We investigate the class of binary associative and quasitrivial operations on a given finite set. Here quasitriviality (also known as conserva-tiveness) means that the operation always outputs one of its input values. We also examine the special situations where the operations are commutative and nondecreasing. In the latter case, these operations reduce to discrete uninorms, which are discrete fuzzy connectives that play an important role in fuzzy logic. As we will see nondecreasing, associative and quasitrivial operations are chara-cterized in terms of total and weak orderings through the so-called single-peakedness property introduced in social choice theory by Duncan Black. This will enable visual interpretaions of the above mentioned algebraic properties. Motivated by these results, we will also address a number of counting issues: we enumerate all binary associative and quasitrivial operations on a given finite set as well as of those operations that are commutative, are nondecreasing, have neutral and/or annihilator elements. As we will see, these considerations lead to several, previously unknown, integer sequences. [less ▲]

The increasing accuracy of indoor positioning systems makes their evaluation an increasingly challenging task. A number of factors are already known to affect performance of fingerprint-based systems: hardware diversity, device orientation, environment dynamics. This paper presents a new butterfly-like effect in localization experiments. The effect is caused by minor ground truth (GT) errors --- that is, small deviations between calibration and test positions. While such deviations are widely considered as purely additive and thus negligible, we demonstrate that even centimeter-scale GT errors are amplified by small-scale radio fading and lead to severe multi-meter Wi-Fi positioning errors. The results show that fingerprint-based localization accuracy quickly deteriorates as GT errors increase towards 0.4 wavelength (5 cm for 2.4 GHz). Beyond that threshold, system's accuracy saturates to about one-third of its original level achievable with precise GT. This effect challenges the impact of the already known accuracy-limiting factors (such as cross-user tests, receiver diversity, device orientation and temporal variations), as they can be partially explained by minor GT errors. Moreover, for smartphone-in-a-hand experiments, this effect directly associates the evaluation outcomes with experimenters' diligence. [less ▲]

Despite the decades of efforts, indoor positioning remains an open research challenge. While existing solutions already demonstrate high accuracy, their in-building infrastructure --- such as Wi-Fi access points or Bluetooth beacons --- provides only a limited coverage. This paper investigates feasibility of accurate indoor positioning using broadcast digital TV signals, readily available in populated areas worldwide. We experiment with the classic received signal strength (RSS) fingerprinting, and introduce a novel approach based on channel state information (CSI), which leverages frequency-selective multipath fading of wideband TV signals. The proposed methods are experimentally evaluated on an extensive dataset of DVB-T signals, systematically collected in two large buildings over the course of 8 months. The results show that the proposed approach consistently outperforms RSS fingerprinting and achieves 92--98% localization accuracy. While this study is based on the European DVB-T signals, the proposed method is directly generalizable to other TV standards (such as ATSC, ISDB, DTMB and DMB) and wide-area TV white space (TVWS) networks. This contribution frames the notions of inclusion and mental health by describing trends in European societies at the social and economic level that will have direct consequences for a participative civil society and social cohesion. Our starting point is the observation that the world faces challenges at the start of the 21st century that are new and unprecedented in its history. The four global forces that break all the trends known so far in human history include urbanisation, accelerating technological development, greater global connections, and population ageing (Dobbs, Manyika and Woetzel, 2016). We will first describe the scale of population ageing, as ageing populutions characterize several developed economies. In a second step, we will highlight some consequences of population ageing for social welfare and in a third part I will elaborate on the notion of justice and inclusion in rapidly changing societies. Aim: Most of the research on self-efficacy in children with specific learning disorders has focused on inter-group comparisons, showing that these children hold lower self-efficacy scores than their normally developing peers. As these lower scores might be due to a reduced access to self-efficacy sources (Hampton & Mason, 2003), this small-scale study (N=18) aimed to investigate whether the time of diagnosis might modulate the access to these sources within a group of dyslexic adolescents, either diagnosed in primary or secondary school but paired on chronological age and duration of remedial training. Methods: Mixed methods were employed by using general as well as academic and social self-efficacy scales, complemented by semi-structured interviews investigating students’ understanding and acceptance of their dyslexia. Results: The findings showed that early-diagnosed students hold higher general and academic scores. Further analyses regarding students’ personal statements revealed a statistically significant association between time of diagnosis and understanding as well as tolerance of dyslexia, indicating that early-diagnosed adolescents, compared to their late-diagnosed peers, have a more cohesive understanding and more adequate representations of their reading disorder as specific and non-stigmatizing, all the while being more tolerant and open about announcing their dyslexia to others. Conclusions: An early diagnosis of dyslexia is thus associated with a better understanding and acceptance of the disorder, possibly serving as a protective factor which can consequently contribute to higher general and academic self-efficacy scores. Hence, these findings not only extend the literature on self-efficacy beliefs in dyslexia by investigating the time of diagnosis, but also have important practical implications, highlighting the significance of an early diagnosis beyond the benefits of early rehabilitation as well as the potentially negative psychological consequences of a late diagnosis. Ambient indoor localization - an approach that leverages ambient radio signals - has been previously shown to provide promising positioning performance using the globally available infrastructure of FM, TV and cellular stations. However, the need for specialized equipment and laborious data collection constitute a high entry barrier for follow-up studies. This paper presents AmbiLoc - a dataset of radio signals for ambient indoor localization research. The dataset has been systematically collected in multiple testbeds, including large-scale and multi-floor buildings, over the course of one year. Due to the use of a software-defined radio receiver, raw signal samples in AmbiLoc allow extraction of arbitrary fingerprinting features. The first edition of AmbiLoc, introduced in this paper, includes received signals strength (RSS) fingerprints of FM, TV and GSM signals, along with the relevant metadata (such as weather conditions). The dataset is available online at AmbiLoc.org. As the first public dataset of ambient localization signals, AmbiLoc provides an easy entry and a common reference for researchers exploring novel indoor localization methods. [less ▲]

Die internationale Ausrichtung von Städten wirkt sich vielfach als Problem für Wohnungsmärkte aus. Die steigende Nachfrage führt zu Angebotsverknappungen und direkten wie indirekten Folgeeffekten im Markt insgesamt. Auf diese Weise entwickelt sich das Wohnungswesen zunehmend kritisch. Der Beitrag diskutiert dieses Problem am empirischen Beispiel Luxemburgs, einem stark internationalisierten Kleinstaat und bedeutenden Finanz- und EU-Standort. In Luxemburg gilt der Erwerb von Wohneigentum zwecks Wertsteigerung nach wie vor als Credo einer stark liberalistisch geprägten, konservativen Wohnungsbaupolitik. Zugleich stellt dies für viele Luxemburger als auch für die stetig wachsende Anzahl der im Großherzogtum ansässigen Ausländer die Grundlage für lukrative Vermögensanlagen dar. Seit der globalen Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise steht die Anwerbung ausländischer Investoren zunehmend auf der wirtschaftspolitischen Agenda. Die ökonomische Stabilität des Landes und die relative Sicherheit von Immobilieninvestitionen fördern diese Entwicklung. Öffentlicher Wohnungsbau ist nach wie vor eine Randerscheinung. Die einzige Antwort, die in dieser Situation zu einem Konsens führt, sind Baulückenprogramme, verdichtetes Wohnen und urbane Großprojekte. Diese profitorientierte Wirtschaftsentwicklung ist im europäischen Kontext nicht einzigartig. Sie führte jedoch in diesem spezifischen Fall in der Vergangenheit zu beispiellosen Folgen: Bezogen auf die geringe Größe des Landes und im Licht eines starken, primär migrationsbedingten Bevölkerungsanstiegs, wachsender Einkommensunterschiede und einem immer stärker werdenden Nachfrageüberhang, wird bezahlbarer Wohnraum zunehmend knapp. Dieser Trend zeichnet sich nicht nur im Ballungsgebiet der Hauptstadt ab, sondern indes auch in ländlich geprägten, peripheren Gebieten des Kleinstaats. Bisher vorherrschende Machtverhältnisse, Ideologien und Kulturen geraten immer mehr unter Druck. Spannungen zwischen Mehrheiten und Minderheiten, Eigentümern und Mietern werden immer deutlicher, aber deren Aushandlung spielt sich oftmals in einem Vakuum ab. Die Verschuldung der Haushalte steigt weiter an. Nach der globalen Finanzkrise haben sich jedoch einige bottom-up Wohnungsbauinitiativen gegründet. Sie tragen dazu bei, den Diskurs über die Wohnungsfrage öffentlich auszutragen und bieten somit die Chance für die Etablierung von alternativen Wohnmodellen. Die Aushandlungsprozesse um diese neuen Bewältigungsstrategien finden jedoch statt in einem Setting, in dem die Devise „der Markt wird es schon richten“ seit Jahren die Politik (beg)leitet. Ihre Implementation ist langwierig. Die Kombination von sozioökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen, starken Interessengruppen sowie informellen Arrangements hat zu institutionellen Lock-Ins geführt, die eine Hürde für die Etablierung von Alternativen darstellen. Objective: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) is a common epilepsy syndrome that is often poorly controlled by antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment. Comparative AED effectiveness studies in this condition are lacking. Wereport retention, efficacy, and tolerability in a cohort of patients with MTLE-HS. Methods: Clinical data were collected from a European database of patients with epilepsy. We estimated retention, 12-month seizure freedom, and adverse drug reaction (ADR) rates for the 10 most commonly used AEDs in patients with MTLE-HS. Results: Seven hundred sixty-seven patients with a total of 3,249 AED trials were included. The highest 12-month retention rates were observed with carbamazepine (85.9%), valproate (85%), and clobazam (79%). Twelve-month seizure freedom rates varied from 1.2% for gabapentin and vigabatrin to 11% for carbamazepine. Response rates were highest for AEDs that were prescribed as initial treatment and lowest for AEDs that were used in a third or higher instance. ADRs were reported in 47.6% of patients, with the highest rates observed with oxcarbazepine (35.7%), topiramate (30.9%), and pregabalin (27.4%), and the lowest rates with clobazam (6.5%), gabapentin (8.9%), and lamotrigine (16.6%). The most commonly reported ADRs were lethargy and drowsiness, dizziness, vertigo and ataxia, and blurred vision and diplopia. Significance: Our results did not demonstrate any clear advantage of newer versus older AEDs. Our results provide useful insights into AED retention, efficacy, and ADR rates in patients with MTLE-HS. We present a Monte Carlo simulation study of suspensions of hard ellipsoids of revolution. Based on the spatial fluctuations of the orientational order, we have computed the Frank elastic constants for prolate and oblate ellipsoids and compared them to the affine transformation model. The affine transformation model predicts the right order of magnitude of the twist and bend constant but not of the splay constant. In addition, we report the observation of a stable nematic phase at an aspect ratio as low as 2.5. [less ▲]

Precision medicine is an emerging paradigm that aims at maximizing the benefits and minimizing the adverse effects of drugs. Realistic mechanistic models are needed to understand and limit heterogeneity in drug responses. While pharmacokinetic models describe in detail a drug's absorption and metabolism, they generally do not account for individual variations in response to environmental influences, in addition to genetic variation. For instance, the human gut microbiota metabolizes drugs and is modulated by diet, and it exhibits significant variation among individuals. However, the influence of the gut microbiota on drug failure or drug side effects is under-researched. Here, we review recent advances in computational modeling approaches that could contribute to a better, mechanism-based understanding of drug–microbiota–diet interactions and their contribution to individual drug responses. By integrating systems biology and quantitative systems pharmacology with microbiology and nutrition, the conceptually and technologically demand for novel approaches could be met to enable the study of individual variability, thereby providing breakthrough support for progress in precision medicine. While indoor positioning systems aspire for higher accuracy, their coverage is typically limited to buildings with dedicated hardware. A possible alternative is offered by infrastructure-free positioning methods. In particular, several studies have demonstrated feasibility of indoor positioning using broadcast FM radio signals, which are available in most populated areas worldwide. However, previous work provides little information about long-term performance of FM-based indoor localization. This paper presents a longitudinal study of FM indoor positioning based on received signal strength (RSS) fingerprinting. We evaluate system's performance on a large dataset of real-world FM signals, systematically collected in several large-scale multi-floor testbeds over the course of 9 months. We also investigate the impact of different classifiers, training schedules and fingerprint sizes on localization accuracy. The results demonstrate that well-trained FM-based system can provide reliable indoor positioning even several months after deployment. [less ▲]

Model transformations play a key role in model driven software engineering approaches. Validation of model transformations is crucial for the quality assurance of software systems to be constructed. The relational logic based specification language Alloy and its accompanying tool the Alloy Analyzer have been used in the past to validate properties of model transformations. However Alloy based analysis of transformations suffers from several limitations. On one hand, it is time consuming and does not scale well. On the other hand, the reliance on Alloy, being a formal method, prevents the effective involvement of domain experts in the validation process which is crucial for pinpointing domain pertinent errors. Those limitations are even more severe when it comes to transformations whose input and/or output are themselves transformations (called compound transformations) because they are inherently more complex. To tackle the performance and scalability limitations, in previous work, we proposed an Alloy-based Domain Specific Language (DSL), called F-Alloy, that is tailored for model transformation specifications. Instead of pure analysis based validation, F-Alloy speeds up the validation of model transformations by applying a hybrid strategy that combines analysis with interpretation. In this paper, we formalize the notion of “hybrid analysis” and further extended it to also support efficient validation of compound transformations. To enable the effective involvement of domain experts in the validation process, we propose in this paper a new approach to model transformation validation, called Visualization-Based Validation (briefly VBV). Following VBV, representative instances of a to-be-validated model transformation are automatically generated by hybrid analysis and shown to domain experts for feedback in a visual notation that they are familiar with. We prescribe a process to guide the application of VBV to model transformations and illustrate it with a benchmark model transformation. [less ▲]
