each software on the same MPI process, in order to reduce the cost of the data exchanges. It is shown how this strategy allows reducing memory consumption and inter-process communication between CFD and DEM to a minimum and therefore to overcome an important parallelization bottleneck identified in the literature. Three benchmarks are proposed to assess the consistency and scalability of this approach. A coupled execution on 280 cores shows that less than 0.1% of the time is used to perform inter-physics data exchange. [less ▲]

This study demonstrates the different effects of unmodelled (sub-)daily tidal displacement in Global Positioning System (GPS) and GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) coordinate time-series. The results show that more than two propagated periodic signals appear in GPS and GLONASS Precise Point Positioning (PPP) coordinate time-series in the presence of an unmodelled M2 /O1 tidal displacements as a result of a non-overlapping 24-hr data sampling. To summarize the propagated periodic signals at the fortnightly period, an unmodelled M2 tidal displacement propagates predominately into two long-period signals at 13.6x (x is a positive integer) and 14.76 d for GPS, while only one significant propagated periodic signal at 14.76 d is discernible for GLONASS. Similarly, significant propagated periodic signals at 13.6x and 14.19 d for GPS and only at 14.19 d for GLONASS are evident as a result of an unmodelled O1 tidal displacement. However, an unmodelled M f (long- period) signal results in a strong power of similar magnitude at 13.6x d (∼13.66 d) for both GPS and GLONASS solutions. The appearance of different periodic signals as a result of the same unmodelled tidal displacement is attributed to the different ground repeat periods of the constellations. The latter is likely to explain the reason why the 13.6x-d fortnightly signal is present only in GPS solutions. Comparing the powers of the M2 propagated periodic signals at 13.6x and 14.76 d on average from 32 globally distributed stations, the amplitude of the former is larger than for the latter by an order of magnitude. The results of this study demonstrate that the 13.6x-d periodic signal in GPS/GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) derived products is a joint contribution of the propagation of unmodelled (sub-)daily tidal displacements and errors at longer periods with the former appearing to contribute more. Significant reduction of the propagated periodic signals is achieved from combined-system solutions where including Galileo (the European GNSS) to the combined solution already shows benefits by reducing the effect even before the system has reached its full constellation. Combined GNSS solutions will benefit the applications of GNSS time-series for retrieving tidal harmonic signals such as Mf as they reduce constellation specific propagation effects. [less ▲]

Competition—regional, national, organizational, and individual—has become more potent—with performance measures, comparative indicators, and formal evaluations continuously generated and used in decision-making. Simultaneously, collaboration across institutional, disciplinary, organizational, and cultural boundaries expands the possibilities of discovery and produces the most influential science. Competition and collaboration at the nexus of higher education and science demand enhanced attention as they shape the future of scientific innovation and production, with its understudied yet increasingly incontrovertible effects on individuals and societies. This paper discusses the institutionalization of inclusive education in Switzerland’s different regions. Various concepts of Neo-Institutionalism were applied to analyse institutional change in Switzerland’s regionally-varying federal education systems. The key indicator is the school segregation rate of pupils in the 26 Kantone of Switzerland from 1999-2016. We find that inclusive education is differently understood and negotiated. In fact, no unified praxis across the Kantone follows from national inclusive education reforms. Between the global norm of inclusive education as a human right and the incremental, path-dependent change of complex education systems with their highly differentiated special education programs, we find not only mechanisms of decoupling, but also persistent educational inequalities. Evident in the paradoxical increase of segregation in some Kantone, we find no convergence towards inclusion across Switzerland’s regions. [less ▲]

Software engineering is not only an increasingly challenging endeavor that goes beyond the intellectual capabilities of any single individual engineer, but is also an intensely human one. Tools and methods to develop software are employed by engineers of varied backgrounds within a large variety of organizations and application domains. As a result, the variation in challenges and practices in system requirements, architecture, and quality assurance is staggering. Human, domain and organizational factors define the context within which software engineering methodologies and technologies are to be applied and therefore the context that research needs to account for, if it is to be impactful. This paper provides an assessment of the current challenges faced by software engineering research in achieving its potential, a description of the root causes of such challenges, and a proposal for the field to move forward and become more impactful through collaborative research and innovation between public research and industry.
