Abstract :
[en] The assumption underlying the present study is that solving individually or collaboratively a non-routine problem influences the implementation of the strategies. In our experiment, 909 3rd graders from Luxembourg primary schools were randomly assigned to two different groups: an individual group and a collaborative group. In both groups students had to solve a non-routine problem in which several solving strategies can be admitted. The results showed that among the correct problem solving strategies, the formal strategy and the guess and check strategy were proportionally more implemented in the collaborative condition than in the individual condition. Implications of these results for educational purposes are discussed; suggestions for future research are made.
