Attention plays a pivotal role in the experience of pain and its impact upon daily activities. Accordingly, research on the interplay between attention and pain has a long scientific history. Within this chapter, we discuss the theoretical frameworks that aim to explain the relationship between attention and pain. We argue for a motivational perspective on pain that highlights the critical role of cognitive, affective and contextual factors in explaining the interplay between attention and pain. To substantiate this argument, we provide an overview of available research addressing the bottom-up capture of attention by pain and the top-down modulation (both inhibition and facilitation) of attention for pain. We conclude this chapter with guidelines and suggestions for future research and discuss clinical implications of adopting a motivational perspective on pain. [less ▲]

Accuracy in assessing academic achievement and potential is a core component of teachers’ diagnostic competence. Large-scale studies in the Luxembourgish and German educational systems show that teachers’ secondary school track decisions are biased by a student’s social background. Therefore, biased assessment of students may contribute to the social inequalities observed in secondary schools in both countries. Within a social cognitive framework of dual-process theories, bias is explained by heuristic information processing, which, in contrast to information-integrating processing, relies on stereotype-based expectations to form judgments about students. A series of experimental studies investigated the information processing strategies of teachers, identifying a low accountability of the decision setting and a high consistency of student information as key moderators that promote stereotype-based information processing strategies in teachers’ school track decisions. Similar effects were shown for novice teachers at the beginning of their professional career. Further research evaluated intervention modules based on increased accountability, feedback, and increased knowledge about judgment formation processes. Results demonstrated that all evaluated intervention modules led to higher judgment accuracy and more information-integrating processing. Reviewing current models of teachers’ diagnostic competence, the findings on teachers’ information processing emphasized the need to include situational and process-oriented components into models of diagnostic competence. Beside a cognitive component – the ability to form accurate and unbiased judgments – diagnostic competence includes an adaptive choice of information processing strategies, depending on the accountability and information consistency of the judgment setting. Results on intervention modules gave insights how to increase diagnostic competence in teacher education programs. [less ▲]

We compute the equivariant K-homology of the classifying space for proper actions, for cocompact 3-dimensional hyperbolic reflection groups. This coincides with the topological K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra associated to the group, via the Baum-Connes conjecture. We show that, for any such reflection group, the associated K-theory groups are torsion-free. This means that we can complete previous computations with rational coefficients to get results with integral coefficients. On the way, we establish an efficient criterion for checking torsion-freeness of K-theory groups, which can be applied far beyond the scope of the present paper. [less ▲]

Attentional strategies, such as distraction and sensory monitoring, are often offered to reduce pain and pain-related distress. However, evidence for their efficacy in chronic pain patients is equivocal. We report a meta-analysis on the efficacy of distraction and sensory monitoring in chronic pain patients, and explore possible methodological and theoretical moderators. The scientific literature was searched for relevant articles, which were coded for methodological quality and several theoretical and methodological moderator variables. Only 10 articles fulfilled the search criteria. Eight studies allowed us to compare distraction with a control condition, two studies to compare sensory monitoring with a control condition, and four studies to compare the effect of distraction with the effect of sensory monitoring. Overall, results indicate that distraction did not differ from control in altering pain experience (k=8; Hedges’ g=0.10, ns) and distress (k=2; Hedges’ g=0.549). Sensory monitoring did also not alter pain experience (k=2; Hedges’ g=-.21, ns) and distress (k=1; Hedges’ g=-0.191, ns). We found no evidence to support the superiority of distraction or sensory monitoring in altering pain compared to control conditions. We offer guidance for future theory-driven research to investigate distraction and sensory monitoring in this largely unexplored field, albeit one replete with methodological difficulties. [less ▲]

A novel multiscale approach for three-phase flows is presented. The goal of the proposed method is to solve arbitrary three-phase flow configurations in a computationally efficient way, and in particular taking into account the effects of different length scales while sharply reducing the computational burden. This is particularly important in chemical, environmental, and process engineering, where large-scale quantities are normally of interest, but small-scale dynamics cannot be neglected. The method is based on the definition of two different length scales: the bulk scale, and the fluid fine scale. A dual-grid approach is adopted in order to resolve the bulk scale with information from the fluid fine scale. It is shown that the described method succeeds in delivering more accuracy than a standard approach based on the volume averaging technique, still, it remains suitable for the solution of real interest problems. The method is shown to successfully satisfy experimental results presented in the literature. Examples of three-phase flows simulations are provided to show how the proposed numerical approach can describe the physics of particle-laden, free surface flows with competitive computational cost. It is shown how the proposed method can naturally extend the DEM-VOF method to the presence of complex interface dynamics. [less ▲]

This study on metacognition of time examined the confidence judgment in the temporal generalization task when the difficulty of temporal discrimination increased, in three different standard duration conditions. The results showed that participants’ confidence judgments were accurate for all comparison durations similar to the standard duration and varied only for the comparison durations shorter or longer than the standard duration. The confidence judgment did not change with the standard duration condition; except for an overconfidence level for the comparison durations longer than the standard in the shortest standard duration condition. Moreover, the results showed that the overconfidence level increases with the increase in temporal discrimination difficulty, although an underconfidence level was found but only for the shortest comparison durations. The implication in terms of decision processes for the generalization temporal task and in terms of metacognitive processes are discussed. [less ▲]

Community low carbon transitions – studies of the ways in which community is used to pursue environmental aims and objectives – are closely linked to arrangements of energy production and use. Community is used as a way to pursue particular energy agendas. Yet, as is often pointed out, the trajectory of transitions imagined, the ambitiousness of the envisioned transformation, and especially the implied community invoked within this, all remain gloriously inconsistent. Within community transitions attention increasingly focuses on the tensions emerging or smoothed over as competing agendas are brought together through capacious words and concepts: for example between so-called top-down government deployed community, and so-called bottom-up emergent community action. This paper offers one way to explain and explore these tensions, where they come from and, thus, help in understanding ways in which they may be overcome. Using the case study of an attempt to target one ‘street community’s’ environmental footprint in Scotland, the paper argues for taking an explicitly geographical and spatial lens to analyse these processes. The paper uses three forms of space—perceived space, conceived space, and lived space—to outline how three distinct but overlapping communities were spatialised. The contention of the paper is that tensions in community transitions often result from different spatial imaginaries, informing one’s approach to, and ‘common sense’ understanding of, community. In reflecting on the spatial implications different forms of community produce (and are in turn produced by), the article argues for greater appreciation of the imbrication of space, community, and energy as mutually co-constitutive. Neben Globalisierung und Digitalisierung haben Fragen der Meritokratie und (Aus-)Bildung einen festen Platz im öffentlichen, politischen und privaten Diskurs, denn wir leben in Europa zunehmend in Bildungsgesellschaften. Die Zeit, die wir in Bildungsorganisationen verbringen, wird immer länger, der absolvierte Fächerkanon wird immer breiter und die Bildungsabschlüsse, die wir erwerben, werden immer höher (vgl. Leemann et al. 2016). Zugleich steigen mit dem Übergang von der Industrie- zur modernen Dienstleistungsgesellschaft die Ansprüche an fachliche und soziale Kompetenzen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt (vgl. Mayer und Solga 2008). Mit dem Wandel der Wirtschaftsstrukturen hin zu wissensbasierten Tätigkeiten, der zunehmenden Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt, den demographischen Veränderungen und dem in diesem Zusammenhang befürchteten Fachkräftemangel stehen europäische Gesellschaften vor der Aufgabe ihre Bildungssysteme zu reformieren. Auf europäischer, nationaler wie auch regionaler und lokaler Ebenen versuchen Bildungspolitiker den Zugang zu Hochschul- und Berufsbildung und lebenslanges Lernen für immer mehr Mitglieder jeder Kohorte zu ermöglichen. Alle müssen sich mehr denn je um Bildungszertifikate bemühen, weil diese für erfolgreiche Berufskarrieren unabdingbar geworden sind. Zugleich gibt es in diesem Wettbewerb klare Gewinner und Verlierer, denn diejenigen ohne Zugang zu (Aus-)Bildung, vor allem ehemalige Sonderschüler und Hauptschüler, werden zunehmend marginalisiert (vgl. Pfahl 2011; Protsch 2014; Solga 2005). Bildung und die durch sie erworbenen und ausgewiesenen Fähigkeiten gelten in unserer Gesellschaft als Innovationspotenzial, als zentrale Voraussetzungen für wirtschaftlichen Erfolg, gesellschaftlichen Wohlstand sowie soziale und politische Teilhabe. Statt der sozialen Platzierung entlang zugeschriebener Merkmale der Herkunft (wie Schicht, Geschlecht, Rasse, Ethnie) soll die erworbene Leistung, signalisiert in Schulnoten, Bildungsabschlüssen, Qualifikationen sowie Bildungskarrieren insgesamt, den legitimen Zugang zu Positionen, insbesondere höheren sozialen Positionen bestimmen. Insofern ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass in europäischen Gesellschaften individuelle Bildungsbeteiligung und Bildungserfolg wesentliche Bestimmungsgrößen der Verteilung gesellschaftlicher Chancen und Risiken darstellen. The discrete Pompeiu problem is stemmed from an integral-geometric question on the plane. The problem is whether we can reconstruct a function if we know the average values of the function on every congruent copy of a given pattern. After introducing the theory of spectral analysis on discrete Abelian groups, I show some results for the discrete version of the problem. One of the arguments is connected to a coloring problem of the plane. One of them is a geometric construction and some others based on some geometric and combinatoric properties of the plane. I also mention some unsolved questions of the topic. My talk is based on a joint work with M. Laczkovich and Cs. Vincze. [less ▲]

Robert Triffin (1911-1993), a Belgian-born economist who spent much of his career in America, had a major influence on 20th-century economic thinking. He is particularly known for his monetary approach. His intellectual legacy revolves ariund the 'Triffin dilemma' or 'Triffin paradox'. Triffin accurately predicted the end of the Bretton Woods system, though not for the right reasons. Triffin stuck by his monetary theory that it was much harder to achieve sound international economic management with flexible exchange rates and that best practices were by no means a guarantee of global stability if they were not accompanied by genuine international coordination. Triffin was also a committed European. He was close to Jean Monnet and Pierre Werner and worked alongside them from the early 1960's onwards in favour of European monetary integration. [less ▲]

Flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) is one of the most challenging combinatorial optimization problems. FJSP is an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem where an operation can be processed by several different machines. The FJSP contains two sub-problems, namely machine assignment problem and operation sequencing problem. In this paper, we propose and compare a discrete firefly algorithm (FA) and a genetic algorithm (GA) for the multi-objective FJSP. Three minimization objectives are considered, the maximum completion time, workload of the critical machine and total workload of all machines. Five well-known instances of FJSP have been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. Comparisons among our methods and state-of-the-art algorithms are also provided. The experimental results demonstrate that the FA and GA have achieved improvements in terms of efficiency. Solutions obtained by both algorithms are comparable to those obtained by algorithms with local search. In addition, based on our initial experiments, results show that the proposed discrete firefly algorithm is feasible, more effective and efficient than our proposed genetic algorithm for solving multi-objective FJSP. The investigation and condition assessment of bridges have a very high priority in the construction industry today. Particularly, due to the fact that many bridge structures are getting old and partly reach the end of their useful life, the control and condition assessment of bridge structures have become very important and essential. The present research work introduces an efficient new method for condition assessment called the Deformation Area Difference (DAD) Method. This new method represents an attractive alternative to visual inspection and long-term monitoring. In this paper, the new method with its theoretical background is presented and explained by means of a laboratory experiment and some additional theoretical calculation examples. The experimental investigations have been realised on a reinforced concrete beam, which has been gradually loaded until failure. For each load step, the stiffness reduction and the apparent cracking have been monitored. High-precision measurements such as close-range photogrammetry, digital levelling and displacement sensors have been used for the determination of the deflection curve. The DAD method has been applied to identify the area of the crack pattern of the laboratory experiment. Furthermore, the method is discussed with regard to the load level and the precision of the deformation measurements. On the basis of the laboratory experiment, the applicability of the DAD method for damage detection could be proven. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the method with regard to the damage degree, the static system, the damage position and the impact of temperature variation were analysed. [less ▲]
