It is necessary to identify predictors of early reading, foundation of children’s school success. No study in Serbia has investigated this before. The purpose of our study was to identify predictors of early reading and explore correlates of preschool children in Serbia. Children (N=159) age 5-8 were assessed three times over 14 months by an adaptive test, Performance Indicators in Primary School (PIPS). Reading at Time 3 was predicted by gender and mathematics and not by vocabulary and phonological awareness from Time 1. Older children performed higher than younger in vocabulary, phonological awareness, reading and mathematics at Time 1 only. Girls scored higher than boys and Romani scored the lowest in reading at all times. This study offers important information on early reading of an under researched population. Attrition of the sample limits the findings. [less ▲]

After nearly thirty years of dormancy with respect to direct taxation matters, the EU fundamental freedoms have been gradually accepted as a major determinant of the Member States’ freedom to impose to taxes. Today, the power of the freedoms to limit the Member States’ competence in this area of law is accepted without question. At the same time, EU fundamental rights have, to date, played almost no role at all with respect to tax matters, let alone direct tax matters, although they were already recognized as constituent elements of primary EU law by the Court of Justice of the European Union (the Court or the CJEU) in the 1960s. This dichotomy is remarkable, not least because it is difficult to neatly disentangle fundamental freedoms from fundamental rights, as the former may well be seen as a subset of the latter. This contribution explores the doctrinal underpinnings of their existing similarities and differences as well as the interaction of both, in order to offer an explanation for the seemingly contradictory perception of both fundamental bases of primary EU law. In so doing, it will address the following questions: What is the relationship between fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms? To what extent do they limit or reinforce each other? Why has the CJEU not brought EU fundamental rights to bear in its jurisprudence on direct taxation thus far? Can or should the CJEU be more active in this respect? Thus, this contribution, first, briefly recounts the development of EU fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms and the doctrinal underpinnings of this development as a basis to analyse the scope of both components of primary law and their relationship to one another. Second, it analyses the similarities and relevant differences between fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms and suggests an answer to the question of the extent to which the fundamental freedoms can or should be considered to be fundamental rights. Finally, it assesses the application of fundamental rights in direct tax cases by looking at the clues the CJEU has left in the very little case law available with implications for this question. Within the world of wireless technologies, Bluetooth has recently been at the forefront of innovation. It is becoming increasingly relevant for vehicles to become aware of their surroundings. Therefore, having knowledge of nearby Bluetooth devices, both inside and outside other vehicles, can provide the listening vehicles with enough data to learn about their environment. In this paper, we collect and analyze a dataset of Bluetooth Classic (BC) and Low Energy (BLE) discoveries. We evaluate their respective characteristics and ability to provide context-aware information from a vehicular perspective. By taking a look at data about the encountered devices, such as GPS location, quantity, quality of signal and device class information, we infer distinctive behaviors between BC and BLE relative to context and application. For this purpose, we propose a set a features to train a classifier for the recognition of different driving environments (i.e. road classes) from Bluetooth discovery data alone. Comparing the performance of our classifier with different sampling parameters, the presented results indicate that, with our feature selection, we are able to predict with reasonable confidence up to three classes (Highway, City, Extra-Urban) by using only discovery data and no geographical information. This outcome gives promising results targeted at low energy and privacy-friendly applications and can open up a wide range of research directions. [less ▲]

Impacting particles or static aggregated particles at high temperature may undergo a permanent change of shape modifying the microstructure. Two particles in contact can develop some bonds within sub-second time. This fast sintering force in the particular case of the snow contribute to the rheological behavior and grain rearrangement [1]. Understanding the kinetics of sintering in granular material is of great importance in some engineering applications. For decades, diffusional processes have received more attention in investigations related to the mechanisms behind sintering [2]. Some works have suggested that the plastic flow might be neglected in sintering process for stresses are not high enough to cause dislocation. However, some studies have showed that stresses experienced in fine particles necks can be high enough and even lead to plasticity driven sintering. The importance of each mechanism in the sintering process may lie in the temporal and spatial scale of interest. Increasing importance is being accorded to the role of plastic flow in sintering. however, several investigations have proved that the conventional plasticity theory may fail to predict plastic activity at micro-scale, The objective of this work is to develop adequate computational model that includes instantaneous and time-dependent plastic flow at micro-scale. We aim at extending existing models of sintering and plasticity to cope with multiple spatial and temporal scales simulations using Extended Discrete Element Method. The numerical results are compare to experimental data on snow. [less ▲]

The benefits brought to composite construction by the use of semi-continuous joints are well recognised and confirmed by the significant amount of research which has been performed in this area. It has been analytically proven that at serviceability limit state (SLS) the performance of composite beams benefits from the use of semi-continuous composite joints [1]. At ultimate limit state (ULS) it is of common knowledge that the use of semi-continuous composite joints is only judicious in combination with the plastic hinge theory, which requires the verification of the rotation capacity of the joint. Despite all the effort done in this area, a concise and well-defined method to determine the rotation capacity of composite joints is lacking. Hence, a research programme with a large experimental part has been designed to investigate the behaviour of the connection between a column and a composite slim-floor beam subjected to a negative bending moment. It is the first time that the rotation capacity of an encased composite joint is analysed. The experimental campaign, presented in here, aims at determining the influence of each joint component on the rotation capacity of composite joints. Three test series have been performed; on boltless beam-to-column connections using variable longitudinal reinforcement ratio and bar diameter of the slab, on a bare bolted end-plate steel connection without reinforced concrete slab and finally on the encased composite joint with the complete bolted end-plate connection. This paper presents a detailed description of the tested specimen, shows the main results of the experimental investigations and gives an outlook on future work regarding this research project. The final goal of the research project is to develop a comprehensive methodology to predict the rotation capacity for traditional and slim-floor type of composite beams. [less ▲]

Structural health monitoring is tracking static or dynamic characteristics of a structure to identify and localize stiffness reductions for damage detection. Different damage indicators are used and any indicator presents advantages and drawbacks. Hence the idea comes up to combine them in a model-updating procedure using a finite element model. In a first step, a model is fit to match the healthy reference state of the examined structure. Therefore it relies on minimizing a special objective function adding and weighting the differences between measured and calculated static and dynamic structural characteristics. For doing structural health monitoring the measurements are repeated in distinct time intervals and the finite element model is updated again, using the same objective function and minimization procedure. Damage can be identified and localized by highlighting reductions in the stiffness matrix of the model compared to the initial model. The efficiency of the method is illustrated by in-situ tests, where a single beam is examined that was part of a real prestressed concrete bridge. For static tests, 8 displacement transducers were disposed along the length of 40m, while the beam was mass-loaded and the deflection line is analyzed. Modal analysis was performed with swept sine excitation with constant force amplitude to identify eigenfrequencies and mode shapes. Stepwise artificial damage was provoked by cutting multiple prestressed tendons inside the concrete beam. A finite element model with a mapped mesh was created, allowing a variation of Young’s modulus in grouped sections. On real bridges temperature is neither homogenous nor constant over time, which often has a considerable influence on measured static and dynamic characteristics as the stiffness of asphalt and/or bearings can be affected. The proposed methods show their efficiency when temperature effects were excluded or compensated after measurement, which is a topic on its own and not discussed here. [less ▲]

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays important roles in the regulation of liver functions and promotes the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver cancer. Whereas protein-encoding genes are well-studied, the contribution of IL-6-regulated microRNAs (miRNAs) to its effects is largely unexplored. Similarly, little is known about miRNAs regulating key molecules of the IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway. In the main part of this thesis, cell-based high-throughput screenings systems were developed, allowing the identification of miRNAs interfering with the IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling. Out of 538 miRNA mimics, this dual screening approach followed by various validation steps (luciferase-3’UTR-reporter assays, western blot and flow cytometry analyses) allowed us to identify twelve miRNAs targeting STAT3, JAK1, SOCS3, IL6R and/or gp130, ten of them had not yet been reported as regulators of this pathway before. In the second part of this work, microarray analyses revealed that primary hepatocytes are considerably more responsive to IL-6 stimulation regarding changes in their miRNomes than liver-derived cell lines. Despite their weaker response, one of the top regulated miRNA found in the primary hepatocytes, miR-146b-5p, could also be induced by IL-6-type cytokines (IL-6 and Oncostatin M) in cell lines. Its functional role(s) in hepatocytes are currently investigated. A larger, comparative study included additionally Interferon gamma and IL-27, cytokines with a STAT1-dominated response, and supplementary cell lines originating not only from the liver but also from other tissues. While all cytokines had profound effects on the mRNA transcriptomes, only very small to moderate changes were observed at the miRNome level, suggesting that the regulation mediated by cytokines mainly happens through the modulation of protein-coding genes rather than by fine-tuning via miRNAs. Additionally, we analyzed expression of a broad panel of cytokines in sera of 125 patients with liver diseases (steatosis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, HCC) by bead-based multiplex immunoassays. We observed that, for example, serum HGF, IL-6 and IL-8 levels increased in relation with the severeness of liver pathology while PDGF-BB and RANTES decreased. When investigating the impact of the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 variant I148M (PNPLA3 I148M), known to be a risk factor for the development of liver diseases, on the serum levels of cytokines, no significant differences could be observed between the different genotypes. In this PhD thesis, we identified and characterized miRNAs relevant for the IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway, including miR-146b-5p as an IL-6-inducible miRNA. Others like miR-194-5p, miR-4473 and miR-548k were demonstrated to be negative regulators of this pathway and may be of potential therapeutic significance. In addition, we showed that, while miRNAs can modulate this pathway, IL-6 seems to rather regulate the mRNA transcriptome than the miRNome. [less ▲]

Do we, educators, know this Z generation? Do we know what motivates them? The Z generation is a generation of digital natives interacting with PCs, iPads, smartphones and the internet since birth, a pragmatic and short term orientated generation. Our prejudice brands them as unprepared and unmotivated, with their 10 second attention spans, but in reality, they have already proven they are creative, determined and hardworking as well as team oriented, when they are given the opportunity.
