We say that a finite subset $E$ of the Euclidean plane $\R^2$ has the discrete Pompeiu property with respect to isometries (similarities), if, whenever $f:\R^2\to \C$ is such that the sum of the values of $f$ on any congruent (similar) copy of $E$ is zero, then $f$ is identically zero. We show that every parallelogram and every quadrangle with rational coordinates has the discrete Pompeiu property with respect to isometries. We also present a family of quadrangles depending on a continuous parameter having the same property. We investigate the weighted version of the discrete Pompeiu property as well, and show that every finite linear set with commensurable distances has the weighted discrete Pompeiu property with respect to isometries, and every finite set has the weighted discrete Pompeiu property with respect to similarities. In this book we explore how academic writing varies across languages in order to enrich concepts for teaching academic writing in multilingual environments. The contributions focus on teaching approaches, linguistic features and writing practices in multilingual contexts. It aims to discuss how these findings could be applied in order to develop multilingual approaches for teaching academic writing at the university. [less ▲]

We compute the equivariant K-homology of the classifying space for proper actions, for cocompact 3-dimensional hyperbolic reflection groups. This coincides with the topological K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra associated to the group, via the Baum-Connes conjecture. We show that, for any such reflection group, the associated K-theory groups are torsion-free. This means that we can complete previous computations with rational coefficients to get results with integral coefficients. On the way, we establish an efficient criterion for checking torsion-freeness of K-theory groups, which can be applied far beyond the scope of the present paper. [less ▲]

As an introductory article of a Special Issue on Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) in the Benelux region, this paper provides an overview of ESE research, policy and practice in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. It discusses the different contributions in this collection with regard to how the central theme of this issue, the relation between education and societal transformation, is approached in each paper. The main characteristics of the ESE research fields in the Benelux are described in general terms, and placed within the context of how ESE policy and practice are organised in these countries. Next, different conceptualisations of the relation between educational and political spaces reflected in the collection are discussed and the varied contributions to this issue are positioned in relation to three distinguished traditions of approaching the place of democracy in ESE. The authors conclude with commenting on how this relates to different approaches to the research-policy-practice interface. [less ▲]

This article is a report about compiling a corpus of Luxembourgish for investigation of word formation. First it gives an example for benefits of using a corpus with annotations in investigation of productivity of some select-ed word formation affixes of Luxembourgish. Then it describes how this can be achieved from a technical point of view. [less ▲]

RATIONALE: Cardiac arrest (CA) is a serious condition characterized by high mortality rates, even after initial successful resuscitation, mainly due to neurological damage. Whether brain-heart communication is associated with outcome after CA is unknown. Heartbeat-evoked brain potentials (HEPs) represent neurophysiological indicators of brain-heart communication. The aim of this study was to address the association between HEPs and survival after CA. METHODS: HEPs were calculated from resting EEG/ECG in 55 CA patients 24 hours after resuscitation. All patients were treated with targeted temperature management and a standardized sedation protocol during assessment. We investigated the association between HEP amplitude (180- 320 ms, 455-595 ms, 860-1000 ms) and 6-month survival. RESULTS: Twenty-five of 55 patients (45%) were still alive at 6-month follow-up. Survivors showed a higher HEP amplitude at frontopolar and frontal electrodes in the late HEP interval than non-survivors. This effect remained significant after controlling for between-group differences in terms of age, Fentanyl dose, and time lag between resuscitation and EEG assessment. There were no group differences in heart rate or heart rate variability. CONCLUSION: Brain-heart communication, as reflected by HEPs, is associated with survival after CA. Future studies should address the brain-heart axis in CA. [less ▲]

The distribution of matter in our universe is strikingly time asymmetric. Most famously, the Second Law of Thermodynamics says that entropy tends to increase toward the future but not toward the past. But what explains this time-asymmetric distribution of matter? In this paper, I explore the idea that time itself has a direction by drawing from recent work on grounding and metaphysical fundamentality. I will argue that positing such a direction of time, in addition to time-asymmetric boundary conditions (such as the so-called "past hypothesis"), enables a better explanation of the thermodynamic asymmetry than is available otherwise.
