This article presents the design and control of a two-link lightweight robotic arm using shape memory alloy wires as actuators. Both a single-wire actuated system and an antagonistic configuration system are tested in open and closed loops. The mathematical model of the shape memory alloy wire, as well as the kinematics and dynamics of the robotic arm, are presented. The operational space control of the robotic arm is performed using a joint space control in the inner loop and closed-loop inverse kinematics in the outer loop. In order to choose the best joint space control approach, a comparative study of four different control approaches (proportional derivative, sliding mode, adaptive, and adaptive sliding mode control) is carried out for the proposed model. From this comparative analysis, the adaptive controller was chosen to perform operational space control. This control helps us to perform accurate positioning of the end-effector of shape memory alloy wire–based robotic arm. The complete operational space control was successfully tested through simulation studies performing position reference tracking in the end-effector space. Through simulation studies, the proposed control solution is successfully verified to control the hysteretic robotic arm. [less ▲]

A meal-estimation algorithm is developed based on an extended mathematical model of the glucose-insulin system. The proposed model describes the dynamics of glucose levels in blood and in subcutaneous layer, as well as the meal intake which is considered an unknown input of the system. This model seeks to represent in a more realistic manner, the pancreas malfunction in patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Based on model, a non-linear high gain observer (NHGO) with a sliding mode is designed in order to estimate the unmeasured states and the external disturbances of the system. This scheme is useful to maintain frequent monitoring of glucose levels and any changes in its behaviour. The unknown input or disturbance is estimated through the sliding mode based only the estimation error. Data from a real patient is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed estimation scheme. [less ▲]

This paper presents a new approach to represent the glucose and insulin levels on patients with diabetes type 1 based on the well known minimal model. In this work it is proposed a new mathematical model that attempts modeling properly the exactly malfunction of this system. The model takes into account both: the description of the glucose level in the subcutaneous layer and a meal disturbance term. In this paper a new mathematical model of the glucose-insulin system is presented. The proposed model represents Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus patients and seeks to give a suitable model of the malfunction of the pancreas. Based on the classic minimal model, this new approach takes into account the description of the glucose dynamic in the subcutaneous layer and a meal disturbance term, together with an additional term that represents the insulin injections, which make this proposal a more realistic approach. In this work a Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) Fuzzy controller is applied to regulate the intake and exhaust manifold pressures in a four-cylinder diesel engine with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). The control strategy implements a feedback controller that generates commands to regulate the mass flow rates and to force two internal variables (pressures) to follow the reference. The PDC-Fuzzy controller is based on a structure of the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) Fuzzy descriptor model, which permits to represent adequately the nonlinear multivariable structure of the process taking into account the constraints on inputs and states. The proposed model is based on a transformation of scalar functions that circumvents the difficulties inherent in the nonlinearity. The PDC-Fuzzy controller is designed using new conditions on Linear Matrix Inequialities (LMI) constraints without invertibility of the Lyapunov matrix to guarantee a robust stability of the diesel engine. The performance of the tracking control strategy is tested in simulations on a four-cylinder diesel engine. [less ▲]

In this article a continuous-discrete high gain observer to estimate the molar compositions in a distillation column for ethanol-water mixture, using measurements of temperatures in the dishes is presented. One of the main advantages of this observer is its constant gain, so tune it depends only on the choice of constant parameters that must satisfy some simple algebraic inequalities. The continuous-discrete observer has a good track process dynamics despite using less data than an observer purely discrete. The effectiveness of the proposed method to estimate concentrations in a distillation column, and also their proper performance compared to the purely discrete version of the observer, are shown using experimental data. In this work the application of a full-order observer to a binary distillation column, using a strategy to simplify the nonlinear model is presented. Mainly for process system, it is feasible to use differential-algebraic equations for describing the dynamical behavior of the plant. A mathematical model is an extension of the traditional chemical and physical laws (such as the laws of conservation of mass, energy, momentum, etc.) to include the time-varying parameters which can be seen as singular systems. Then, the binary distillation column model is presented as a Linear Parameter Variant (LPV) singular system. Singular systems provide special features not found in traditional systems. In that sense, the proposed model maintains the dynamics and physical properties of the plant. The applied method guarantees the regularity and the convergence of the observer system. [less ▲]

In this paper we present a high-gain observer implemented in its discrete and continuous-discrete versions in order to compare the performance of both algorithms. The comparison is made considering the sampling time used to perform the observer’s correction stage in order to establish that the continuous-discrete observer is the best option when a low sampling time is used. Under this condition the continuous discrete observer can process data performing a reliable on-line estimation of the system (a slow dynamics of the process is required). We apply both algorithms to a distillation column that uses the Ethanol-Water binary mixture. [less ▲]
